Delivered Instructional Programming
Commemorating African-American Heritage

In February PeachStar will observe Black History Month with a wide variety of special programming.
PeachStar will present Great African Americans in Georgia, a series of short spots created by Georgia Public Television (GPTV) profiling five Georgians who beat humble odds and rose to prominence. The five are Ma Rainey, "Mother of the Blues;" Henry 0. Flipper, first African-American graduate of West Point; Beulah Rucker Oliver, accomplished educator; Carrie Steele, noted humanitarian; and Alonzo Herndon, who was born a slave and went on to become a millionaire and founder of Atlanta Life Insurance Company. The shorts will be run frequently between regularly scheduled programming throughout February on Channel410.
Africans in America, the highly acclaimed PBS series recently aired on GPTV, will be re-aired in four installments on Channel 430.
On 410 and 430 PeachStar will air a special blockfeed of Georgia Stories programs that focus on AfricanAmerican history, culture and the civil rights movement in Georgia.
Many of the above stories would have gone untold had it not been for black journalists and newspapers. In November 1997, the Emory University journalism program held a symposium called Struggling to Report and Reporting the Struggle: The African American Journalist in the South. Pioneers such as Xernona Clayton, the first African-American woman to host a television program in the South, share their stories and insights. Excerpts from the two-day symposium will air on 430.
Impact of the Olympic Movement's episode 109, "Race Relations," also will air on 430.
These new programs will be on 410 to enhance African-American studies: "Enslaved," a Colonial
Williamsburg live electronic field trip, depicts plantation life through an enslaved African's eyes.
Henry Flipper, first African American to graduate from The United States Military Academy, is featured in Great African Americans in Georgia.
Journey: The Black Astronaut profiles the first African-American astronaut Robert Lawrence Jr. and five who followed in his footsteps.
The Strange Demise ofJim Crow documents the end of that era.

The Georgia Staff Development Council's Satellite Academy
Timely Topics in Education - A Professional Development Series
PeachStar Education Services is collaborating with the Georgia Staff Development Council (GSDC) to bring Timely Topics in Education, a quality professional development series, to every educator in Georgia. The programming is video-based and satellite-delivered enabling educators to meet their recertification requirements without having to leave the work site. A sample staff development plan for one SDU and a facilitator's guide will be mailed upon receipt of registration. Sites may tape sessions and retain one copy for use at the downlink site until the end of the academic year.
The Timely Topics series is a three-part package. The entire series or individual topics may be purchased.
Topic 1 -- Preventing School Violence -- Crisis Management for Education Leaders Broadcast Dates: February 15, 16, 17, 18 (Mon.-Thurs.) 3:30-4:30 PM each session Fee: $100 (per downlink site)
School Violence is content presented at a recent conference sponsored by the Georgia Human Relations Commission. The four one-hour sessions include keynote speakers, panel discussions and workshop presentations on ways educators can prevent school violence or provide a coordinated response to emergency events.
Topic 2 -- Sexual Harassment -What is it? How to prevent it? Broadcast Dates: February 23, 24 (Tues. & Wed.) 3:30-4:30 PM each session Fee: $75 (per downlink site)
Sexual Harassment consists of content first presented as a live teleconference to teachers and administrators in the Fulton County School System. Fulton County has generously shared with GSDC an edited version of that program which is applicable to all school systems throughout Georgia. The two one-hour sessions define sexual harassment, use interesting vignettes as examples of inappropriate behavior, and demonstrate effective techniques for administrators confronted with a sexual harassment complaint. The focus is on conduct between adult employees.
Topic 3 -- Staff Development and Student Achievement -- Making the Connection in Georgia Schools Broadcast Date: February 25 (Thurs.) 3:30-4:30 PM Fee: $75 (per downlink site)
Staff Development is a report from the Council for School Performance which highlights effective practices that positively impact student achievement. The one-hour session will aid those interested in planning school-based staff development activities and will highlight "best practices."

lrasshai Registration Begins February 15th
Register by May 15 and receive one student enrollment FREE!
Registration for Irasshai, PeachStar's two-year college-prep sequence in Japanese language and culture, begins February 15, 1999. Schools taking advantage of "Early Bird Registration," by enrolling by May 15 for the 19992000 school year, will receive one free student enrollment in lrasshai. Georgia schools can enroll in either Japanese I or Japanese II at a reduced rate of $350 per student. The national rate is $500 per student.
In 1998 the prestigious National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA) selected Irasshai as the "Best K-12 Distance Learning Course
in the Nation."
Facilitators of lrasshai need no background in Japanese and are encouraged to learn the language along with their students at no additional charge. The courses are available to students nationwide via the PeachStar Satellite Network or by purchase of tapes. Students who enroll receive a student textbook, twiceweekly conversation practice by telephone with a native Japanese speaker, and access to a comprehensive web site offering a myriad of study opportunities.

Converting to the Semester System
PeachStar Education Services was pleased to assist the Board of Regents by producing and airing Converting to the Semester System, a recent statewide teleconference on the topic of Georgia postsecondary institutions converting from the quarter to the semester system. The program, broadcast live from Georgia Public Broadcasting studios, featured panel discussions and question and answer sessions among studio participants and viewers across the state.
There have been numerous requests from faculty, administrators and staff who would like copies of the teleconference. University System personnel interested in watching or taping the program should call PeachStar's Video on Request line to arrange a special rebroadcast. PeachStar and ICLE Provide
Continuing Education for Georgia Lawyers
It's efficient, popular and educational -- and it's legal. It's the second year of satellite-delivered continuing education credit hours for members of the Georgia Bar Association. Last year the Institute of Continuing Legal Education in Georgia (ICLE) began delivering continuing education seminars over PeachStar's Channel 430. The classes were broadcast live from Georgia Public Broadcasting's studios to 24 downlink sites throughout the state. More than 4500 (approximately 1 in 5) lawyers in Georgia attended the seminars -- without having to leave their communities and drive to Atlanta.
According to ICLE's Scott Coulter, last year's teleconferences were a great success, and this year ICLE has increased the number of downlink sites to 31. "Our goal," says Coulter, "is for any attorney in Georgia to be able to attend a seminar at a site within 30 minutes travel time from his or her home or office." Most of the sites used by ICLE are universities, adult technical schools and regional libraries.
Programs air live on Fridays and are replayed the next Thursday. Most are all-day seminars, and topics include "Killer Cross-Examination Techniques," "Ethics, Professionalism & Malpractice" and "Punitive Damages in Georgia."

During the first 10 months of 1998, the Satellite Help Desk responded to 8,709 telephone calls. While some calls (approximately 388) resulted in dispatching a technician to service equipment, most callers got answers to their technical questions over the phone. The following Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) are among those most recently asked and answered:
Q: How do I adjust the volume on my digicipher? A: To turn up the volume, push the right arrow button on the front of the digicipher. To turn the volume down, hit the left arrow button. (A volume bar will appear on the top of the screen.)
Q: How do I get rid of the blue bars on my screen that show the channel and time? A: Simply hit the "view" button on the front of the digicipher.
Q: Does my VCR need to be in line mode? A: With digital receivers, the VCR does not need to be in line mode to receive a signal. Your VCR does need to be on channel 3 or 4.
Q: What is polarity? A: Polarity refers to the way a satellite signal is sent. Polarity can be either vertical or horizontal. Such an arrangement reduces the chance of different satellite signals interfering with each other.
