MATHLINE: Meeting the Nation's Goals
In 1988, President George Bush and the governors of the 50 states met and established national education goals. One major goal was to make American students number one in the world in mathematics and science by the year 2000.
Since then, the Georgia Board of Education has established tougher graduation requirements for all students graduating from Georgia public high schools. Chief among those changes - every high school student must take algebra or an equivalent course.
Today, every student seeking admission to a school in Georgia's University System must have had at least four units of math in high school.
These reforms create a challenge for all Georgia students - and also for all Georgia educators who teach math. Fortunately, effective and innovative staff development is available from PeachStar Education Services.
PeachStar is proud to offer a state-of-the-art professional development program for mathematics teachers in Georgia. PBS MATHLINE, developed in collaboration with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), is public television's first offering of discipline-specific educational services using online technology. Teachers go online to discuss mathematics instruction with other math teachers from across the state and across the country. In this way, it's like having a group of mentors to assist the teacher each day in his or her classroom. And, the lessons used are flexible
enough to meet the educational needs of a wide variety of students.
MATHLINE teachers receive lesson plans which incorporate skills, activities and knowledge found in NCTM standards and are designed to help the nation reach its goals in mathematics education and achievement. Teachers also receive videotapes that show master teachers modeling effective approaches to teaching these lessons in their own classrooms. After viewing the tapes, implementing the lessons and modifying them for their own classroom, teachers go online and share ideas with other math professionals. Just like any commercial Internet service, teachers can go online at their own convenience to post messages, questions and comments regarding math and the teaching of math.
Online and On Demand
PBS MATHLINE offers teachers the opportunity and flexibility to take charge of their own professional development. Approximately 25-35 teachers make up each online learning community. A facilitator, an accomplished practicing teacher, leads discussions on issues and ideas developed in the video lessons, on other mathematical topics of common interest and on educational issues related to teaching, learning and assessment. Through online communications teachers have the opportunity to share experiences, pose questions and respond to ideas generated by the facilitator and other participants. Major issues crucial

to effective teaching are addressed in this ongoing dialogue. Teachers gain practical staff development without missing class time.
Elementary, Middle, and High School Math Projects
Whether you are an elementary, middle or high school mathematics teacher, PBS MATHLINE has a group for you. The Elementary School Math Project (ESMP) focuses on the unique needs of elementary school teachers. Emphasis is given on geometry and spatial relations, statistics and probability, number sense and numeration, patterns and relationships, fractions and decimals, and measurement. The videos show how - at the primary and intermediate levels - a mathematics strand grows in depth as children develop more sophisticated approaches to math.
Each video lesson in the Middle School Math Project (MSMP) offers teachers the opportunity to gain insight into the master teacher's expectations, analyses of, and reflection on the teaching-learning experience. Content includes statistics, number relationships, number systems and theory, computation and estimation, patterns and functions, probability, algebra, geometry and measurement.
New for Fall, 1997, the High School Math Project (HSMP) focuses on a specific math, topic: algebra. Similar to both tlJ.e ESMP and MSMP, the high school project offers high school math teachers the opportunity to gain feedback on different approaches to teaching algebra. Each video lesson in HSMP illustrates problem solving, reasoning, communication and making mathematical connections.
PeachStar Education Services is now accepting applications from elementary, middle, and high school teachers to participate in PBS MATHLINE for the 1997-98 school year.
Participant applications are available online at <http:l/www.gpb.org/pstar/mathline.htm>

The Science & Technology of Communication
A P R I L 2 0 - 2 6 , 1 9 9 7 National Science Foundation
Mark your calendars -National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) '97 will be April 20-26, 1997. This year, the NSTW theme will be "Webs, Wires, and Waves," and will focus on communications and communications technologies in recognition of their impact in shrinking the world and bringing people worldwide closer together.
There are two basic components to NSTW. The first is a series of special events at the national, state and local levels. These events range from family science nights to science and technology fairs to laboratory open houses. The second component is a body of hands-on teaching activities developed and distributed free-ofcharge to participating organizations. These materials are designed to teach children to observe real-world phenomena, analyze variables, draw conclusions and evaluate findings.
NSTW is an outreach program of the National Science Foundation (NSF), an agency of the federal government charged with promoting and advancing
scientific progress and understanding throughout the nation. First held in 1985, NSTW now involves millions of American students, teachers, parents, scientists and others in year-round national and local events.
Major funding for NSTW comes from NSF. Other support is provided by sponsors that contribute money or other resources such as staff expertise to NSTW activities.
Anyone interested in organizing a NSTW event, obtaining free teaching activities or simply learning more about National Science and Technology Week should contact NSTW at this address: National Science and Technology Week, National Science Foundation, 4201 Wilson Boulevard, Room 1245, Arlington, VA 22230. E-mail: nstw@nsf.gov. World Wide Web: <http://www.nsf.gov/od/lpa/nstw/start.htm>. Teaching activities can be downloaded directly from the NSTW web site.

Take Your Students on an Amazing
Life and Times
of the Humpback Whale
Whale-Watching Adventure
Don't miss the next KidScience satellite series for grades 4-6, Life and Times of the Humpback Whale. This multimedia project includes three live, interactive video programs; a site on the World Wide Web; and a print teacher's guide. Students can communicate with the on-camera teacher via fax or e-mail, and selected classrooms will be able to ask questions over the telephone during the live programs.
The programs air on Thursdays, 1:30 PM April3, 10 and 17.
Visit the humpback whales in the frigid Alaskan waters, where they spend the summer months feeding, and then follow them down to the warm waters of Hawaii, where they pass the winters socializing, mating, and raising their young. The series will
join researchers in both Alaska and Hawaii to observe and analyze the whales as they communicate through both body language and songs. Who "writes" these songs and how do the whales learn them? How does a whale with a diet of tiny fish and organisms, get enough to eat? The programs will include some live underwater images and interaction with the whales. The Internet will let students work with researchers as they analyze the songs and identify whales by tail flukes.
PeachStar has already paid and registered for school off-air record rights for your use of the programs through May 31, 1998.

Fall Reg"r:r,....,....,
lrasshai Begins
Nationally-recognized Distance Learning Instructor Tim Cook is the host of Irasshai, Peach Star Education Services' innovative new Japanese series.
Registration for Irasshai for the 1997- 1998 school year kicked off March 1. Schools interested in offering Irasshai, the Japanese language and culture distance learning course produced by Georgia Public Broadcasting, have until June 15 to register. Each course carries one Carnegie unit of high school credit. Irasshai gives high school students in Georgia and across the nation the opportunity to learn to speak, read and write Japanese. Both Japanese I, a oneyear course including 73 video lessons, and Japanese II, a courseyear series including 70 video lessons, will be offered in the Fall on PeachStar and over GPTV.
Irasshai incorporates solid instruction and the delightful sense of humor of nationally recognized language instructor Tim Cook with advanced production and computer technology to create an enjoyable approach to learning Japanese. Schools enrolled in Irasshai receive instruction in the following ways: Video lessons taped from broadcasts on the PeachStar Satellite Network or in packaged sets for schools without digital satellite capability. Audio Interaction sessions, twice weekly toll-free telephone practice conversations with a highly trained speaker of Japanese. Text book and print materials that support the broadcasts and provide study activities and homework for individuals, pairs and small groups. Multimedia. An electronic discussion group for students and another for facilitators that connects classes across the country. A vast Web site provides a valuable source of curriculum enrichment and interaction as well. View the site at <http://www.ceismc.gatech.edu/irasshai/>
Schools may request an Irusshui, Japanese I and II, registration kit

Carla B. Patterson,
Director of Extended Learning Floyd College
(Ms. Patterson's letter has been edited for length)
Thank you for your role in securing the rights for Floyd College's use of SCOLA programming this past year. Our students and the entire community of Rome and Floyd County have benefited greatly from the opportunities this service has provided. The College's foreign language faculty has used SCOLA programming to enrich classroom experiences, and Floyd College Television has been able to bring news from around the world into the homes of local citizens. During the Olympics, FCTV was also able to provide news from Latvia, Sweden and South Korea to athletes representing these countries and training in Rome.
Thank you again for your time and efforts with this project. I look forward to our future ventures.
Respectfully,
Carla B. Patterson Director of Extended Learning

A Message from
Werner Rogers
Executive Director Georgia Public Broadcasting
I want to personally thank all of the media specialists, technology coordinators and other educators across Georgia who were so patient, understanding and cooperative when AT&T's communications satellite TELSTAR 401 malfunctioned earlier this year, knocking the PeachStar Satellite Network off the air for two school days. Fortunately, we quickly found space on another satellite, SPACENET 4, and resumed transmitting PeachStar programming with minimal disruption of classroom services.
Throughout the brief loss of service the Georgia State Department of Education, GSAMS and Convergent Media Systems staff worked with GPB to keep schools informed and to guide them through the process of steering their satellite dishes to SPACENET 4 and finding PeachStar's new channel.
All of us should also be thankful for the foresight of Governor Miller and state legislators who invested in steerable dishes for Georgia schools. Steerable dishes enabled our schools to move to PeachStar's new satellite with relative ease by simply punching a few buttons. (Compare this to the challenge faced by South Carolina, which also had a transponder on 401. South Carolina's dishes are fixed, so they have to send technicians to each downlink site to physically point their dishes at their new satellite - a huge expense in time and money.) Having steerable dishes will prove their value this summer when PeachStar will move one final time to our new, permanent satellite home.
Again, thanks to all of you who responded so quickly to overcome the problems caused by the loss of TELSTAR 401. If you ever require assistance in the area of satellite distance learning, please call on GPB's Education Services Division.
Werner

1996-97 Videoconference Series
Issues and Solutions in Higher Education
VideocQnference #5
Accreditation on Trial: Who Needs It?
Airs April 24, 2:30- 4 PM On the PBS Transponder
The final videoconference of this series provided free of charge to all Georgia's public colleges, universities, and technical institutes will air on the PBS transponder. Satellites coordinates, the facilitator's guide and participant handouts will be mailed directly to campus contact persons from the Adult Learning Service (ALS).
Dr. James T. Rogers, the executive director of the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Coll, eges and Schools (SACS), is featured as a panelist. This should be especially interesting to Georgia institutions that are part of the 11-state region of SACS. Accompanying Dr. Rogers is Bill Long, executive director for training and employee development at Hughes Training, Inc. (HTI). His responsibility is to develop his organization into a worldclass learning organization.
Using a courtroom format, this videoconference will examine the changing - some say diminishing - value of accreditation and credentialing. The program will also highlight new ways to certify the worth of courses that are emerging in these times of technology-based instruction, distance education, and the fast-moving demands of business.
This should be an excellent topic for a faculty seminar and can be videotaped for use at convenient times for those unable to view the live broadcast.
