The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is launching hard-hitting ads for its 2014 "Tips From Former Smokers" campaign. The ads, which began last week, will run nationwide for nine weeks on television, radio, and billboards, online, and in theaters, magazines, and newspapers. In Georgia, the ads are running in the Southwest Health District, 8-2.
The launch of these ads comes as CDC is also releasing new data on how many U.S. adults use some form of tobacco.
The Tips national tobacco education campaign has helped hundreds of thousands of smokers quit since it began in 2012. This year Tips returns with new ad participants living with the devastating effects of smoking-related diseases.

Through a partnership between myON and Get Georgia Reading: Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, all educators, librarians, students, and parents in Georgia have free access to more than 5,000 enhanced digital books this summer. These digital books are the core content of myON's award-winning personalized literacy environment with embedded tools and metrics to support and track student reading growth.
During this free summer trial, all readers will share a single account that provides unlimited access to myON's digital books, without the personalization elements.
"In Georgia, nearly two-thirds of children are not reading proficiently by the end of third grade," said Arianne B. Weldon, MPH, director, Get Georgia Reading Campaign for Grade-Level Reading. "Up until third grade, children are learning to read. After third grade, children must be able to read to learn. Children who do not read proficiently by third grade are four-times more likely to drop out of high school than their counterparts. Research shows that continued learning over the summer months is a critical factor in reaching the third grade reading milestone. We are thankful to myON for providing this free resource statewide."
