Recent HPD staff activities
October 28-29 - Staff attended the This Place Matters: Preserving Augusta's African American Communities conference sponsored by Tabernacle Baptist Church and the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History.
October 29-30 - Staff presented research to the Georgia Planning Association's fall meeting in Savannah on the history of African American schools and HPD's efforts to work with local communities to adaptively reuse their historic school buildings.

Primer focuses on historic preservation strategies to identify, evaluate and protect historic properties and brings together information from various sources into one guiding document.
HPD Director Dr. Dave Crass said, "We want to empower communities to make their own decisions about their local historic buildings and sites. This manual is one more tool preservationists can use to spur economic development while retaining those characteristics that make their neighborhoods unique."
Financed in part by a Preserve America grant awarded to HPD by the National Park Service, the Primer includes information about:
q the survey and inventory of historic properties q the evaluation and treatment of historic properties q tools and strategies available to communities for local
preservation planning q preservation partners and programs q outreach activities q funding sources and tax incentives for historic properties q applicable preservation legislation
In addition, the Primer highlights specific preservation projects and resource types from all over Georgia. Information for the Primer was compiled by HPD staff, with contributions from preservationists across the state, and various local, regional and state organizations.
The Primer can be found on the Community Assistance page of the Historic Preservation Division's website.

The Georgia Welcome Center near Sylvania, Screven County opened in 1962 as the state's first tourist welcome center.

NPS Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program
The National Park Service is inviting national park units and offices, government agencies and private organizations to submit proposals for its Cultural Resources Diversity Internship

Program for summer 2012. The program provides opportunities to minorities in historic preservation and cultural resources management. The program costs are shared by the program and the intern sponsor. In FY 2011 the total cost for each summer intern was $12,220. The internships begin June 4, 2012 and are for a 10-week period. Project proposals are due by November 30, 2011. For additional information and to obtain the proposal form contact Paloma Bolasny at 202-354-2174.
