New Developments
Health care giant Kaiser Permanente recently announced plans to open a national member services contact center in Gwinnett County. The move will bring more than 800 jobs to metro Atlanta by 2020. The health care organization is investing $51 million to purchase and renovate an 185,000 square foot office complex on 18 acres in Duluth near I-85. The new Georgia facility will open in fall 2016 and will serve more than 10 million customers in eight states and the District of Columbia, including about 300,000 in Georgia. The non-profit health care provider already operates contact centers in California, Colorado, Hawaii and Maryland. Employees there answer 15 million phone calls and a million e-mails a year about insurance coverage, billing and other issues. The company is also preparing to open a previously announced new IT facility in Atlanta.
Valmiera Glass Group has announced plans to expand its factory in Laurens County. Valmiera, a European manufacturer of fiberglass products, plans on invest $90 million on the project through 2022 and hire 425 people. Valmiera melts down and spins glass into fibers to be sold on spools or fashioned into heat- and water-resistant coated fabrics that can be used in a variety of products for the aerospace, automotive, fossil fuel and construction industries. This is the second phase of development they started in Dublin in 2014.
Health care insurer Anthem has said it plans to add 450 employees at its BlueCross BlueShield of Georgia office complex in the Midland area of Columbus by the end of 2017. The company relocated from an aging office complex on Warm Springs Road and held a grand opening of its 235,000 square foot facility on Technology Parkway in Columbus in September 2015. The expansion represents a capital investment of more than $3 million in Muscogee County. After the 450 employees are added in Columbus, Anthem will have about 4,500 workers in Georgia. Indianapolis-based Anthem Inc. is the parent company of BlueCross BlueShield of Georgia. It was known as WellPoint prior to
Anthem. The Columbus office houses call centers and staff in claims processing, enrollment and billing, IT, utilization management and provider services.
The United Methodist Church plans on moving its mission agency, Global Ministries, headquarters to Atlanta from New York City by August 2016. This move will bring 150 jobs to Atlanta. Global Ministries supports 350 missionaries in 60 countries and sites international flights through Atlanta's airport; a lower cost of living for employees; and the ability to partner with organizations such as Emory University and the Carter Center as factors in the move. Global Ministries plans to share space with Grace United Methodist Church at property on Ponce De Leon Avenue in Atlanta.
Textron Specialized Vehicle Inc. is planning to expand its current headquarters in Augusta and create around 400 jobs over five years. The golf car company will acquire a manufacturing facility on more than 235 acres of land currently owned by Procter & Gamble, which includes more than 600,000 square feet of manufacturing and administrative space, located at the intersection of Mike Padgett Highway and Marvin Griffin Road in south Augusta. The company designs and manufactures more than 90 consumer and commercial vehicle models, ranging from golf cars to side-by-sides to ground support equipment for the aviation industry.
Technology company Pindrop Security plans to add up to 100 jobs in Atlanta to promote its anti-fraud technology. Pindrop currently is housed in Midtown's Tech Square and according to the company, nearly 30 percent of all identity theft begins with a phone call. Pindrop has developed phone fraud-busting technology. The technology was developed at the Georgia Tech Information Security Center. Pindrop's security software identifies the type of device on which a call is made and the country of origin using the call's acoustic fingerprint.
