GEORGIA SEA TURTLE CENTER

5

COMINGINFROMTHECOLDBy Betsy Coy
A wintry day in February on Jekyll Island is a day for recovery and healing for cold-stunned sea

turtles at Jekyll Island Authority's Georgia Sea Turtle Center.

Ectothermic (cold-blooded creatures that take on the temperature of their surroundings) sea turtles depend on external heat for their bodies to function so they migrate to warmer o shore waters during winter. However, some sea turtles are caught in sudden drops of water temperature. Center Director and Veterinarian, Dr. Terry Norton explains, " e temperature of the water is the temperature of the turtle. If the water temperature drops below 50 they will start having problems. e turtles basically shut down because they don't have that heat to run their bodily functions."
Rescued sea turtles receive antibiotics, uids and a healthy diet to ght infection, dehydration and malnutrition respectively. eir body temperatures are raised gradually

by increasing the temperature of the tank water no more than ve degrees daily until it reaches the healthy 70 degree range.
Treating cold-stunned turtles is a collaborative e ort; the Georgia Sea Turtle Center works with the New England Aquarium and Aquariums in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.
e Center received 10 cold-stunned Kemp's Ridley turtles, the smallest and most endangered of all seven turtle

species, 6 green sea turtles, and 3 loggerheads by December. Most cold-stunned turtles will need the next few months to recover and then be released in spring's

warmer waters. Until then, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center uses wading pools and divided tanks to house their large number of patients.

' more information
Visitors can learn more about the sea turtle patients during the 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. programs included in the cost of general admission. Behind the Scenes Tours, at an additional fee, begin at 3 p.m. The Georgia Sea Turtle Center is open Tuesday Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is closed on Mondays during the month of February. WANDERER MEMORIALBy Andrea Marroquin
Mario Schambon: Interview with the Artist of the Wanderer Memorial established by the Jekyll
Island Museum to honor survivors of the last known slave ship to reach Georgia.

The Wanderer illegally landed on Jekyll Island over 150 years ago. The survivors were among the last known groups of enslaved Africans sold into captivity in America. Artist Mario Schambon, an Atlanta-based artist who enjoys collaborating with others to create art through sculpture, dance, and music, discussed the creation of the memorial that is located at the south end of Jekyll Island in the St. Andrews Picnic Area.

Marroquin: What made you excited about getting
involved in this project?
Schambon: The history of it. Because I am Columbian, I identify mostly with the coast of Columbia where my family is from, which was a slave port for the western half of South America. So it was a pretty interesting piece of history to be involved with -- a pleasure yacht turned slave ship. That's it, just telling that story.
Marroquin: What was your vision for the memorial?
Schambon: The aesthetics and the story-weaving part of it to look like a net. Look at the enslavement process as a net cast over people by other people who are more powerful, craftier, or just more evil. You cast a net over a man, and you catch him. And then what happens to him? So the sails are obviously the boat going over to Africa and coming back this way. There is the movement of the wind. Then the actual lines themselves represent the journey. In African history, the slave trade was a cross-continental thing, and with Europeans involved it became a trans-global thing. More than anything it was a journey about the people

and their ensnarement. Having three sails is also pretty traditional to African lore. There's the big one, which is the mama, the middle one which is the daddy, and then the little one which would be the baby. So there's the whole "family unit." The triangles are a symbol of change.
Marroquin: What about the sign panels?
Schambon: I wasn't one hundred percent sold on having sign panels out here, but I know it is important to be able to tell the story and have a piece of art. And, I think, looking at it, it's pretty successful. It involved some careful planning, because if these signs are pointed in the wrong way, you totally obscure the piece, and you also obscure the panels. We had to play with that.
Marroquin: Are you satisfied with your work on
the Wanderer Memorial?
Schambon: Maybe a year from now, I'll come back and go, "What was I thinking? This is all wrong!" But for right now, I feel pretty good about it. It feels like it's right.

TAKECONTROLOF YOURGOLFSWING
By Harry Kicklighter, PGA Director of Golf - Jekyll Island Golf Club
When playing golf you have to remember hitting the ball "as hard as you can" is not a good thing......
If you hit a 7-iron from 150 yards (example) you need to be sure you DO NOT try to hit it as hard or as far as you can. At the top of your backswing you need to be in a balanced and controlled position with whatever club you are hitting. If you swing too hard from this point, it will add backspin and that will cause the golf ball to balloon into the wind. Be sure to maintain a lower ball flight, by taking a longer club, choke down on the grip and swing easier. This will help you control both distance and your ball flight.

Beach & bike trails
Jekyll Island has over 20 plus miles of scenic, paved bicycle paths that wind through marshes, along the beach, under moss-draped oaks, and through the Historic District. The Island also offers approximately 10 miles of beach with natural dunes and sea oats. Although the views are often breathtaking, these remote areas can pose a safety issue. We ask our guests to remember that should they have an emergency, response time may be delayed while attempts are made to locate them. While enjoying Jekyll Island and all it offers, please adhere to the following safety advisory: Designate one person in the party to maintain a charged cell phone at all times. Keep in mind when calling 911 that Jekyll Island is a barrier Island and sometimes the 911 lines will reach Glynn County 911 or Camden County 911. If this happens, advise the operator that you are on Jekyll Island and they will transfer you to Jekyll/Georgia State Patrol 911. Pay close attention to where you are on the bike trail map while enjoying the 20 plus miles of trails. This will become vital in case of an emergency. Pay close attention to landmarks. If you are able to give a landmark, finding your location will be much easier for the emergency, medical response team. Beachgoers - pay close attention to the beach access numbers that are located on either end of Jekyll's crossovers. If an emergency occurs, the caller will be asked which beach access they used and whether they are North or South of that beach access. Do not feed or get to close to our abundant wildlife population.
We hope you enjoy Jekyll Island and ask that everyone use safe practices.
