e price of an admission gives access to the center during the whole day's business hours. You can go play in Great Dunes Park and then come into the air-conditioned Exhibit Hall and enjoy a cooler kind of entertainment.
Every day in August, visitors enjoy interactive educational activities about the ve species of Georgia sea turtles. In addition the center has a box turtle display and conservation projects for the diamondback terrapin. Younger visitors are sure to love Saturday's 10:30 a.m. "Turtle Tales" (a book reading and cra ) and Scute's Ocean Adventure (a puppet show) at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
In the adjacent open-air Pavillion visitors see recovering sea turtles that receive state-of-the-art veterinarian care. Georgia Sea Turtle personnel explain more at the 10 a.m. patient feeding and the 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. patient updates.
e regular admission includes watching videos of veterinarian procedures as well as
looking through the viewing window at the clinical procedures being done that day.
For an additional charge, the Behind e Scenes tour gives a closer look from the other side of the viewing window at 1 p.m. on ursday, Friday and Saturday. Advance reservations are required and usually sell out days in advance as the groups are limited to ten in size.

ere are a few guidelines for being "hatchling friendly": If you see a nest hatching, please remain
at least 20 feet away from it. Never pick up a hatchling and/or "help

If you do nd a disoriented hatchling (one that has gone into the dunes or street or is washing back onto shore and too weak to ght the surf), please call the Georgia Sea Turtle Center at 912-635-444. Include your exact location using distinctive landmarks.
One rescued hatchling, Amy, has grown into an adorable two year old who lives in an exhibit tank at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. Turtle patrollers found Amy when they excavated a nest. Her front ippers seemed paralyzed and remained tucked
Other turtles recover at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center and may be ed with a satellite transmi er and released. ey will send a signal every time they come up for a breath of air and researchers learn more about sea turtles in the wild from following them. One successfully released turtle, Du y, was the subject of a recent story in U.S. Kids Jack and Jill's July/August 2010 issue.
e Georgia Sea Turtle Center's programs of rehabilitation, research and education have done much to advance sea turtle conservation in the last three years since it opened. It has developed a national and international reputation.

Tides are a wave caused by the gravitational a raction between the earth, the moon and to a lesser extent the sun. Tidal bulges form as the gravitational a raction of the moon pulls the earth's water toward it. e earth's rotation results in centrifugal force that creates another bulge on the opposite side of the earth. e area under the bulge as it moves across the earth is high tide. While the area that lies outside the bulge is low tide. High tide is about 50 minutes later each day because in the 24 hours it takes for the earth to rotate, the moon has moved about 12 degrees in its orbit. e moon
is orbiting in the same direction as the earth is rotating thus there is a 50 minute lag time.
e earth's entire surface responds to the pull of the moon and sun. e tides are heavily in uenced by land mass. Tides forced into bays may reach 50 feet as in the Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia or be unnoticed in the Mediterranean where the tide fails to enter the Straight of Gibraltar. Here on Jekyll Island, due to the Georgia Bight, the curved shape of land along our coast, we experience a greater tide range than other areas along the east coast, about 6-8 feet.
Keep in mind we are talking about a vertical distance rather the horizontal distance you see when walking along the beach between low and high tide. In the open ocean the tide is about 3 to 4 feet depending on the phase of the moon.
When referring to the tides, we use a few terms that help to describe the tides that we see: Spring tide: Extra high and low tides that occur twice in the moon's 29 day orbit when the sun, moon and earth are in a straight line. is occurs during the new and full moon.
Neap tide: Lower than average high tide and low tide when the moon is at a right angle to the earth. is occurs during the rst and third quarter moon.
Semi-diurnal tides: Two high and two low tides of similar magnitude which occur slightly more than 6 hours apart. Most of the east coast, including Jekyll Island, experiences semi-diurnal tides.
Tidal Range: is is the vertical di erence between low and high tide. Georgia's average tidal range is 7 feet, but spring tides may reach 10 feet.

STORIES OF WANDERER SURVIVORS By Andrea Marroquin
The Wanderer illegally landed on Jekyll Island, Georgia in 1858, with the last known group of enslaved Africans sold into captivity in America. What became of the slave ship's captives?
The Wanderer's survivors were scattered across Georgia and throughout the South, to Florida, South Carolina, Louisiana, and Texas. Evidence continues to bring their stories to light, with more currently known about those in Georgia and South Carolina. The known survivors who remained in Georgia included Clementine Dubignon, Thomas Floyd, Tammany Hopkins, and Mrs. Alec Massie.
Clementine Dubignon was the youngest of the enslaved Africans to survive the crossing. She was born aboard the Wanderer during the frightful voyage. Although John and Henry Dubignon were eventually acquitted
for their part in the illegal slave trade, Clementine Dubignon's very name was evidence of the family's involvement. Following the Jekyll Island landing, she and her mother were carried inland. "When she was nearly grown, she `drifted' into Brunswick" to be reunited with her brother, Tom Floyd. Following the Civil War, she worked for several families in Glynn County including Theodore Flanders, a Brunswick carpenter with a wife and baby. Clementine was sometimes called "Steamboat" for the rolling hitch in her walk. Although she remained single, she was also called "Mom Clem" by the community, where she was a devoted churchgoer.

Clementine's big brother, Thomas Floyd, was about 17 years old when he was brought to America aboard the Wanderer. Several months after the landing, he was sold and separated from his mother, baby sister, and brother "Slaughtuh." Captain Henry Floyd purchased Tom and took him to Camden County, Georgia. Early in 1860, Tom married Silva Floyd. They had four children, Lucinda, Andrew, William, and Neptune. Captain Floyd relocated to Brunswick, bringing Tom and his family along. Sometime after 1870, however, Silva "went to the Yankees" while Tom chose to remain in the South. He was remarried to Charity Floyd. They had three children, Nora, Lincoln, and Caesar Prince, and Charity's two daughters by a previous marriage, Jennie and Charlotte Slaten. Tom became known locally as a healer. He purchased land on St. Simon's Island where the home he built for his family still stands today.
Tammany Hopkins was purchased by Dr. Thomas Spalding Hopkins from Sapelo Island. He later became a plantation owner and mayor of Thomasville, GA. Judge Henry William Hopkins, the son of the family, remembered that "Old Tammany, the African" had "built himself a hut apart" from the rest of the slave quarters, and said that children were afraid of him.
Author Leslie Stainton with the University of Michigan, researching a book, recently discovered the stories of two Wanderer survivors. One man was described as a "King or Prince" purchased by Francis Muir Scarlett on Jekyll Island and taken to work on the nearby Scarlett plantation. After freedom came, the African lived to old age overseeing the farming of a few acres of land a few miles from the Scarlett plantation.
"The Wanderer," a painting by Warren Sheppard in the Jekyll Island Museum collection.
Stainton also discovered information identifying Mrs. Alec Massie of St. Simons Island as a Wanderer survivor. The caption on a photograph of Alec Massie read: "His wife was one of the African women brought over on the Wanderer she never learned to speak English. He is half African." The couple founded a large family. Their children included, Fred, Emma, Sophia, Butler, Cathrine, and Oscar Massie.
In 2008, a Wanderer Memorial was established on the South End of Jekyll Island, at the St. Andrew's Picnic Area, dedicated to the survivors of the Wanderer. The Jekyll Island Museum continues to actively research what became of the Wanderer survivors.

YOU can help save the loggerhead sea turtle! Leaving the nest, hatchlings head toward the ocean following the brightest horizon, usually over the sea. Any artificial light will misguide them, leading them away from the ocean and leaving them vulnerable to predators, dehydration and exhaustion. Artificial light may also deter female sea turtles from nesting. At night do not bring flashlights or cameras with a flash to the beach and turn off all outdoor lighting.
The Georgia Sea Turtle Center is an operating department of the Jekyll Island Authority that is
dedicated to conservation through sea turtle rehabilitation, research and education programs.

Beach & bike trails
Jekyll Island has over 20 plus miles of scenic, paved bicycle paths that wind through marshes, along the beach, under moss-draped oaks, and through the Historic District. The Island also offers approximately 10 miles of beach with natural dunes and sea oats. Although the views are often breathtaking, these remote areas can pose a safety issue. We ask our guests to remember that should they have an emergency, response time may be delayed while attempts are made to locate them. While enjoying Jekyll Island and all it offers, please adhere to the following safety advisory: Designate one person in the party to maintain a charged cell phone at all times. Keep in mind when calling 911 that Jekyll Island is a barrier Island and sometimes the 911 lines will reach Glynn County 911 or Camden County 911. If this happens, advise the operator that you are on Jekyll Island and they will transfer you to Jekyll/ Georgia State Patrol 911. Pay close attention to where you are on the bike trail map while enjoying the 20 plus miles of trails. This will become vital in case of an emergency. Pay close attention to landmarks. If you are able to give a landmark, finding your location will be much easier for the emergency, medical response team Beachgoers pay close attention to the beach access numbers that are located on either end of Jekyll's crossovers. If an emergency occurs, the caller will be asked which beach access they used and whether they are North or South of that beach access. Do not feed or get to close to our abundant wildlife population.
We hope you enjoy Jekyll Island and ask that everyone use safe practices.
