Turtle Crawl Triathlon & Nest Fest fun for everyone!

Registration is now open for one of Jekyll Island's most-popular traditions, the annual Turtle Crawl Triathlon and NestFest celebrating athleticism and ecology on this beautiful barrier island. It's the perfect time to start planning your family's "racecation" on Jekyll Island!

The Turtle Crawl Triathlon races begin at the crack of dawn Saturday, May 17, 2014, at Great Dunes Park, located just north of the Jekyll Island Convention Center, along the island's picturesque beachfront.

Known for featuring one of the most-scenic triathlons on the East Coast, the Turtle Crawl Triathlon on Jekyll Island is sanctioned by USA Triathlon and offers a challenge for every skill level from worldclass athletes to novices among its three race events.

At the top end is the International Distance Triathlon, the competition for the most-elite athletes, consisting of a 1,500-meter swim, 29-mile bike ride and 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) run. Next is the Sprint Distance Triathlon, another stern test for endurance athletes that covers roughly half the lengths of the International Distance Triathlon: a 600-meter swim, 14.5-mile bike ride and 5K (3.1-mile) run.

For everyday runners and beginners, the Turtle Crawl also includes a 5K race along the magnificent Jekyll Island shoreline. Turtle Crawl Triathlon Registration Deadline: May 9. Athletes are encouraged to register early for the Turtle Crawl, a flourishing event in coastal Georgia's Golden Isles community. Online registration ends at

midnight May 9, 2014, and there will be no race-day registration for the International Distance Triathlon and Sprint Distance Triathlon. For the 5K Run, registration will close when 500 participants are signed up.

Sunshine, sandy beaches, salty marshes, sea turtles, and Jekyll Island... what do these all have in common? They are all part of the fun experience awaiting junior scientists, and young sea turtle enthusiasts will have at Sea Turtle Camp!
The Georgia Sea Turtle Center hosts its annual day camp for children ages 6-12 during June and July filled with hands on activities, field adventures, and of course sea turtles!
Aspiring marine biologists and conservationists spend 25 hours over 5 days learning about sea turtles and the natural diversity of Jekyll Island.
Each day is themed around different aspects of turtle biology, threats, conservation and what kids can do to make a difference. In addition, we explore

the diverse habitats of Jekyll Island from the beach to the tidal marshlands, freshwater ponds to the inland maritime forest to learn about the unique turtle species (not just sea turtles) found in Georgia.
Don't worry; campers still visit the sea turtle patients every day! Sea Turtle Campers come from near and far. Some are from right here in the Golden Isles while other travel from as far away as Maine and even Canada to experience 5 days of memorable conservation learning. Many families even plan their

summer vacations so that their children can attend camp. Since the first Sea Turtle Camp in 2008, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center has offered 27 weeks of summer learning engaging 483 children in hands-on conservation with many returning for consecutive years. This year is no different... with 7 weeks of camp scheduled, the GSTC continues its mission of increasing awareness of ecosystem health and educating youth to act and live responsibly in order to protect the environment.
This year all camp reservations are completed online for all weeks. Georgia Sea Turtle Center Members are eligible to register at a discounted rate. Camp runs from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm Monday-Friday. More details can be found at gstc.jekyllisland.com, click on the "Summer Camp" to reserve your spot!

National Historic Preservation Month has opportunities

This May, for Historic Preservation Month, the Jekyll Island Museum offers two opportunities that take a special sneak peek into ongoing efforts to save the island's unique past.
For over five gilded decades, the Jekyll Island Club created a fashionable resort on Jekyll Island catering to America's high society. Celebrated guests, such as the Rockefellers, Goodyears, Goulds, and Pulitzers, created a thriving cottage colony on Jekyll Island and a rich legacy for our nation.
For another half a century, the Jekyll Island Museum has worked to preserve that legacy, in the stories and historic structures of the Jekyll Island Club National Historic Landmark District.
Maintaining 34 historic structures is a considerable challenge. The historic district is one of the largest

ongoing restoration projects in the southeastern United States. But each restored structure is a success story. And each structure has its own tales to tell about the influential members of the glittering gilded era retreat. During Historic Preservation Month, the museum offers two opportunities to discover some of the island's preservation projects firsthand.
On Fridays, March-December 2014, at 2:00 pm, the Jekyll Island Museum offers "Our Legacy Preserved," a 2-hour expedition that explores the continuing progress to preserve the historic district as a whole. An interpreter will escort small groups throughout the historic district and inside several cottages of the Jekyll Island Club for an intimate look at ongoing efforts to preserve the stories of these men and women who shaped America. $35 Adults, $15 Children 7-15, Free under 6.

On Saturdays, May 3-31, 2014, at 10:00 am and 2:00 pm, special tours of "Hollybourne" showcase the beauty of the only Jekyll Cottage that is yet to be fully restored. Learn about the family that considered this island residence home, the unique design of the cottage, and the ongoing efforts

to save the building. $10 Adults, $8 Children 7-15, Free under 6. Tours depart from the Jekyll Island Museum on Stable Road. Reserve early!

Staying Safe: To ensure the safety and enjoyment of all who visit Jekyll Island, please adhere to the following measures.
Should 911 be required, please inform the dispatcher that you are on Jekyll Island. Barrier Island signals tend to drift and 911 calls may be answered in Glynn or Camden counties.
In case of an emergency, location is vital to emergency responders. Take note of your surroundings and location. Beach crossovers are numbered for your safety.
Use caution on sandbars, they can be covered by 10' of water at high tide.
Golf carts must have but are not limited to having: braking system, reflectors, horn, review mirror, seatbelts and hand holds for each passenger.

Bikes should be ridden on the bike paths. Bike helmets are required for riders age 16 & younger. No golf carts on bike paths. No vehicles on the beach. ATV's are not allowed anywhere Georgia State Law. No fires on the beach. No glass containers on the beach. Stay off Dunes. Only take home empty shells and dead sand dollars. Pets must be under immediate control of their owners and on a leash no longer than 16' at all times.

No pets allowed on South Beach between South Dunes Picnic Area and 2000' Northeast of St. Andrews Sound Picnic Area. Stay away from marked turtle nests. Fill in sand castles and holes on the beach. Pet owners are to remove and dispose pet fecal material. Feeding of any wild animals is prohibited. No fishing in fresh water lakes. Metal or mineral detection devices are prohibited. No fireworks. Mark your calendar! May 8th the Georgia Sea Turtle Center presents a twist in the highly popular "The Wild Side" lecture series. Hear from archaeologist David Thomas of the American Museum of Natural History as he talks about the archaeological discovery of a Spanish mission that occurred on St. Catherines Island in the 1500s. Lecture is from 6:30-8:30 at the Jekyll Island Convention Center. Ticket prices will be $10 and $5 for students.

Opening May 3 for weekend play, then open daily after May 14, Summer Waves is set to bring thrill-seekers nine amazingly wild rides with options for all ages.
First, catch a wave in the Frantic Atlantic Wave Pool, which goes from 2 to 4 feet deep and features more than 500,000 gallons of churning water. Across the park, you'll need to hold on tight to that inner-tube as you plunge through Pirate's Passage, an exhilarating slide dropping down a 300-foot, five-story tower.

Nature's Revenge couples thrilling elements: Thunder and The Hurricane. These two 40-foot slides take riders on a twisting and turning, 360-degree journey, sending them on a spiraling dunk into the 300-foot catch pool.
Next it's the Force Three, which is just that: a ride of three fun yet forceful slides. Flash Flood features a double inner tube slide spiraling down a 350-foot-long, 7-foot wide curvy slide; and Thunder and Lightning are twin slides that send you spiraling down 150-feet in fullyenclosed flumes. These rides triple the splash for the whole family!
Cool off with a refreshing soak in the Splash Zone. Get dunked by our giant bucket, or enjoy kid-friendly water guns.

Not up for a twisting, zipping, dunking ride? Spend some time in the calm, refreshing Turtle Creek.
For the smaller swimmers, try out the Kiddie Zone. Designed for children not tall enough for the bigger attractions, this park staple features two kiddie slides, waterfalls, and plenty of shade.

Lots of fellow dog lovers/owners with their pets of every size, shape and color, all passing each other with a smile or a hello. Even the dogs, mostly off leashes, look like they are smiling and oh so happy to be on that beautiful coastline. Saw a couple of dads with kids getting ready to fish in the surf hoping to catch a "giant one" as I heard one of the little boys say.

Daily, Jekyll Island Facebook fans share with us images they have captured while exploring the island. From breathtaking sunsets and our moss-draped oak canopies, to couples starting new lives together with a wedding on Driftwood Beach, our photos galleries are filled with blissful images from our friends.

Crabs scurry away from our feet hoping they won't get stepped on or picked up by seagulls for an easy and tasty breakfast. Paddle boarders heading out past the surf to enjoy the calm water, before the hot sun brings them back to shore.
As I walk, I can imagine, for just a little while, a peaceful world without the sadness, hate and evil we hear about almost on a daily basis now. Takes it all away. Gosh, I love this magical island!!
