Play with Course IQ
Most of us do not swing like a tour player, but there is one thing that we can all do the same as every player on tour. Most golfers have heard the term "Course Management", but don't know what it means? Course management refers to the way a golfer makes his/her way around the course in a smart, thought out manner. There are several aspects that we must consider in order to do this successfully. They include understanding course layout, club selection and decision making. The first thing I want a student to look at from the tee is which side of the hole has more trouble. Obviously, there are some holes that are very tough and have trouble on both sides, but typically one side will be more troublesome than the other. Whichever side you decide has the most trouble, go to that side of the tee box to tee it up. This allows you to have a better view of the safe side of the hole you are trying to hit to. This thought process should be similar for every shot, whether it is a lay-up or an approach shot into the green. On an
approach, if the flagstick is tucked on the left side of the green, the incorrect place to miss is to the left of the green. So you should aim towards the middle of the green, or away from the trouble. If you can avoid short-siding yourself on every green, you will have a much better opportunity to make par and avoid the big numbers.
Another important aspect of course management is club selection. Most players have a good idea of how far they hit each club. That distance is when we make solid contact, unfortunately we only hit shots well a small percentage of the time. My suggestion is to take an extra club on every shot that you hit throughout the round. Not only will you swing more smoothly, because you know it is plenty of club, you will also avoid the common miss of coming up short. If you happen to hit it well, more than likely you will find yourself on the back of the green and not in too much trouble.
Making smart choices throughout the round is the final obstacle that we must overcome. We all think that we
can hit that miracle shot out of the trees from 200 yards. The smart play is to pitch out to your favorite yardage and try to make par the hard way and avoid making a big number. During your next round, make a point to simply put your ball back in play and don't try to be a hero!
We all hit bad shots during the course of a round; the question is how we choose to let them affect our game. Having a short memory and not getting upset when we make a poor swing are crucial in golf. Bad
swings happen to all of us, bad decisions don't have to! So be smart and think your way around the course, it will lead to better scores and more fun! Please see your local PGA Professional for all of your course management and golf swing needs.

Summer Waves
cool
times
Be close to where all the action is!
Asplish. A splash. A smile! That's what guests will find this season at Summer Waves on Jekyll Island! As the biggest and coolest water park in the Golden Isles, Summer Waves offers fun-seekers 11 acres of water-filled family fun. Now open for daily play all summer long, Summer Waves features nine thrilling rides to provide a great day for the whole family.
First, catch a wave in the Frantic Atlantic Wave Pool, which goes from 2 to 4 feet deep and features more than 500,000 gallons of churning water. Across the park, you'll need to hold on tight to that inner-tube as you plunge through Pirate's Passage, an exhilarating slide dropping down a 300-foot, five-story tower.
Nature's Revenge couples its thrilling elements, with two 40-foot slides that take riders on a twisting and turning, 360-degree journey, sending them on a spiraling dunk into the 300-foot catch pool.
Next it's the Force Three: a ride of three fun yet forceful slides. Flash Flood features a double inner tube slide spiraling down a 350-foot-long, 7-foot wide curvy slide; and Thunder and Lightning are twin slides that send you spiraling down 150-feet in fully-enclosed flumes. These rides triple the splash for triple the thrill!
Cool off from the Georgia heat with a refreshing soak in the Splash Zone. Get dunked by our giant bucket, or enjoy kid-friendly water guns. Be sure to spend time in the calm, refreshing Turtle Creek. This
slow-paced portion of the park offers inner-tubes that only go 3 miles per hour in a lazy river loop around the park. For the smaller swimmers, try out the Kiddie Zone. Designed for children not tall enough for the bigger attractions, this park staple features two kiddie slides, waterfalls, and plenty of shade.
New this summer, the water park has added an extra 100-foot shade structure, as well as newly remodeled bathrooms for a cooler, more refreshing day at the park. Back this year are the morning water aerobics courses, and of course, Larry's Giant Subs will be open during park hours to offer guests hearty sandwiches, healthy salads and plenty of snacks.

Just By Hand Celebrates 10-year Anniversary
e idea struck like lightning unique, hand-made gift items are always best sellers... why not have a gift shop dedicated to only pieces made by hand by artisans? at was ten years ago when Cheryl and Van Hart opened Just By Hand on Pier Road in the Jekyll Island historic district shops. Since then, Just By hand has become one of the more popular stores becoming a regular stop for repeat guests.
"We love our customers, and they come back year-after-year to discover what new items we are carrying," stated Owner Cheryl Hart. "Guests are like family and they always nd something new in the store."
For Cheryl, it is all about the artists. Her passion for retail is matched by her passion for discovering unique works, made by hand by genuine artists who put their heart and soul into their art. Each piece has a story, and Cheryl is sure to relate and represent each piece and each artist to the customer.
Hospitality is also a key part of the business.
"We try to make every guest feel welcome and special," Cheryl continued. "And we often price below the suggested retail."
Gift items range from $.35 to $1,400 and include soaps, paintings, jewelry, sculpture and more. Special attention and care is standard, and special orders are no problem.
Find Just By Hand on Pier Road in the Jekyll Island historic district or online at shopjustbyhand.com.

COLLEGE STUDENTS contribute
Fourteen Master's and Doctoral
students
from
Middle
Tennessee State University
recently completed a field school at
the Jekyll Island Museum.
The opportunity was offered
as part of a program in public
history at Mhiddle Tennessee State
University, under the supervision of
Dr. Bren Martin and Museum Curator
Gretchen Greminger. Through hands-
on opportunities, the field school
students gained experience in the
many assorted duties of a museum
professional.
As part of their coursework,
students refreshed exhibits within
historic district cottages, conducted
oral history research, created an online
exhibit, designed a "travelling trunk"
tailored to meet school standards,
completed a historic structures report
to assist in upcoming preservation
work on Mistletoe Cottage, and
performed essential work in archival
records management.
Among other duties, students
also spent considerable time
cataloguing and inventorying
some of the thousands of objects that make up the Jekyll Island Museum collection.
"We have a very extensive collection of artifacts," Greminger noted. "Each time we complete the documentation process on an object, we increase our ability to share these pieces of Jekyll Island history with the public."
Greminger declared that the amount of work completed over the course of the field school was phenomenal for the museum, and said that she hopes to continue the partnership next year.
"Hosting the field school on Jekyll Island was a real win-win situation," said Greminger. "While the students gained some real world experience and earned a trip to the beach, the museum gained some great interpretive tools to enhance our guest experience."
The Jekyll Island Museum offers daily tours and exhibits of the Jekyll Island Club National Historic Landmark District.
CAN YOU FIND IT?
This artifact is on exhibit in one of the
tour cottages in Jekyll Island's National
Historic Landmark District. Hidden in
plain sight, it is part of an interactive
scavenger hunt recently created by field
school students from Middle Tennessee
State University for the Jekyll Island Museum.
Labelled as "#DoYouSeeWhatISee," this object is
a
stereoscope, also known as a stereopticon or stereo viewer. It was used to
see a pair of two-dimensional images in 3D. Stereoscopes were a popular
form of entertainment from the 1880s to the 1930s. This is just one of many
artifacts that you can search for if your tour of the historic district tour
stops at Indian Mound Cottage. Tweet the Jekyll Island Twitter page if you
find "#DoYouSeeWhatISee" and other artifacts on the scavenger hunt list.
Stickers are available as prizes for successful seekers!

A Grateful Life
Our Walks on the Beach
By Lauren Garvey agratefullife.weebly.com
It was a beautiful day, with blue skies and puffy white clouds floating by while sluggishly changing their shape. .At ten years old, Mia is our last child born nearly fifteen years after her older sister. Mia and I look so forward to our daily walk together on the beach.
Starting out she holds my hand, while the dogs tug their leash and sniff everything in their path. We are fascinated by our ever-changing coastline and talk about the transformation since the last time we walked. Mia is an observer, noticing the slightest difference from the day before.
She stops long enough to look at a little worm I show her in the sand. Happily says she has seen one before and greets the tiny white caterpillar like a long lost friend. Mia treats all creatures with an equal and sincere respect, whether it is a human or a little worm. Just one of the many things I love about her.
After she helps the worm make its way around the dogs and out of danger, she continues her observations and I sit back on the edge of the warm, white, sandy dunes. My mind wonders to places that would have worried me at one time. Now, as I get older and grow in my relationship with God, I believe that all things really do happen for a reason. Allowing Him to be the pilot of my travels, trusting in His love for me, I am able to ponder without fear. That is not to say that I don't worry about my children, or money, or our health as we age, I do. But faith is my "safety net" and my belief brings confidence. With all of the trials our world throws at us, I am so grateful to have this belief. It works for me!
So very thankful as well to have this time with my littlest love, noticing almost daily her changing into the young woman I know she soon will be. For now, I will be content to walk the beach holding hands and finding the magic in everything she sees.
