NATURE

SPRING MEANS SEA TURTLE ACTIVITY

Spring is in full swing, and on Jekyll Island, that means it's time to hit the beach for another season of sea turtle nesting research.
Nesting season on Jekyll Island spreads from May to August, overlapping slightly with the July to October hatching season, and May 1 marks the first patrol of the summer. During patrols, staff at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center and members of the AmeriCorps Research Team walk along Jekyll's beaches every day, looking for signs of sea turtle nests and hatchlings. Once the sun sets, the research teams head back to the sandy shores for their night patrols, when they look for turtles to tag for future monitoring purposes.
During these months of nesting, the Sea Turtle Center staff offer guests several interactive programs to broaden their understanding of sea turtle nesting habits. While on Jekyll Island, you'll certainly want to take advantage of these exciting and unique trips of discovery!
This season, the Center will offer:
Ride with Night Patrol (May/JuneJuly): Participants have the opportunity to ride on ATV patrols along with

GSTC biologists to locate nesting female sea turtles.
"Egg-sperience" Dawn Patrol (JulySeptember/October): Participants accompany GSTC biologists on a morning patrol as they monitor and excavate sea turtle nests.
Turtle walks (June-July): After a 30-45 minute presentation at the GSTC on the natural history of sea turtles, guests head to the beach for a guided tour aimed towards discovering a nesting sea turtle.
Nest walks (August-September): Guests learn about coastal ecology during a 30-minute walk on the beach. They then meet up with the GSTC biologists to observe nest excavations.
Nest Trackers (nesting season): 2013 is the launch of this brand new program where participants sign up to receive updates on a selected nest. They will receive an official certificate, information on the female who laid the nest, a notification when the nest is close to hatching, and a final progress report after the nest has been inventoried.
For information on these programs, visit georgiaseaturtlecenter.org.

Next it's the Force Three, which is just that: a ride of three fun yet forceful slides. Flash Flood features a double inner tube slide spiraling down a 350-foot-long, 7-foot wide curvy slide; and Thunder and Lightning are twin slides that send you spiraling down 150-feet in fully-enclosed flumes. These rides triple the splash for the whole family!
Cool off from the Georgia heat with a refreshing soak in the Splash Zone. Get dunked by our giant bucket, or enjoy kid-friendly water guns.

Not up for a twisting, zipping, dunking ride? Spend some time in the calm, refreshing Turtle Creek. This slow-paced portion of the park offers inner-tubes that only go 3 miles per hour in a lazy river loop around the park.
For the smaller swimmers, try out the Kiddie Zone. Designed for children not tall enough for the bigger attractions, this park staple features two kiddie slides, waterfalls, and plenty of shade.

HISTORY

SNEAK PEAK AT HOLLYBOURNE

In honor of Historic Preservation Month, the Jekyll Island Museum staff will offer special behind-the-scenes tours of Hollybourne cottage every Saturday in May. This rare look into Jekyll Island's past affords guests the opportunity to imagine the building as it once appeared and to learn about the family that considered this island home.
Hollybourne was built in 1890 for Charles Stewart Maurice, a pioneer in iron bridge construction who built many major landmarks across the nation. His magnificent Jekyll Island cottage is an architectural wonder in its own right, having been significantly influenced by Maurice's background in bridge engineering.
Tours of this spectacular cottage will take guests through the remarkable leaded glass doors of the house into the main foyer. Guests will also be allowed explore many rooms in the home, including the front parlor, the dining room, the gunroom, the kitchen, and even the butler's pantry.

Of course, tour guides will be on hand to discuss the unique design of the cottage, as well as provide information about ongoing efforts to save and restore the building.

Hollybourne is unique from other preserved Jekyll Island properties in the Historic District, as it has not been extensively restored or provided a furnished interior. Instead, its beauty has been gradually unveiled year by year through the persistent efforts of the Jekyll Island Museum.

Slowly during the last 15 years, staff, interns, and volunteers have worked to stabilize the cottage and make it accessible on a limited basis. Dick Tennyson heads up a team that works with the museum to preserve the cottage. In recent months, Tennyson and his group of volunteers have restored the main floor in the parlor and the dining room. They have bolstered sagging floor joists, salvaged original floorboards, and replaced what original pieces could not be saved. On the second floor, they

SPICE UP YOUR JEKYLL SUMMER

Since the Jekyll Island Convention Center opened last May, guests have raved about varying aspects of the space, from the beauty of the structure to the attention paid to details. Topping the list of praise heard by center staff is one element not often found at convention centers: People love the food.
Straying from the rubbery chicken and banquet cuisine typically found at convention centers, Shawn Prescott, Executive Chef at the Center, and his staff make a distinct effort to keep dishes fresh and recipes unique.
"In the kitchen, my crew and I all share a very real passion for creating inventive dishes and delivering one-of-a-kind experiences for our guests," said Prescott, who grew up cooking and has been a chef for more than 16 years. "Whether we're serving you an elegant meal at a wedding reception, a fun low country boil

or a casual wine and cheese event, we're committed to providing excellent service and amazing food."
As much as proven this spring, when Prescott and the Convention Center chefs took home 2nd Place at the Taste of Glynn foodie festival, winning for their Braised Short Rib Sliders. The sliders, coupled with the fire-roasted chili and cilantro relish, are a zesty, impressive dish ideal for summer picnics and cookouts by the pool.
True, it took Prescott the better part of three days to roast his peppers and prep the dish, but he assures this menu item can be made in a few hours for more hurried home cooks.
The recipe here has been scaled down from the original serving size, but can still feed a large-size group. Feel free to cut the recipe down again for smaller crowds.

For Short Rib: 5 lbs. Boneless Short Rib Salt, Pepper, Onion Powder
and Garlic Powder, all to taste 1 bottle Red Wine (Cabernet works best) 2 quarts Beef Broth For Chili and Cilantro Relish: 1 lb. Anaheim Peppers 1 lb. Poblano Peppers lb. Jalapeno Peppers 1 bunch Flat Leaf Parsley 1 bunch Cilantro Honey, to taste Lemon Juice, to taste 2 cups Ranch Dressing Soft Slider Rolls
It's Like Vegas

Steps:
For ribs: Season short ribs. Proceed to sear all sides of the rib until well browned. Remove and deglaze with wine and broth. Place short ribs back into liquid and slowly simmer for 2 to 3 hours. Remove and shred short ribs. Thicken sauce with a cornstarch and water paste. Combine sauce and short ribs and keep warm.
For chili: Roast whole peppers on a grill or in an oven. Cool and remove all stems and seeds of jalapeno. Finely chop cilantro and parsley. Pulse all sauce ingredients in a food processor for several seconds.
For ranch: Reserve some cilantro and add to ranch dressing.
Assemble the ribs, chili sauce and light smear of ranch dressing on a roll. Take a bite, repeat and enjoy!

SWEET SOUNDS TO FILL THE AIR

Celebrate the coming of summer with two great outdoor jam sessions! This month, the Golden Isles will host two fan-favorite concert series: Rhythm on the River, and Jazz in the Park. Pack a picnic, bring your blanket, and get ready to soak in some great seaside tunes.
Held every spring and autumn in historic downtown Brunswick, Rhythm on the River features a selection of both local and regional musicians, each with a distinctly different set of talents. On May 29, Rhythm on the River will feature The Tom McGees, a ska-rock band hailing from West Virginia. This nine-member group combines guitars,

drums and horns to produce a defined, intricate showcase of talents.
Rhythm on the River will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 29, in Queens Square at the corner of Newscastle and Mansfield Street in Old Town Brunswick. Admission is $10 for adults, with children under the age of 16 admitted free. For more information, visit brunswickgeorgia.net.
Head over to St. Simons Island this month for another compelling outdoor showcase of musical skills at Jazz in the Park. Being held May 26 at the oceanside Neptune Park, this evening concert hosted by Golden Isles Arts &

Humanities will present local favorite, The Phil Morrison Trio, featuring Michael Hulett. As always, the show is scheduled for high tide, when the breezes are cooler. Jazz in the Park will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday,

May 26, at Neptune Park near the Pier Village on St. Simons. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 12, and free for children under 6 years old. For more information, visit goldenislesarts.org.

WATCH OUT FOR TERRAPINS

Diamondback terrapins are truly unique creatures! These turtles are the only species of marsh turtle in the western hemisphere, and their broad range extends from Cape Cod, along the seaboard and over to the Texas portion of the Gulf of Mexico. Unlike sea turtles that spend their entire lives in water, terrapins spend time both in water and on land.
Sadly, diamondback terrapin populations are declining because of several man-made threats, such as boat and vehicle strikes, habitat loss, and pollution. On Jekyll Island, one of the main threats to terrapins is being hit by motor vehicles on our roadways.

in nesting season. Once on the causeway, females attempt to cross the road to find nesting ground, but sometimes, vehicles get in the way. Since 2007, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center has found more than 940 dead terrapins on the causeway due to vehicle collisions.
Because of this troubling issue, staff at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center has focused on correcting the problem and saving more diamondback terrapins. The Center has worked to educate the public about the problem, as well as worked to rehabilitate struck turtles and has done research on management strategies to avoid future strikes.

In the busy summer season, from May to July, terrapin females leave their marsh home in search of higher ground to lay nests. The Downing Musgrove Causeway leading to and from the island offers ideal nesting grounds and attracts terrapin females

With the help of the University of Georgia, the Center is conducting research to evaluate using nest boxes and road signs to prevent drivers from hitting nesting terrapins. The general public is urged to take note of this serious issue and be extra careful on

the causeway during the nesting season.
Education, awareness and research will be keys to unlocking the answer on how to save these turtles. You can help in these conservation efforts by keeping close watch when driving on the causeway, as well as making a donation to the Jekyll Island Foundation, which supports research at the Center.
Visit georgiaseaturtlecenter.org for information.

Staying Safe: To ensure the safety and enjoyment of all who visit Jekyll Island, please adhere to the following measures.
Should 911 be required, please inform the dispatcher that you are on Jekyll Island. Barrier Island signals tend to drift and 911 calls may be answered in Glynn or Camden County.
In case of an emergency, location is vital to emergency responders. Take note of your surroundings and location. Beach crossovers are numbered for your safety.
Use caution on sandbars, they can be covered by 10' of water at high tide.
Golf carts must have but are not limited to having: braking system, reflectors, horn, review mirror, seatbelts and hand holds for each passenger.

Bikes should be ridden on the bike paths. Bike helmets are required for riders age 16 & younger. No golf carts on bike paths. No vehicles on the beach. ATV's are not allowed anywhere Georgia State Law. No fires on the beach. No glass containers on the beach. Stay off Dunes. Only take home empty shells and dead sand dollars. Pets must be under immediate control of their owners and on a leash no longer than 16' at all times.

No pets allowed on South Beach between South Dunes Picnic Area and 2000' Northeast of St. Andrews Sound Picnic Area. Stay away from marked turtle nests. Fill in sand castles and holes on the beach. Pet owners are to remove and dispose pet fecal material. Feeding of any wild animals is prohibited. No fishing in fresh water lakes. Metal or mineral detection devices are prohibited. No fireworks. No overnight parking in public areas. Jason Richardson, Director of Public Safety. 912.635.4035
