NEW AND IMPROVED
WHAT'S NEW

Starting this month, you may notice a few changes and tweaks within the pages of Beachscape. Don't worry- all your favorite monthly features will still be there, such as our tide charts, events calendar, and dining guide.

What's new is the addition of our Facebook Friends Photo section. Here, we share memories captured by our guests and residents, who have posted their Jekyll pictures on our Facebook page. You'll also notice we have added a Junior Jekyll page. This kid's corner is ideal for our younger readers, and features fun facts, games and information to incorporate into your island visit.

2, 4, 6 Passenger Cars Two Jekyll Island Locations

Also new to Beachscape is the Off-Island Excursions section, where we feature entertaining events and local hot spots for you to enjoy while on vacation. We know you came to see Jekyll Island, but if you're itching for a little time off island, this feature should steer you in the right direction. For all our island foodies, we have likewise added the Island Cuisine feature, with a recipe and interview from a Jekyll chef. With so much great food on Jekyll, we felt it was only fair to share!
Additionally, Beachscape is now being integrated into area schools through the Newspapers in Education initiative. If you are are interested in this outlet as a non-traditional learning resource, email Anna Hall at ahall@jekyllisland.com. We hope you'll enjoy these new additions to Beachscape- Happy reading!

EVENTS

ART & ANTIQUES FESTIVAL

Find new inspiration for your home dcor and take in the creativity that flows on Jekyll Island with the annual Art & Antiques Festival! Being held March 7 to 10, the annual showcase combines a collection of herald antiques from purveyor Jay N. Melrose, LLC., with the beauty created by members of the Jekyll Island Arts Association.
Event-goers can peruse an antiques-filled showroom set up in the historic Morgan Center, then browse the wide variety of artwork from Jekyll Island artists displayed in Goodyear Cottage, the Art Association headquarters.
An antiques Preview Party will be held the Thursday prior to the opening of the festival, complete with hors d'oeuvres from a talented team of Jekyll Island Club Hotel chefs. The Preview Party will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 7, and party tickets are $25.
During the three-day hunt for antique treasures, guests can view wares from up to 25 antique vendors, who will be set up on both levels of the historic Morgan Center. The antiques side of the festival will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday March 8 and Saturday March 9, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday March 10. Daily admission is $10. A four-day VIP pass, which includes

admission every day and entrance to the preview party, is also available for only $40. In addition to shopping for antique goods, guests can also learn the rules of the road from a long-time collector. A lecture and luncheon will be held the Saturday of the festival with antiques expert and architect Bill Ingram presenting his experience in field. The luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Grand Dining Room of the Club Hotel, and tickets can be purchased for $45 per person.
Alongside the antiques showcase is the Jekyll Island Art Association's annual festival. At the art spectacular, the association's 432 members display a vast collection of pieces, from fine art and folk art, to fiber arts and even hands-on demonstration.
The festival will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, at Goodyear Cottage. Admission to the art section of the festival is free. Hungry art-shoppers can also stop by the arts caf from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., which will be set up at Goodyear Cottage.

HISTORY

JEKYLL ISLAND STATE PARK TURNS 65 YEARS OLD

When Jekyll Island first opened to the public as a state park 65 years ago, guests eagerly traveled by boat to explore this island paradise that had, for so long, been the exclusive playground of America's wealthiest families.
Formerly "a rich man's paradise," the island was declared a "people's island." It offered opportunities for recreation and pleasure along the Georgia Coast to everyone, not just those who could afford to live in a millionaire's wonderland.
When the State of Georgia opened the island to everyone, it marked the first time in history that a sizable portion of the Peach State's coastline was available for public use. As word spread that Jekyll was open to all who wanted to come here, energies

mounted, and plans were quickly implemented to transform Jekyll into the finest seashore park in America.
On March 6, 1948, hundreds of Georgians arrived to experience the virtues and entertainments Jekyll Island offers. Visitors enjoyed delightful dips at Georgia's first public beach, as well as experienced horseback riding, fishing, and boar hunting.
Swimming pools, tennis courts, a golf course, a skeet shooting range, and a bowling alley offered additional island-based adventures. Opening Day events even featured an extravagant dinner in the Grand Dining Room, topped off with mixing, mingling and, of course, dancing.
Today, under the management

and oversight of the Jekyll Island Authority, hundreds of thousands of visitors arrive at the beautiful island resort annually to explore its many charms, discover its beauty and to become an integral part of its history and its future.

To dig deeper into Jekyll Island's past, visit the Jekyll Island Museum located on Stable Road.
Exhibits are open to the public free of charge, and tours of the Historic District depart daily. For more information, call 912.635.4036.

This is best done by having landmarks in view, and being aware of direction and distance. Also make note of your entry point into a remote area. Each beach crossover is numbered.

ISLAND CUISINE

Jekyll Island Club Hotel Executive Sous Chef Lewie Mashburn possesses two very distinct traits that define who he is, both as a person and as a cook.
For starters, the man can talk to anyone, about anything, anytime. Simply give him a topic and an open ear, and he can come up with engaging, witty conversation.
Chef Mashburn, too, uses a similar whimsical skill set when working in the Club Hotel kitchen. Give him a mish-mash of ingredients, a pan, and an audience, and the man can whip up a gourmet feast of creative and gastronomic heights. This was the mindset Mashburn followed when he developed the recipe he is sharing here, which he created while working as

head chef at an equestrian farm in North Georgia. The recipe, a little something he calls South Georgia Wellington, is inspired by the traditional English dish Beef Wellington, but has the added pizzazz of Mashburn's Southern, rustic touch.
"South Georgia Wellington is a little something I came up with one day because it's what I had, and I had to get food on the table," Mashburn said, again pointing to the fact that "on a whim" is his favorite cooking style.
"When I created the dish, I didn't know how it would turn out, and I got lucky, because South Georgia Wellington is just unbelievably good. We hope this recipe will bring a little Jekyll Island into your home."

South Georgia Wellington By: Lewie Mashburn
Yield 4 Servings
Ingredients: 4-2 to 3 oz Pork Tenderloin Medallions 1 Cup Cooked Collard Greens (Squeezed Dry) 4 Slices Mozzarella Cheese (or shredded) 1 box Phyllo Dough 1 Stick Unsalted Butter (melted) 4 Slices Salt Cured Ham
Sauce 2 cloves of Fresh Garlic (Minced) 1 Fresh Shallot (Minced) 1 Cup Merlot Wine 1 Cup Brown Stock 2 oz Whole Butter (soft) Salt-Pepper-Old Bay to taste 2 TBSP Olive Oil
Directions: Heat skillet with oil; when good and hot, sear pork medallions on both sides until brown. Place on sheet pan and cook in 350 degree oven until medium. Take pork out and cool for later use. While skillet is still hot, add shallots and garlic, saut for 1 minute then deglaze pan with Merlot. Add brown stock reduce until sticks to back of the spoon, add seasonings, take off heat, Whisk in soft butter until incorporated into sauce; sauce is ready to serve. Wrap pork wellington. Take melted butter and place one layer of Phyllo dough on board and butter it; do this until you get 6 layers of Phyllo dough. On one square place cheese in the middle, top with greens, then place pork medallion wrapped with ham. Fold corners and place on a greased sheet pan. When all four are done place into 350 degree oven until golden brown, take out and let rest 5 minutes. Ready to serve with merlot sauce.

13 JUNIOR JEKYLL AND EXCURSION
SPRING MEANS MOVING TIME
Spring is here and animals are on the move! Migration is the word commonly used to describe animals' seasonal movements. When we hear the word "migration," most people think of when birds fly south for the winter. This is an example of seasonal migration. Birds are a really good example of this natural phenomenon. But did you know that other animals also migrate? Monarch butterflies, dragonflies, whales and yes, even sea turtles are all examples of migratory animals.
At almost any time of the year, somewhere in the world, migration is going on. While the best known type of migration is seasonal, many animals will display daily migration (known as diel migration), like jellyfish following the light of the sun across a lake. Many aquatic animals even display diel migration by travelling up and down the water column (usually due to changes in temperature or light stimuli).
All of these different movement patterns help animals find food, find mates or avoid predators and bad environmental conditions. Diversity in migration behavior helps the Earth's biodiversity and overall health. Learn more about migration and other natural wonders at georgiaseaturtlecenter.org.

OFF ISLAND EXCURSION TO CINEMA

Year-round, the Golden Isles offers guests and residents a calendar loaded with activities, festivals and events, and this spring is no different. Whether you're a life-long resident, part-time dweller or only here for a few days, you'll find that the region is a stockpot of good times.
This month, in our new Off-Island Excursion section, we're highlighting an entertainment initiative launched at the Ritz Theatre in downtown Brunswick. Once a month, from November to April, the masterminds behind the Ritz Theatre's community programs host Cinema Gourmet, a night in the historic downtown city center that combines two of life's greatest treats: classic films, and gourmet grub.
For these special one-night events, Chef Kate Buchanan of Indigo Coastal Shanty digs deep into her creative recipe folder, whipping out a line-up of

dishes centered on her signature Asian, Caribbean and comfort food fusion styles.
Film historian Rob Nixon, a writer for the Turner Classic Movie web site and organizer of the event, likewise presents a lecture detailing the films path to

being, providing facts and background information to make the night even more fulfilling.
For the March event, Nixon will present "The Quiet Man," a 1952 classic film from famed American director John Ford. This highly-revered film starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara follows the trials of a retired American boxer as he returns to his native Ireland village, a journey during which he finds love, and himself.
The March edition of Cinema Gourmet will begin at 6:30 p.m. March 14, with the night starting out with food, drinks and the film presentation. The film will begin about 7:15 p.m. Tickets to Cinema Gourmet are $15 per person, and include the film, food and presentation. For more information and for tickets, please visit the Ritz Theatre web site at www.goldenislesarts.com or call 912.262.6934.

EVENTS
TOUR OF HOMES WELCOMES YOU

Southern hospitality is no myth on Jekyll Island. As much will be proven this spring, when the residents of Jekyll Island open their hearts and homes to you! This April, the Jekyll Island Authority and Jekyll Island Garden Club have teamed up to present the inaugural Island Inspired Tour of Homes.
During this day-long tour, attendees will take a behind-the-scenes look at the homes, personalities and people that create the unique daily culture of Jekyll Island. The six homes on the tour were chosen by members of the Garden Club, who identified each house for its special sense of character, ambiance and individuality. From Asian modernist to

beach chic casual, each home offers a different take on what it means to exude comfort and charm.
When planning the tour, members of the Garden Club were hoping to achieve one goal: to showcase the overall essence that makes up the island. "We want people to see how revitalization is not just a Jekyll Island Authority goal, but also is a goal that has been taken seriously by the island's residents," said Ginger Thomas, a Garden Club member and organizer of the event. "Just as the island has undergone revitalization, so have the homes. On the outside, our homes look like everyday houses. Once you come inside and see the amazing work that has been done by our residents, from

complete remodeling to just touching up a room or two, you'll be amazed. These homes are truly Island Inspired."
The Tour of Homes will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 27. Tour takers will be escorted to homes on a scheduled, guide-led trolley tour, or may take the tour on a bicycle. The first tour leaves from Great Dunes Park at 10 a.m. Transported trolley tours are $25 per person, and bicycle-led tours are $20. Tickets also include a beachside garden party for refreshments, held at Great Dunes Park. To purchase tickets online or find a list of local outlets where tickets are available, visit jekyllisland.com. Tickets may also be purchased the day of the event.

"When you can take something and see the innate value

of it, even if no one else sees it, then bring that value into

clarity, it brings with it a sense of pride. To take something

forgotten and renew it, it's a challenge, but one that should

be embraced."
