GOLF CAMP A BLAST

Attention young golfers- come join the club! This summer, the Jekyll Island Golf Club will host the annual Junior Golf Camp, where students learn from pros how to get into the swing of the game.
Jekyll Island's PGA professional instructors will tutor young golfers ages 6 to 14 on all aspects of the sport, including putting and chipping, oncourse instruction and proper etiquette. Instructors leading the camp tailor their lessons based on individual student's know-how and needs to ensure a personalized teaching experience.
This workshop is designed for students of all experience levels, from those brand new to the game to more knowledgeable players. Even highlyversed student golfers are welcome to attend--this is a game where you never stop learning!
Once the camp is over, students have the

opportunity to walk Jekyll Island's 9-hole course on their own. Students in the summer golfing program will also be given discounted rates at the Jekyll Island practice facility and on the course throughout the summer, to allow for children to learn and grow in their golf skills. Additionally, students will be allowed to play for free throughout the year with a paying adult.
Camps will be held June 10 to 14; July 1 to 5; and July 22 to 26. These four-day camps are $249 per child, or $200 per child if multiple children from the same family participate. Lunch is included each day of the camp.
All participants will also receive a Jekyll Island golf shirt, hat and sleeve of golf balls, as well as a video of their swing using V1 Video Analysis Software. For more information and to sign up, call the Jekyll Island Golf Clubhouse at 912.635.2368.

STEP BACK IN TIME AT HORTON HOUSE

Take a giant step back in time with us on Jekyll Island for the 7th annual Horton House Living History event! Being held Saturday, June 8, this daylong event hosted by the Jekyll Island Museum offers guests a sneak peek into the life and times of the Horton House ruins, just as it would have been in colonial days.

"This event truly demonstrates Jekyll Island's strategic role in the struggle for British survival in Georgia," said Andrea Marroquin, Historical Program Coordinator with the Jekyll Island Museum. "It's a rare chance to look back at how life was for the early Georgia settlers, mixed with very fun activities for the whole family."
Horton House, named for William Horton, who was a top military official and was granted Jekyll Island in 1735, was a home to indentured servants and often used to supply goods to troops at nearby Fort Frederica. What was life like during Horton's time on the island? You can discover that and more at this

living history event. With this annual showcase of history, guests can visit with historic figures and sample the daily life of long ago through a variety of hands-on activities. Musket demonstrations, 18th century crafts, period music, and colonial games offer active fun for young and old alike.
General Oglethorpe, portrayed by Scott Hodges, will be on-hand, as will costumed leatherworkers, pottery

makers and more. Balladeer Jamie Keena will provide toe-tapping music and popular 18th century tunes, while museum staffers help attendees create rag dolls, punched-tin ornaments and make rope from natural fibers. Need a snack? Try samples of the authentic, hearth-baked bread and freshly churned butter.
This special colonial day of exploration and celebration will be

held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 8, at the Horton House ruins. Admission is free. For more information call 912-635-4036 or visit the Jekyll Island Museum on Stable Road.

SPICE UP YOUR JEKYLL SUMMER

There's just something about cracking a crab claw with the sounds of the ocean in the background that screams: "You're on vacation!" There's just something about peeling a Wild Georgia Shrimp under the banner of beaming sunshine that screams: "Enjoy yourself!" There's just something about sipping a chilled Margarita as you lounge on a pier and watch the sun go down that screams: "This is the life!"
At the Rah Bar on the Jekyll Island wharf, these screaming voices come together to form a chorus that, in unison, sings: "Ahhh. It doesn't get better than this."

verifiable opinion of dinners.
"The Low Country Boil. Get that," she nods in confidence. "It's our signature. Even before I worked at the Rah Bar, I sent people here just for that dish."
When Huling brings out the silver tray piled high with a mound of Wild Georgia Shrimp, fresh crawfish, sliced potatoes, sausage, corn and a massive crab leg, it's easy to see why this meal makes the cut. It's not only impressive to look at, it's impossibly tasty, sprinkled with the restaurant's signature special (and secret) seasoning.

The Rah Bar has become known as Jekyll Island's go to for a leisurely seafood meal, where guests can prop up by the boats and watch the tides come in, go out, and come in again. Hours can pass in a flash. Conversations freely roll. And best of all, the food is simply spectacular.
When reviewing the menu, it's hard to make a final decision on what to order- which is where the great staff comes in. Rah Bar waitress Ashley Huling doesn't hesitate to offer a

Of course, the restaurant has a few other tasty tricks up the chef 's sleeves. If the piled-high Low Country Boil seems a bit daunting, opt instead for a simple serving of Wild Georgia Shrimp, or the fan-favorite jerk fish tacos. But save room for dessert. You'll want to top any meal off with a slice of key lime pie.

Want to try your hand at the infamous Low Country Boil? Here's a standard recipe. (Sorry, folks, Rah Bar can't share their top secret seasoning.) This recipe should feed six people.

Recipe

Steps:

Crab boil, 2 teaspoons per quart of water
12 red new potatoes 6 (4-inch) smoked
sausage link sausage 6 ears corn 3 lbs. fresh Wild Georgia
Shrimp, unpeeled

Fill a large pot with enough water to cover all of the ingredients. Add the crab boil and bring to a boil. Adjust the crab boil to suit your taste. When the water boils, add the potatoes and sausage. Cook on medium heat for 20 minutes. Add corn and cook for an additional 10 minutes. Add shrimp and cook for no more than 3 minutes. Drain, serve and enjoy!

EVENTS REMEMBER CIVIL WAR ERA

Burning of Darien Celebrated with Events and Commemorations

In June of 1863, the city of Darien was a ghost town. Residents and business owners had fled the city, fearing Union troops would blockade, rampage and ravage their homes. The 54th Massachusetts, an all-black regiment of Union Soldiers, had been sent by Civil War commanders, to occupy the town and choke the South into submission.
After being in Darien less than a month, Colonel James Montgomery

ordered his men to pick the town over for supplies, then pillage it completely. Homes, churches and buildings were burned. Crops were destroyed. Slaves were freed and recruited into Union service. The town was completely demolished and left for dead.
This devasting moment of Darien history was reenacted in the 1989 film, "Glory," and will again play out for viewers this June with the 150th

Commemoration of the Burning of Darien. The days-long event will feature several celebrations, including the Grand Opening of the Burning of Darien Civil War Museum-Trailhead Center, being held June 11, as well as a Sherman's March Lecture at Fort King George on June 20.
A community festival is also planned to mark the significant moment of Darien history, with the Town Festival and Living History Re-Enactment

slated for June 15.
For complete details, times and locations of the Burning of Darien activities, visit burningofdarien.com.
Darien is located about 40 minutes north of Jekyll Island, in McIntosh County. The city is easily accessible on Highway 17 North or Interstate 95. For more information about the city, check out their website at visitdarien.com.

GEORGIA SEA TURTLE CENTER
VOLUNTEERS SHELL IT OUT H
G

"Those who can, do. Those who can do more, volunteer." This quote from an unknown author is more than true for the volunteers of the Georgia Sea Turtle Center who "do more" regularly. People who volunteer with the Georgia Sea Turtle Center come from near and far to lend helping hands and help spread the message of sea turtle conservation. Whether from right down the road, or half way across the continent in Canada, these dedicated volunteers are willing to do whatever is needed to help forward the mission of the center.
Center volunteers have donated more than 25,000 hours in the short six years since the Center's inception, and can be found working in various capacities from helping at special events and cleaning beaches, to scrubbing patient's tanks. One

volunteer, Gary Buckles, was even chosen as the International Sea Turtle Society's Volunteer of the Year in 2012, an honor which he truly deserves for his extreme commitment to his volunteer role.
Without the regular, incredible showing of support seen by these volunteers, the Center would be unable to fulfill its' vision for sea turtle conservation.
If you want to get in game and start volunteering, please visit www.georgiaseaturtlecenter.org/join-us/ volunteer. This experience is not only beneficial for the Center, it's also rewarding for individuals. See for yourself and get involved today!
About the Georgia Sea Turtle Center: Rehabilitate.

Research. Educate. These are the overarching goals of the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island. Established in 2007 on Jekyll Island and operated by the Jekyll Island Authority, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center was developed as an institution devoted to the rehabilitation of injured sea turtles and preservation of the delicate balance of the oceanic ecosystem.
Through sea turtle rehabilitation, research and educational programs, Georgia Sea Turtle Center staff work to increase awareness of habitat and wildlife conservation challenges, promote responsibility for ecosystem health and empower individuals to act locally, regionally, and globally to protect the environment. HONEY AND TURTLES GO HAND IN HAND

Perhaps we should change its name to the Georgia Bee & Sea Turtle Center?
What do bees and sea turtles have in common? Honey is the answer. Bees make it, and here at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center we use it to help cure sea turtles' wounds. Yes, you heard that right. Honey has many curative properties that make it a wonderful natural medicine.
First, honey is thick and sticky. That means that it is easy to make it stay in cracks and crevices. Second, it is acidic with a pH of around 2 to 4. This property makes it so that no bacteria or fungus or anything bad can grow in it. This means that it is a

natural antibiotic, antifungal and antimicrobial.
Honey has a natural enzyme that bees produce in their saliva. This enzyme makes it so that, on contact with skin, honey turns into a mild form of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). If you've ever skinned your knee and used H2O2 on your scrape, it bubbles up white and helps to clean it out. Honey works the same way on a turtle's wound. Then we pack it with honeycomb to form a water tight seal, and let the honey help heal the wound from the inside out.
Several local beekeepers donate honey and honeycomb to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center to help our turtle patients. In addition, we keep two

beehives on Jekyll Island, in the community garden. Along with our vegetable garden where we raise food for our turtle patients, our beehives are part of our Green Initiatives.
Check out some other ways you can join us in making our planet a better place for sea turtles and people! For more information visit georgiaseaturtlecenter.org
