Special Olympics organizations provide an important opportunity for young adults with disabilities to experience the joy associated with participating in various sporting events; and
Special Olympics Georgia hosts an event with more than 23,000 athletes and more than 15,000 volunteers; and
The athletes in these games participate in a wide range of sports, including aquatic events , track and field, soccer, tennis, rhythmic gymnastics, badminton, volleyball, and table tennis; and
The competition gives young adults continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness . They participate in the sharing of gifts, skills , and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community; and
The Special Olympics Athlete Oath, "Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt," embodies the spirit and heart of these athletes and is something from which every Georgian can learn; now
THEREFORE:
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim May 16-22 as SPECIAL OLYMPICS WEEK in Georgia and urge all Georgians to recognize the Special Olympics athletes for their displays of skill, courage, and wholesome competition.
In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 26th day of February in the year of our Lord two thousand sixteen.
