By the Governor of the State of Georgia, a proclamation, 2014 April 16; By the Governor of the State of Georgia, a proclamation: Georgia Classics Week

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA

WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS:
THEREFORE:

A PROCLAMATION
GEORGIA CLASSICS WEEK
The Latin, Greek, and Greco-Roman civilization remains fundamental to understanding our own language, culture, and intellectual make up; and
The languages of Greek and Latin equip us with a strong foundation for mastering Romance languages such as French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, and Spanish; and
The Georgia Junior Classical League (GJCL) is dedicated to the continued study of the Classics. The GJCL is comprised of Latin, Greek, and Classics students from more than 58 middle and high schools across the state; and
The study of classics requires and develops analytical and reasoning skills and provides students with a stronger understanding of the beginnings of our modern government, an insight into the study of classical literature, and an understanding of the Greek and Roman philosophers; and
The GJCL works to further the recognition of the traditional enduring qualities of the Classics in our literature, language, architecture, fine arts, governmental structure, law, and the broad aspects of science. Georgia Classics Week provides an opportunity for the celebration of the American Classical tradition through educational ventures, publicity activities, and community service projects across the state; now
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim April 1 5-21, 2014, as GEORGIA CLASSICS WEEK.
In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 16th day of April in the year of our Lord two thousand fourteen.
