BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS: THEREFORE: A PROCLAMATION GEORGIA CLASSICS WEEK The Latin, Greek, and Greco-Roman civilization remains fundamental to understanding our own language, culture, and intellectual make up; and The languages of Greek and Latin equip us with a strong foundation for mastering Romance languages such as French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, and Spanish; and The Georgia Junior Classical League (GJCL) is dedicated to the continued study of the Classics. The GJCL is comprised of Latin, Greek, and Classics students from more than 58 middle and high schools across the state; and The study of classics requires and develops analytical and reasoning skills and provides students with a stronger understanding of the beginnings of our modern government, an insight into the study of classical literature, and an understanding of the Greek and Roman philosophers; and The GJCL works to further the recognition of the traditional enduring qualities of the Classics in our literature, language, architecture, fine arts, governmental structure, law, and the broad aspects of science. Georgia Classics Week provides an opportunity for the celebration of the American Classical tradition through educational ventures, publicity activities, and community service projects across the state; now I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim April 1 5-21, 2014, as GEORGIA CLASSICS WEEK.
