The Georgia State Department of Education has made available the
resources of its AudioVisual Service to the public libraries of the state
that can qualify for this service A special group of films for public library
use has been provided in addition to the collection of films for school use
Public libraries may register to use both collections subject to the regulations
governing each

It is the purpose of the public library service to lend films to
county cr regional libraries for use in their own library programs and for
loan to responsible organized groups and agencies exclusive of public schools
who are following a serious educational program and turn to the library for pro
gram materials Local county or regional libraries giving film service to organi
zations should establish responsibility for use and care of films
In addition to this catalog libraries giving film service to their
communities will need to have available certain basic film lists and film rental
library catalogs The following have proved to be helpful

FROM PUBLIC LIBRARY COLLECTION
1 Fill in application form for use of these films LAVl and mail with
1000 annual fee to
State Department of Education
AudioVisual Service

2 Make requests only on the official blanks AV2
3 Requests may be made in one of two ways
a Make requests for a full calendar month all at one time and be sure
that they are mailed not later than the 20th of the month preceding
b Make requests twice a month in the following manner
Requests from the 1st through the 15th of the month must be mailed
no later than the 23rd of the preceding month Requests from the
16th of the month through the 31st of the month must be mailed no
later than the 7th of that same month
k Start with the first date that you wish to use films and follow a pro
gressive date sequence to the end of the period for which you are making
your requests Do not mix the months or the dates
5 Up to five films can be booked for a period of from one to thirty days
with no more than five to be held at one time Always specify the length
of time wanted
6 Librarians or coordinators must sign each request with complete street
address and town Requests cannot be accepted from anyone else
7 If damage occurs return the film to the above address at once for repairs
8 DO NOT REWIND THE MATERIAL
9 Always return the films as booked and in the same cases in which they are
received
10 Leave the shipping tickets in the cases
11 When it is necessary for films to be cancelled always return the confirma
tion and check the space at the bottom of the blank indicating cancellation
12 Always return films promptly so as to reach us by the due date and never
hold over for any reason unless permission is granted by the AudioVisual
Service
13 All films must be returned on serviceable reels of the same size as received
on These must be straightsided reels

regarding any variations from any one of these regulations
2 STATISTICS
It has become increasingly important that certain statistics be
kept and reported in order to have an accurate measurement of the extent
of use and of the effectiveness of films in public libraries
Statistical forms used by the ALA Office for Adult Education
ask for the following information regarding films
1 Total prints in library collection
2 Number of prints available from cooperative annually
3 Total shortterm or spot booked films
k Total number of showings
How many of these were library sponsored
For home use Schools Community groups
5 Total audience
6 Total expenditure for procurement of films
Georgia libraries using the Public Library Film Service are
urged to gather this information as the films are loaned This will
simplify reporting to the agencies which gather statistics
SUGGESTIONS FOR PURCHASE
Librarians who have seen films or reviews of films which they
would like to recommend for inclusion in this collection are urged to send
the titles and all available information to the Public Library Service office
at 92 Mitchell Street S W Atlanta 3 Georgia The staff members who are
responsible for arranging for previews will welcome such suggestions throughout
the year They will also welcome suggestions as to subjects on which additional
films are needed Such suggestions from those who use the film service help to
keep it uptodate and ready to meet the actual needs of the libraries
