Enclosed is the County Jail Inmate Information Report for August 2004. This report reflects the inmate population on Thursday, August 5, 2004. This month, all 149 of the functional county jails provided inmate information. The data in this report represents 100 percent of the county jails reporting and 100 percent of the State's population.

In August 2004, the number of inmates held in county jails decreased by 183 inmates to 33,737. With the opening of additional beds in Fannin County (+ 42 beds) and a new jail addition in Newton County (+ 144 beds), the capacity of county jails increased by 186 beds to 36,539. The number of inmates awaiting trial increased by 600 inmates to 20,831 and the number of sentenced inmates awaiting transfer to State Institutions decreased by 341 inmates to 4,127.

1 In cooperation with the Georgia Crime Information Center, the Georgia Department of Community Affairs compiles and publishes this report for the Georgia Sheriffs' Association and the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia. 2 This figure does not include jails presently at 100% or that would exceed 100% if not for the boarding out of inmates. Since the purpose of this report is to count the total number of inmates housed in county jails, there are no provisions in this report to separately count the number of inmates sent to other county facilities for housing. Rather, each county reports only on the number of inmates held in their facility on the first Thursday of the month. Inmates that are sent to other county jails for housing are counted by the county jail housing those inmates. Since municipalities do not report inmate statistics, any Sheriff that sends inmates to a city jail for housing should count those inmates in their county totals when reporting to GCIC.
