Enclosed is the County Jail Inmate Information Report for December 2003. This report reflects the inmate population on Thursday, December 4, 2003. This month, all 149 of the functional county jails provided inmate information. The data in this report represents 100 percent of the county jails reporting and 100 percent of the State's population.

In December 2003, the number of inmates held in county jails decreased by 872 inmates to 32,788. Meanwhile, the capacity of county jails increased by 100 beds to 35,005 as a result of additional beds being added in Henry (+ 84 beds) and Monore (+ 16 beds) counties. The number of inmates awaiting trial decreased by 504 inmates to 19,685 and the number of sentenced inmates awaiting transfer to State Institutions increased by 182 inmates to 4,827.

1 In cooperation with the Georgia Crime Information Center, the Georgia Department of Community Affairs compiles and publishes this report for the Georgia Sheriffs' Association and the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia. 2 This figure does not include jails presently at 100% or that would exceed 100% if not for the boarding out of inmates. Since the purpose of this report is to count the total number of inmates housed in county jails, there are no provisions in this report to separately count the number of inmates sent to other facilities for housing. Rather, each county reports only on the number of inmates held in their facility on the first Thursday of the month. Inmates that are sent elsewhere for housing are counted by the facility housing those inmates.
