COTTON VARIETY TESTS, 1925. By EDGAR F. GROSSMAN, Entomologist.

INTRODUCTION.
A report on all experiments and tests with cotton varieties conducted by the Georgia State Board of Entomology is given in this bulletin. The work was carried out on the Thomasville Experiment Station, Thomasville, Thomas County, Georgia, and consisted of extended experimentation with forty-seven varieties arid strains of cotton obtained, with a few exceptions, through the courtesy of Mr. W. J. Davis, Agronomist, Coastal Plain Experiment Station, Tifton, Georgia. Unfortunately, several well known varieties grown in Georgia were omitted from these tests, not by choice but because the seed were not available at planting time.
With a detailed account of how the following data was collected it is hoped the cotton grower may be guided in selecting the best cotton variety for his own particular locality. It must be noted, however, that the experiments herein described were all conducted on one type of soil only: sandy loam with clay sub-soil.
A most important factor in cotton growing, one which cannot be controlled or even pre-determined by the grower, is the weather, because: First, the weather may or may not favor the boll weevil as shown by the past few seasons, when in 1923 by poisoning, the weevil was controlled with difficulty, and where the grower did not poison, very little if any cotton was made. In 1924 and 19~5 the ,boll weevil was easily controlled and in many cases growers who used no poison at all made a creditable amount of cotton. Secondly, the weather may or may not favor cotton plant diseases such as "Cotton wilt" or "Black root," Anthracnose, and Angular leaf spot, all of which were but slightly in evidence this year. At times such varieties of cotton as Acala, Bank Account, and the Clevelands show as high as 60 percent loss of plants, while this past season practically all the varieties susceptible to wilt showed but a slight percent loss. Thirdly, weather conditions may favor one type of cotton plants one season and a different type the following season. The past two summers were especially adapted for late cotton and so such varieties as Dixie Triumph and Cook showed up unusually well.
4

In addition to the soil conditions which the grower can account for, and weather conditions which vary from year to year, careful selection of cotton seed must be considered.
In selecting cotton seed for planting the grower should consider the variety of seed best fitted for his farm and pay special attention to the source of the seed. A widespread habit of growers is the introduction of new and untried varieties or strains of cotton which have made a good showing somewhere else. Buying seed of unknown variety is almost as dangerous a process as buying gin-run seed.
Due to the large number of so-called varieties and strains of cotton now prevalent in the State, it is earnestly advised that cotton seed be obtained from some established seed firm, rather than from growers who are producing a new "variety" by selections from old ones. A new name by no means signifies an improvement.
The idea is prevalent that seed will "run out" if one variety is grown in the same locality year after year. This is partly true, but any grower can easily prevent the seed from running out by making a few selections. At picking time a mass selection may be made easily and quickly by going through the cotton fields, marking off every desirable cotton stalk by tying a bit of white cloth on the top of the cotton plant or by sticking a stake in the ground next to the plant wanted. The cotton pickers are then told to skip fl,ll the marked plants and at the end of the picking season the .selected cotton is gathered in and ginned after the gin has been thoroughly cleaned.
Though a number of growers have been able to improve their cotton seed greatly by making mass selections, it has been found that much better results can be had from individual selections. This method of selection is carried out by picking a number of the best looking plants, keeping the seed from each plant separately, and then next season, planting a row from each group of seed. By planting the seed in rows side by side the offspring of each parent stalk can be observed and selections made once more, this time, though, a selection of the best rows. These seed are planted in multiplying patches and the following year sufficient seed of good selected quality will be had to plant several acres. Subsequent tables are given as a suggestion for seed selection.
5

The cotton varieties herein described were planted April 4, 19U, using 600 pounds of 10-3-4 commercial fertilizer per acre. The Experiment Station soil consisted of sandy loam with clay sub-soil, common to the Coastal Plain region. Plots of 1-100 acre were marked off for tests with each variety, good stands were assured and the plants thinned out to hills of about 18 inch intervals, the rows 4 feet apart. Rigorous cultivation and active dusting with calcium arsenate were carried on throughout the season.
The variety designated as "Lewis 63 (B-2)" results from mass selection for heavy yield. That marked "Lewis 63 (B-3)" is the result of 1.aass selection for earliness. These selections were made !',t the Thomasville Experiment Station along with a number of individual selections and crosses, of which reports will be made in the near future.

The growing of cotton with lint measuring less thim 7-8' is not recommended. The seed of cotton with long lint, as Lightning Express, should be kept clean by avoiding crossings with short staple cotton and by taking necessary precautions in cleaning the gin out thoroughly before ginning. When it is felt to be an advantage to plant more than one variety of cotton in a community, care should be taken to select cotton of about the same lint length as, for example, an early strain of Lewis 63 and Dixie Triumph, which is a late cotton, both with lint measuring 7-8' ; or Lightning Express, an early cotton, and Deltatype Webber, both measuring about 1-3-16'.
In many localities there is no premium paid for lint length, and where this is the case it is recommended that the grower write the Georgia State Board of Entomology for the addresses of reliable cotton brokers who do pay premiums for lint lengths. Growers should become familiar with the percent lint yielded by the cotton varieties and the lint length as the yield of seed cotton in it,Belf is a poor index to the value of a variety. However, froli,l year to year there is a slight change in lint lengths in the same variety, a condition found this year when practically all the varieties showed a shorter lint length due, in all probability, to the weather conditions. When a variety is found suitable the grower should keep the seed up by selections or should buy a new supply of seed every three years.
There is really no one best variety but a number of good ones, but it is necessary to remember that the earliness of a variety and its ability to fruit continuously are the outstanding qualifications of cotton under weevil conditions. Further limitations are met with when cotton wilt is present and it is doubtlessly risky to plant any variety which is susceptible to wilt.
The varieties planted for these tests which showed wilt damage were: Acala, Addison's Prolific, Bank Account, Cleveland Straight No. 4, College No. 1 5-5-1-3-~-1-1, College No. 1 ~3-~-1. Culpepper, Delfos 681, Delphas 6102, Deltatype WebbeT, Durango 489, Fitzpatrick's Cleveland, Half and Half, Hawkin's Prolific, Hooper's Big Boll, Lightning Express, Lone Star, Lone Star 19~, 1-1/16" Cleveland, Piedmont Cleveland, Rhyne's Cook, Sikes Cleveland, Simpkin's Prolific, Steinheimer's Cleveland, Trice, Wannamaker's Cleveland, and Webber 49-101-3-3. The others appeared to be wilt resistant.
9

The reader is advised to make a careful study of Table 1, which gives the total yields of seed cotton per plot and the estimated yield of seed cotton per acre along with the percent lint realized and cotton lint yield per acre.
In yield of seed cotton Dixie Triumph led by a large margin, and ranking fourth in percent lint held the lead in yield of cotton lint. This is to be expected when wea$er conditions are favorable for late cotton as was the case this past season. With unfavorable weather conditions, a short growing season and average weevil infestation, this variety would suffer while an early variety such as Lewis 63 or Lightning Express (Table 8) would yield a leading amount of seed cotton.
Cleveland Straight No. 4, Steinheimer's Cleveland and Fitz patrick's Cleveland, all susceptible to wilt, yielded high this year in the absence of severe wilt damage. Another year with conditions favoring wilt, these varieties may be cut as high as 60 percent in cotton production.
The error of selecting a cotton for growing on the farm merely because of a high percent lint is best demonstrated by the variety, Half and Half, which ranked first in percent lint but ranked twenty-first in cotton lint yield per acre.
The small boiled wilt resistant cottons as Petty's Toole and Lewis 63, though yielding well enough this season usually grow cotton when other varieties fail altogether in bad wilt land.
Delta Pine Land No. 4 was planted l.ate and so all data for this variety concerning yield should be disregarded.
The yields of the Lone Star cottons were greatly reduced by a boll rot, Diplodia gossypia Edgerton.
