Ag Commissioner Warns of Potential Botulism Risk in Brand of Mackerel
ATLANTA Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin is cautioning Georgians to watch for a certain brand of vacuum-packed mackerel because it has the potential to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum spores, which can cause botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning.
Commissioner Irvin's advisory comes following a Food and Drug Administration announcement that Kein Import Corporation, 330 Calyer Street, Brooklyn, New York, has begun a nationwide voluntary recall.
The recalled product is Kein Import Cooked Mackerel Fish, vacuum packed, two pieces per basket (one pound), with no code. The fish are uneviscerated.
The fish should not be eaten even if it does not look or smell spoiled. Botulism can cause the following symptoms: general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing. Difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation may also be common symptoms. People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention.
Anyone who has purchased any of the mackerel should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Agriculture inspectors will be checking grocery stores and food warehouses to make sure none of the implicated product is on the shelves.
