THE COMMON HOUSE FLY
The following information is given so that all may under
stand the danger of this pest and that now is the time to
get busy and swat the fly Most of this article has been
taken from a most excellent bulletin issued by the Pood
Commissioner of Illinois
Life History
The fly lays its eggs where the conditions are best fitted
for their development These conditions are nearly ideal in
stable manure Plies also deposit their eggs in human
manure and other forms of decaying and filthy vegetable
and animal matter Under ordinary conditions the eggs
hatch into maggots the larval stage in from 8 to 24 hours
these in turn develop into the pupa or resting stage This
period requires 5 to 7 days Finally the pupae in 5 to 7 days
longer becomes fully developed flies A generation of flies
is therefore reared in from 10 to 15 days Ten to thirteen
generations in one season
The number of eggs laid by an individual fly averages
120 and four such batches may be laid by each female fly
At this rate of increase the one adult fly which we neglect
to kill in early Spring may be the cause of the existence of
many millions of flies by August This is the reason for the

It has been shown that as many as 685 maggots the
larvae of flies were present in one pound Of horse manure
At this rate there would be 450000 in a pile of 1000 pounds

Carrying Disease
That the fly is the most active disease carrier has been
proved conclusively Notice the picture of the fly in this
bulletin Note the number of hairs on its legs and body
some 12000 of them and you can readily understand how
the disease germs are so easily carried Is it any wonder
that a fly feeding as it does upon human manure and spittle
from consumptive patients carries the germs of typhoid
dysentery infantilediarrhea and tuberculosis consump

During the SpanishAmerican War flies with lime covered
feet were seen crawling over the soldiers food Lime had
been spread in the privy vaults and these flies in crawling
there had gotten this lime on their feet This lime had been
put in the privy vaults to keep down the odor and to help
prevent disease This was much better than to do nothing
at all but screening should have been used so that flies
could not get in Now what do the flies in your neighbor
hood carry Have you investigated Are you going to
allow the fly to carry the bacteria of infantilediarrhea
from the privy vaults to baby brothers food
You cannot keep the fly clean but you can prevent its
visits to some of its filthy feeding places You can kill the
fly which may have millions of offsprings You can destroy
their breeding places You can prevent their access to hu
man food

ADVICE TO PARENTS
Screening
Screen all places where food is manufactured stored or
offered for sale All food products which are eaten raw
should be particularly looked after In screening buildings
see that screens fit tightly Galvanized and copper screen
ing is cheaper in the endrn

Cleanliness
All places where food is handled should be kept conspicu
ously clean at all times The yard and alley in the rear of
many places is neglected Allow no decaying material upon
premises Garbage cans should be kept tightly closed and
ALL refuse materials should be deposited in them Wooden
garbage containers are not satisfactory as they cannot be
kept clean Sprinkle chloride of lime in the privyvault at
least twice each week Do not ATTRACT flies
Manure
Stable manure should be stored temporarily in a tight box
with a close fitting lid A small screened opening will per
mit of ventilation The manure should be hauled from the
box at least once each week and the wagon kept covered
Flies are often conveyed to flyless neighborhoods where
health officers permit the hauling of manure and garbage
uncovered
Where the amount of manure handled each day is too
large to permit the use of a box it should be sprayed daily
to kill the maggots as they develop
The following treatment has been shown to kill 98 per
cent of the maggots in 24 hours
Formula
Arsenite of Soda 4 pounds
Molasses 2 quarts
Water 50 gallons
Dissolve the arsenite of soda in the water then stir the
molasses
Spray over the manure pile using any of the common
forms of garden sprays
Arsenite of soda costs 10 to 20 cents a pound depend
ing on the quantity purchasedGEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE 7
Arsenite of Soda is an ACTIVE POISON and
must be kept out of reach of children and stock
Traps
Attempts to control flies by means of traps or similar
methods are hopeless tasks unless intelligent work is done
at their breeding places Cut off the supply first then get
busy with the swatter and trap
Fly Paper
We strongly recommend the use of the fly trap out of
doors and believe that fly papers are effective only within
screened rooms A solution of formaldehyde 1 part to 20
parts of water placed on blotting paper in saucers will
serve the place of poison fly paper
The following directions for preparing sticky fly paper
are given by Dr Crumbine of the Kansas State Board of
Health
Take two pounds of rosin and one pint of castoroil
heat together until it looks like molasses Take an ordi
nary paint brush and smear while hot on any kind of paper
an old newspaper is goodand place several about the
room A dozen of these may be made at a cost of one
cent
No family should be without the fly swatter In this day
of intelligent campaign to prevent disease the fly swatter
is one of the indispensable household articles that may be
bought for five cents at any hardware store It may be
made by splitting a little stick of wood and inserting a
small piece of wire screening 4x6 inches Remember that
a fly swatted in early spring is worth a million swatted in
August

Milk and its Products
a Milk
I Milk is the fresh clean lacteal secretion obtained by
the complete milking of one or more healthy cows prop
erly fed and kept excluding that obtained within fifteen
days before and ten days after calving and contains not
less than eight and onehalf 85 per cent of solids not
fat and not less than three and onequarter 325 per
cent of milk fat
Interpretation of Bacterial Count
Since the bacterial count varies with conditions and with
seasons it is difficult to set any reliable bacteriological
standard The following will give a general idea of how
such numbers should be interpreted
Bacteria Per Cubic Centimeter
Below 10000 indicates very good milk
Between 10000 and 50000 indicates good milk
50000 100000 fair milk
100000 500000 unsatisfactory
milk
500000 1000000 bad milk
Over 1000000 very bad milk
The bacterial count will vary with the season being
higher in summer than in winter The cause of this is the
greater difficulty of keeping milk cool in summer If care
is taken to keep it sufficiently cool the count should be no
greater in summer than in winter
b Cream
I Cream is that portion of milk rich in milk fat which
rises to the surface of milk on standing or is separated
from it by centrifugal force is fresh and clean and con
tains not less than eighteen 18 per cent of milk fat
c Ice Creams
1 Ice cream is a frozen product made from cream and

sugar with or without a natural flavoring and contains
not less than twelve 12 per cent of milk fat
2 Fruit or chocolate Ice cream is a frozen product made
from cream sugar and sound clean mature fruits and
contains not less than ten 10 per cent of milk fat
3 Nut ice cream is a frozen product made from cream
sugar and sound nonrancid nuts and contains not less
than ten 10 per cent of milk fat
The Presence of Organisms of the B Coli Aerogenes Group
of Bacteria in Milk Cream and Ice Cream
One or several members of a group of organisms known
as the B coli aerogenes group may occur in milk more
or less frequently according to the care used in its pro
duction These organisms occur normally in the feces of
all animals and can only get into the milk through careless
methods of production and handling
The chief ways in which these organisms enter the milk
are First by brushing dirt particles from the flanks of
the cow into the pail during the process of milking sec
ond the presence of much dust in the stable during milk
ing as this dust is made up to a great extent of particles of
manure third the use of sewage polluted stream or well
water to wash the utensils lastly the unclean hands of
those who handle the milk The presence of any of these
organisms in any quantity is then undesirable in milk
During the past month some thirty samples have been
tested for the presence of some member of this group The
results are as follows
13 were positive in 11000 c c of sample
26 were positive in 1100 c c of sample
46 were positive in 110 c c of sample
70 were positive in 1 c c of sample
30 were negative in the amounts testedM
