What is a hoop house? I heard a farmer say he used one to grow lettuce.
A hoop house is a greenhouse with a plastic covering wrapped over metal or PVC piping. Hoop houses are used to give extra protection for plants from extremes in temperature.
In a greenhouse such as a hoop house, solar radiation heats the interior, and the heat builds up faster than it can escape. This is called the "greenhouse effect." This extra warmth is why hoop houses are used to extend the growing season of some highvalue crops by allowing them to be planted earlier in the spring and allowing for later growth in the fall or perhaps even through the winter.
Some hoop houses also may have fans or heaters to further moderate temperatures. If hoop houses are used in the summer, they generally are covered with shade cloth to cut down on the amount of sunlight that penetrates through the plastic. The sides also may be opened up to allow heat to escape. Crops such as lettuce are generally planted directly in the ground within a hoop house.

Hendrix Produce First Gold-level Member
Of Department's Georgia Grown Program
Based in Metter, Georgia, familyowned Hendrix Produce grows Vidalia Onions and watermelons on nearly 1,000 acres. The company, part of Hendrix Farms, became the first Goldlevel member of the Georgia Grown program in February 2012.
"I joined my dad in the business in 1993 and we've worked hard to grow since
then," said Kevin Hendrix, son of Hendrix Farms founder R.E. Hendrix. "We work year round with the onion business, grow and ship watermelons in addition to onions, and have row crops, too." He added the produce business has had a packing and distribution facility, website and mail-order business "as long as I can remember."
"I heard about the Georgia Grown
program through the Georgia Fruit & Vegetable Growers Association," said Hendrix. "We joined to support the Department and Commissioner because they've supported us. He's been there for Georgia growers so we want to help grow this program."
The company has diversified over the years; it now boasts its own state-of-the-art distribution operation where the company grades, packs and distributes fresh produce to the country's largest retailers. In addition to Vidalia onions, the company has remote sources to grow and ship Peruvian onions, Mexican onions, Texas onions and Western Sweet onions around the world. They grow organic Vidalia onions on the Metter farm, which also is planted to peanuts, cotton and corn, and produce a small line of condiments. They employ between 200-300 workers year round, sourcing additional seasonal labor through the federal H2A program.
"Farming is a lot of hard work, and as a
farmer we try to be good stewards of the land," Hendrix said. "We try to grow the best, safest quality product we can grow and share that with others through our business."
Learn more about this Georgia Grown Gold sponsor at georgiagrown.com, or visit hendrixproduce.com for supply inquiries, recipes and more.
Editor's Note: The headline for the article on pick-your-own farms, published in the March 7, 2012, issue of the Bulletin may have given readers the impression that produce available at such operations is always sold at lower prices that other retail outlets. Consumers should keep in mind that these operations do provide produce that is fresher than that grown and shipped from distant locations; however, produce is not always less expensive as growers must compete with retail outlets that purchase their produce in bulk quantities. The editor regrets any confusion caused by the article.
Executive Chefs Named for 2012 Georgia Grown Program
Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black officially launched the Georgia Grown Executive Chef Program during the annual Taste of Georgia Legislative Reception held last month in Atlanta.
"We are so excited to partner with the Georgia Restaurant Association and debut this program for our state's culinary community," said Black. "The opportunity to work with these incredible chefs throughout the year will mean great things for Georgia and we look forward to showcasing the availability and uses for quality, local products throughout the cooking seasons."
The chefs participating in the inaugural 2012 program include:
- Holly Chute, Executive Chef, Georgia Governor's Mansion;
- Michael Deihl, CEC CCA AAC, Executive Chef, East Lake Golf Club;
- Kevin Gillespie, Executive Chef, Woodfire Grill Atlanta; and
- Hilary White, Executive Chef, The Hil, A Restaurant at Serenbe
"In Georgia, our restaurant industry is second only to agribusiness in the number of jobs we provide," said Georgia Restaurant Association Executive Director Karen Bremer. "That's why this partnership makes so much sense we are highlighting the quality of Georgia Grown products through the outstanding talent of these local Executive Chefs."
The program offers these chefs a mark
of honor and distinction, while increasing awareness for both restaurateurs and consumers about Georgia products. As the program continues throughout 2012, it will create a conduit for consumers to find Georgia Grown in their communities in order to support local, seasonal foods when dining out. Each chef will participate in a spring and fall school event as part of public school culinary education and school food nutrition, in terms of increased
opportunities for Georgia Grown products, training and recipe development. The chefs also will participate in an organized farm tour, at least one seasonal cooking clip with the Department and at least one Georgia Grown cooking event designated by Black.
Biographies and photos of each chef participating in the 2012 Georgia Grown Executive Chef Program can be viewed http://agr.georgia.gov/georgia-grownexecutive-chef-program.aspx.

Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week
All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to advertise in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (i.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/ permits/registrations. * Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. *The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. * Ads must be received no later than designated deadline in order to appear in the following issue. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. * Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad category headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. * There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. * Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. * Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by
telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website. Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible, on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address(es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. AG SEED FOR SALE
If you have questions regarding this category, call Shavonne Smith at 404-6519081 or 404-651-9082.
Advertisers of agricultural seed must submit a current state laboratory report (not more than 9 months old) for purity, noxious weeds and germination for each seed lot advertised. A seed lot must be uniform and not exceed 400 50-lb. bags. Laboratory reports will be returned upon request. Any ads for agricultural seed submitted for publication without this documentation will not be published. Licensed seed dealers cannot advertise seed in the Market Bulletin. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless they are grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as Florida 304, Coker 9152, Coker 9835 and soybean seed, such as Prichard and Benning, may not be propagated for sale unless the seed has been grown as a class of certified seed. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office or the Georgia Department of Agriculture Seed Division at (404) 656-5584.

Does Zoo Atlanta still accept bamboo for the pandas? I have bamboo I want to cut down.
Before you cut down your bamboo, you may want to contact Zoo Atlanta to see if they can use it. Their giant pandas, Lun Lun and Yang Yang, have vigorous appetites, dining on bamboo 10 to 16 hours a day. The pandas require a significant supply of several kinds of bamboo. The zoo is seeking donations of bamboo from private landowners. The zoo can accept only bamboo that has been harvested by their specialists in order to ensure it meets harvesting standards. To inquire about donating bamboo located on your property, please call the Bamboo Hotline at 404-624-5884 or visit the Zoo Atlanta website at www.zooatlanta.org/home/donate_bamboo.
