Well-Being of American Farms

The U.S. Department of

Media often publish lists - best dressed

celebrities, top party schools, and

bestselling books. A recent article

distributed by Yahoo News detailed what

of the majors on the list

- agriculture, animal

horticulture - are only

as useless as your next

While it may be

Our guest columnist this issue is J. Scott Angle, Ph. D., dean and director of the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

As dean of the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, I can say with certainty, this Top 5 list is dead wrong in our state.
Agriculture not only shouldn't be on the list of most useless majors, it is actually at or near the top of the heap of good opportunity.
Even at the height of the current recession in 2009, fewer CAES students were still looking for jobs as they received their diplomas than those from other UGA colleges and schools. A UGA Career Center survey showed that less than six percent of CAES graduates said they were still seeking employment, compared to numbers as high as 31 percent in other UGA colleges. The median percentage of university students still seeking employment at graduation was 13.46 percent among the 12 colleges.
A recent study from the UGA Center for (Continued on Page 10)

Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will spend the next several months contacting farmers and ranchers across the nation to conduct the Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS). The results of this survey will serve as a baseline for numerous federal policies and programs that affect U.S. farms and farm families.
"ARMS is our primary tool for gauging the financial condition and production practices on American farms and ranches," said Douglas Kleweno, director of the NASS Georgia Field Office. "By participating in this survey, Georgia farmers directly impact the decisions that affect them, their families and their operations."
NASS conducts ARMS jointly with USDA's Economic Research Service. In an effort to obtain the most accurate

Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week

All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to advertise in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (i.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/ permits/registrations. * Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. *The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. * Ads must be received no later than designated deadline in order to appear in the following issue. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. * Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad category headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. * There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. * Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. * Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by

telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website. Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible, on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address(es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. In 2011, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) replaced the food guide pyramid with the GMyPlate initiative (see picture below),

aimed at encouraging everyone to make at least half of their plate fruits

and vegetables. The USDA states in their Dietary Guidelines

Consumer Brochure, "Build a healthy plate! Before you eat, think

about what goes on your plate or in your cup or bowl. Foods like

vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy products and lean

protein foods contain the nutrients you need without too many

tool and app called savy tool aids in

tracking--a personalized nutrition and physical activity plan, how

your foods and physical activity stack up, as well as offers tips and

support to help you make healthier choices and plan ahead.

Georgia ranks among the top states for a variety of fruits and

vegetables produced in the U.S. What better way than to receive your

daily intake of vitamins and nutrients by eating vegetables and fruits

grown right here in Georgia? Georgia Grown produce for the winter

months include greens like turnip and mustard, as well as carrots. Try

incorporating your greens into a risotto, wild rice mixture or soup.

Consider that carrots are not only for dipping in ranch

dressing or hummus, try

tossing them in some extra

virgin olive oil with fresh

herbs and then roasting them

as a healthy side dish.

Fruit and vegetable production, plus increased

variety of these products in Georgia will continue to

grow as we approach the

summer months. Use the

fresh, seasonal produce

available each month to motivate and spark creativity with what you include on your plate. In

In 2012, instead of wasting time counting all your modern day fad diet "don'ts," focus on all of t+he new items you can add to your food

regimen each month by adding more locally grown produce to your

All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within past 12 months. Negative reports are valid for 12 months from the sample date. A copy of this test report must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) cannot be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing any equine. Any falsification of Coggins tests can result in fines and/or suspension of advertising privileges in the Market Bulletin. This regulation also applies to equine advertised in the "At Stud" and "Boarding" categories of the quarterly equine editions.

Any person engaged in buying live poultry of any kind for resale, or in selling live poultry of any kind bought for the purpose of resale, must be licensed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Possessing such a license does not by itself disqualify an individual from advertising poultry in the Market Bulletin; however, advertisers should note that all livestock (which includes poultry), must have been in possession of the advertiser for a minimum of 90 days or, in the case of chicks, ducklings, etc., must have been raised by the advertiser before offering them for sale in the Market Bulletin. Mallard ducks must be at least three generations from the wild before they can be advertised in the Market Bulletin. Advertisers must include this information in notices submitted for publication.

How to Submit
A Seed Sample
For Testing
Farmers should adhere to the following steps in order to have seed tested at a state seed laboratory:
1. Send between one to two pounds of any large seed, such as soybeans, peanuts or corn, and about one-half to one-quarter pound, depending on seed size, of smaller seed.
2. Include the kind and variety, lot number or other identifying mark, along with your full name, address and telephone number. For greater efficiency in receiving your laboratory report, please include your e-mail address.
3. Mail seed samples in a cardboard box or similar container to protect them.
4. Allow 2-4 weeks for testing to be completed, depending on seed kind.
5. Farmers/consumers should send seed to: Georgia Department of Agriculture Tifton Laboratory Building, P.O. Box 1507, 3150 Hwy. 41 South, Tifton, GA 31793.
If you have any questions regarding seed testing, call (229) 386-3145 (Tifton). Information also is available on the Georgia Department of Agriculture website: www.agr.georgia.gov. Once you access the site, click on the option Divisions, and then click on Plant Industry. From the options displayed, select Seed Fertilizer & Feed, and then click on Seed Regulations and Testing.
Those individuals desiring to advertise agricultural seed for sale through the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin are advised to check the guidelines under the category heading Ag Seed for Sale before submitting their advertisements for publication.

AG SEED FOR SALE
If you have questions regarding this category, call Shavonne Smith at 404-6519081 or 404-651-9082.
Advertisers of agricultural seed must submit a current state laboratory report (not more than 9 months old) for purity, noxious weeds and germination for each seed lot advertised. A seed lot must be uniform and not exceed 400 50-lb. bags. Laboratory reports will be returned upon request. Any ads for agricultural seed submitted for publication without this documentation will not be published. Licensed seed dealers cannot advertise seed in the Market Bulletin. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless they are grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as Florida 304, Coker 9152, Coker 9835 and soybean seed, such as Prichard and Benning, may not be propagated for sale unless the seed has been grown as a class of certified seed. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office or the Georgia Department of Agriculture Seed Division at (404) 656-5584.

U.S. policy changes precipitated by a growing need to provide an abundant and safe world food supply and to increase economic opportunity in developing countries will continue to escalate opportunities for students pursuing careers in agriculture. Meeting that demand for food, fiber and fuel will help our students leave a lasting legacy in the world that stretches far beyond the dinner table.

New Cooking Competition

(Continued from Page 1)

Agribusiness and Economic Development showed that through 2016 there will be twice as many agricultural jobs available for college-educated workers in Georgia as students graduating from all Georgia colleges in agriculture-related programs to fill them.
As chair of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities' Board on Agriculture, I can tell you this situation is not unique in Georgia. A study from Purdue University drew a similar picture of agriculture colleges across the nation. (http://www.ag.purdue.edu/usda/employm ent/pages/default.aspx) Another study from Georgetown University had the same findings. (http://stateimpact.npr.org/ohio/ 2012/01/05/best-college-majors-if-youwant-to-find-a-job/#study)
Many sources say with relative certainty that world population growth will demand

register with the Commissioner of Agriculture. According to the Rules of the "Vidalia Onion Act of 1986", handling requirements specify that all Vidalia onions be initially packed only in the Vidalia Onion Production Area and that no Vidalia onions may be shipped from that area in bulk except as may be authorized by the rules. All Vidalia onions offered for sale also must meet specific grade and size requirements. For more information or registration forms, contact the Georgia Department of Agriculture, P.O. Box 2456, Vidalia, GA 30475, e-mail: Jason.Deal@agr.georgia.gov, phone: 912-293-2670, fax: 912-537-7082.

food production double by 2050. How we meet that demand on the same limited acres for agricultural production will largely be answered in the classrooms, research facilities and Cooperative Extension programs at American landgrant universities.
Keeping these vital programs moving at the necessary pace against the currents of dwindling budgets will continue to be a challenge. I am confident we, and our colleagues across the country, are up to the challenge. For the more than 25,000 people in our world who die from malnutrition every day, our success is a matter of life and death.
The most important variables in that equation are recruiting, educating and training a strong agricultural workforce to fuel the industry and attract more agribusiness to Georgia. We continue to draw the brightest minds from across the state, nation and world. We want to make sure those incoming students know about the opportunities available in agriculture.
Their commitment to the science of producing food for a fast-growing world is an admirable goal, and can be a lucrative goal as well.
Contrary to the claims in the Yahoo News list, our students entering the workforce find financial rewards in agriculture. At UGA, our graduates' starting salaries, including bonuses, are second among all UGA colleges behind only the College of Business. The same can be found at numerous schools across the country.
During this recession, agriculture proved to be more stable than most industries. That is generally the case because we produce the only goods consumed by 100 percent of the world's

"We're excited about the professional cooking element that the Golden Onion competition adds to the Vidalia Onion Festival," says Ingrid M. data, the federal agencies will reach out to nearly 35,000 producers nationwide, including 1,700 in Georgia, between February 1 and March 30. The survey asks the producers to provide data on their operating expenditures, production costs and household characteristics.
"Decision makers from all facets of U.S. agriculture will use the collective information from ARMS to answer questions and make important decisions concerning the economic viability of American agriculture, the rural economy and other emerging issues," explained Kleweno. "That's why it is imperative for all farmers contacted by NASS to provide responses and help shape the future of U.S. agriculture."
As with all NASS surveys, information provided by respondents is confidential by law. NASS safeguards the confidentiality of all responses, ensuring no individual respondent or operation can be identified.
The economic data gathered in ARMS will be published in the annual Farm Production Expenditures report on August 2, 2012. All NASS reports are available online at www.nass.usda.gov.

Printed booklets featuring all of the competitors' recipes will be available for purchase for $10 at the competition and at the 35th Annual Vidalia Onion Festival April 26-29 in Vidalia, Ga.
The Golden Onion competition is presented by the Vidalia Onion Festival Committee in cooperation with the Vidalia Onion Committee, Georgia Department of Economic Development, and the Georgia Restaurant Association. It was conceived by Atlanta-based freelance food and travel writer/editor Hope S. Philbrick who will serve as one of five judges.
The Golden Onion competition will be held at the Vidalia Community Center, 107 Old Airport Road in Vidalia, Ga. The event is open to the public starting at 12:30 p.m. Advance tickets cost $5 per person or $10 at the door. For details, visit www.vidaliaonionfestival.com.

National FFA to Provide

UGA Seeks Nominations

Recommendations for New Farm Bill

For Ag Hall of Fame

With more than 100,000 new farmers needed over the next few years, Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack issued the young leaders of the National FFA Organization a challenge in 2011. "I would like you, with your fellow students and the adult leadership of the organization, to develop a series of recommendations around the upcoming Farm Bill that will encourage more young people to pursue careers in farming," Vilsack said.
It was a challenge that the national FFA officer team for 2010-11 took seriously. The students immediately began work- framing key questions, consulting FFA members, engaging leaders in agriculture, compiling input and formulating recommendations.
"Never before had we been invited to submit direct input to the Secretary of Agriculture that could enhance the ability of agricultural education and FFA to help students succeed and strengthen American agriculture," said Riley Pagett, national FFA President, 2010-11. "We were honored to be invited to be a part of this process."
In December 2011, the 2010-11 national officer team met with Sec. Vilsack to share their recommendations which fell under four main categories:

creating vibrant rural communities; who should care about agriculture and why; planning for the future.
Items that were recommended were as follows: USDA and other agencies should encourage and assist beginning farmers to start or continue in production agriculture; USDA should help transition farms from older related and non-related farmers to younger or beginner farmers who may not come from a farm; USDA should help keep young people in rural communities and make rural communities an even more important part of our nation's economy and society; USDA should support efforts to increase the public's knowledge of agricultural literacy; USDA should strengthen the capacity of agricultural education to produce more students that pursue production agriculture and other agriculturally related careers and the USDA should provide authority, responsibility and support for schoolbased agricultural education and FFA.
"We believe it is in the best interest of

Each year the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Alumni Association seeks to recognize agricultural leaders in Georgia. The CAES Alumni Association currently is seeking nominations for its most distinguished award.
The Georgia Agricultural Hall of Fame pays tribute to agricultural leaders who have made extraordinary contributions to agriculture and agribusiness industries in Georgia. This program is designed to give appropriate recognition to those who have made significant achievements in agriculture, agribusiness industries, and the service institutions. The recipient may be retired or active, man or woman, living or deceased. Hall of Fame nominations must be postmarked by March 15, 2012.
If you know an individual deserving recognition for his or her outstanding contributions to agriculture, the CAES Alumni Association invites you to make a nomination for this prestigious honor. Recipients will be honored in Athens Friday, September 14, 2012.
To obtain guidelines and nomination form, visit www.caes.uga.edu/alumni or contact the CAES Alumni Office at (706) 542-3390.

Is there any truth to the five-second rule? I also have heard it called the threesecond rule. The "rule" is that if you pick up a dropped food within five or three seconds, it is safe to eat. My boyfriend and his friends said it several times during the last Super Bowl.
Time is not the issue; the cleanliness of the surface is the main factor for whether a dropped food item may become contaminated. Disease-causing bacteria can live for a long time on wood, tile, concrete, carpet, rugs and other surfaces where people walk, pets sleep, insects crawl and dust accumulates. If these bacteria are on the floor they can immediately begin to contaminate a dropped food item. Other factors to consider include the characteristics of the food and whether it is going to be thoroughly cooked.

The Chinese water chestnut (Eleocharis dulcis) is not a nut; it is a corm - an underground bulb-like structure of a type of water plant. It is safe for someone who is allergic to tree nuts. The seeds of two other water plants (Trapa natans and Trapa bicornis) are sometimes called water chestnuts. They, too, should not pose a problem to someone with a tree nut allergy. These also go by the names "water caltrop" or "trapa nut."

Are there any dwarf pecan trees? Are there any that will be suitable for a small condo garden?
Pecan trees regularly grow 70 to 100 feet tall and can reach 150 feet tall. They have a spread of 40 to 75 feet or more. Even smaller varieties are still considered large trees from a landscaping perspective.

dogwoods in Georgia. Select a welldrained location in partial shade and do not plant too deeply. Dogwoods need partial shade to develop graceful, tiered branches. Dogwoods grown in full sun will flower well, but they can become stressed and possibly die during a long, hot, dry summer. Be sure to use mulch around the planted trees and keep them watered during dry periods.

Pigweed has been controlled effectively for some years through the use of the herbicide, glyphosate; however, glyphosate-resistant pigweed has become established and spread throughout southern Georgia. The weed's rapid growth rate, extensive rooting structure, high seed production, physical seed movement (via man, animals, water), and by pollen (wind) dispersal have all contributed to its rapid spread.

After this discovery, Dr. Culpepper developed recommended practices and guidance for farmers to use in the control of this pervasive weed.
