Thomas Rodgers of Athens, Ga., recently was inducted into the National 4-H Hall of Fame at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center in Chevy Chase, Md.
For 14 years, Rodgers was director of the state's 4-H program leaving the position in 1993 to become director of county operations for the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service.
During those years, he worked to bolster educational programs at Rock Eagle and improve the physical facilities of the campground.
In 1979, he helped establish an environmental education program at Rock Eagle, and in the mid-1980s he helped raise more than $2 million needed to upgrade the facility.
Rodgers grew up in Evans outside Augusta and became interested in agriculture through participating in 4-H livestock events in high school. He went to Athens in 1963 to attend the University of Georgia, and then made the city his home, raising two sons there with his wife, Janie.
Rodgers was nominated to the 4-H Hall of Fame by Arch Smith, the current state 4-H director.

New Business Development Office Established

To Help Sell Georgia Ag Products, Create Jobs

Farmers and new agribusinesses often have products or services they want to sell, but they do not know where to go for assistance with marketing and promotion. Recognizing the need for a resource to help such producers and agricultural companies, Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black established an office of Business Development in September 2011.
This unit of the Department's Marketing Division also contains the offices of International Trade and Agritourism.

As part of this new function and to better manage resources and save taxpayer funds, the Department recently closed its International Trade office in Brussels, Belgium. "I want to assure those interested in marketing their products and services outside our state that our International Trade office in Atlanta will continue to work with SUSTA (Southern United States Trade Association) and other sources to introduce and market Georgia agricultural products," said Commissioner Black. "The Georgia Department of Economic Development already has 10 offices throughout our state where we can direct farmers and companies to those professionals that can assist them. It just makes good sense to utilize these existing resources rather than duplicating these services." In addition, the Department will work with sources such as the Center of Innovation for Agribusiness in Tifton, Ga., and the University of Georgia Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development in Athens, Ga., to help farmers and companies obtain the information and resources they need.
Black explained that the Department's (Continued on Page 8)

George Washington Carver Focus of Carter Museum Exhibit

One of America's greatest agricultural scientists, George Washington Carver, is the subject of an exhibit at the Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta through May 27. The exhibition, created by The Field Museum, Chicago, in collaboration with Tuskegee University and the National Park Service, is the largest and most comprehensive traveling exhibition ever created about Carver.
Though Carver has long been a celebrated figure in African American history and the world of science, he has special relevance today amid concerns about climate change and energy resources. His teachings promoted the use of agricultural products over fossil fuels and he was a proponent of sustainability. Carver's experiments with plants laid the groundwork for today's research on plantbased fuels, medicines, and everyday products. Although he perhaps is best known for the products he developed from peanuts, he also created a number of products from sweet potatoes and many other plants.
Visitors to the exhibit will be able to view such important artifacts as Carver's: field notes, correspondence, and artwork; laboratory equipment, peanut specimens, and plant-based paints; portraits and photographs; personal objects, such as

spectacles, clothing, and diplomas; and teaching materials, pamphlets, and insect and soil specimens.
Interactive displays include a life-size, touchable replica of a Jesup wagon used as

a moving classroom throughout the South, and Carver's own voice describing his work as a "cook-stove chemist."
Attendees also can see video interviews (Continued on Page 8)

Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black and Nathan McClure, Chief Forester, Georgia Forestry Commission, met recently with Mr. Georg Schirmbeck of the German Parliament and his delegation. Together, they discussed renewable energies and job opportunities between Germany and the U.S. relating to agriculture and forestry. These two sectors are major components of Georgia's economy and, as Commissioner Black said during the meeting, "From a trade and export perspective, my goal in Georgia for food and fiber, agriculture and forestry, is to be viewed as a preferred customer...I want us to work and build things together." All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within past 12 months. Negative reports are valid for 12 months from the sample date. A copy of this test report must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) cannot be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing any equine. Any falsification of Coggins tests can result in fines and/or suspension of advertising privileges in the Market Bulletin. Any person engaged in buying live poultry of any kind for resale, or in selling live poultry of any kind bought for the purpose of resale, must be licensed by the Georgia department of Agriculture. Possessing such a license does not by itself disqualify an individual from advertising poultry in the Market Bulletin; however, advertisers should note that all livestock (which includes poultry), must have been in possession of the advertiser for a minimum of 90 days or, in the case of chicks, ducklings, etc., must have been raised by the advertiser before offering them for sale in the Market Bulletin. Advertisers of agricultural seed must submit a current state laboratory report (not more than 9 months old) for purity, noxious weeds and germination for each seed lot advertised. A seed lot must be uniform and not exceed 400 50-lb. bags. Laboratory reports will be returned upon request. Any ads for agricultural seed submitted for publication without this documentation will not be published. Licensed seed dealers cannot advertise seed in the Market Bulletin. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless they are grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as Florida 304, Coker 9152, Coker 9835 and soybean seed, such as Prichard and Benning, may not be propagated for sale unless the seed has been grown as a class of certified seed. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office or the Georgia department of Agriculture Seed division at (404) 656-5584.
