Lane Southern Orchards Pioneers Agritourism
Monitors Ham Curing
Mail to: Published by the Ga. Department of Agriculture Gary Black, Commissioner
Lane Southern Orchards, near Fort Valley in the heart of middle Georgia, has been growing peaches, pecans and other good things to eat for more than 100 years.
Begun in 1908 by the late John David Duke, this Georgia Grown Gold Member is much more than a farm with a roadside market, said David Lane, who has spent 35 years with the family business begun by his great-grandfather. The farm now encompasses 5,000 acres planted with 300,000 peach trees, 35,000 pecan trees and other crops, and its retail operations include a store and a restaurant.
"We were doing the agritourism thing before there was a word for it," said Lane, describing how his family branched out into activities that attract non-farm folk from nearby Macon, Warner Robins and other cities.
"If you're a farmer, you can do everything right, and if Mother Nature doesn't cooperate ... you have to diversify," said Lane. "We just kept adding events. When we did something and it worked, we kept on doing it."
Today, Lane Southern Orchards is a

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week
All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to place classified advertisements in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (I.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/permits/registrations. Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. Ads must be received no later than designated deadline in order to appear in the following issue. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad category headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website. Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible,
on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address (es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. Send ads to:

This course will provide landowners with an awareness of options for managing their lands for a variety of natural resources. It's intended to be a pre-cursor to the Master Wildlifer, Master Tree Farmer, Master Naturalist, and the Natural Resources Enterprises program workshops planned in the future.

"I commend Georgia Environmental Protection Division Director Jud Turner for his leadership on this issue, and the director and I will continue to work with the EPA in the event of an ongoing shortage."
Members of the Georgia Petroleum Council predicted shortages of the cleaner burning, low volatility gasoline would occur within a week without relief from the requirements. Federal regulations require all Georgia counties to use low volatility fuel in the summertime, and require an even more stringent standard in a 45county region around Atlanta. Georgia will continue to monitor gasoline supplies and request an extension if it is determined the petroleum industry needs additional time to recover.
If any Georgia residents or visitors passing through encounter an issue with gasoline purchased from a gas station here in Georgia, please contact the Georgia

300,000 trees must be pruned by hand, but the work doesn't end there. In the spring, after the fruit appears, approximately 90 percent of the immature peaches must be picked and discarded so the ones left on the branches grow bigger--another task that must be done by hand. Then throughout the summer, the peaches must be picked, packed and shipped. Lane Southern Orchards nurtures 30 varieties of peaches that ripen at different times so that the farm always has fruit to ship to its commercial customers.
The Lane family currently co-owns the farm with Sid and Rusty Banack of Vero Beach, Fla., and fourth- and fifthgeneration Lanes are still active in the company's farm and retail operations.
Lane and his kin have not forgotten their roots, even as Lane Southern Orchards continues to embrace modern farming and business techniques. Lane laughs as he recalls the days when they paid employees in cash from the pickup truck window. Lane Southern Orchards will soon handle its payroll by direct deposit and debit cards.

Risk Management Focus Of Cattle, Forage Workshop
Cattle and forage producers in Southeast Georgia are invited to attend a workshop that is designed to help them manage the price and production risks that they face.
The University of Georgia and Fort Valley State University are collaborating to deliver a series of these programs around the state. The first meeting will be held at the Bulloch County Extension Office Thursday, September 27 from 2 to 5 p.m.
This educational program will provide information on: livestock and forage insurance products for producers; cattle weaning and winter feeding strategies; and fall, winter and warm season forage considerations.
In addition, participants will use the FVSU mobile classroom to get hands-on training on using UGA livestock budgets and computer decision-aids. For more information or to register, contact Carole
Knight in the Bulloch County Office at 912-871-6130 or clh@uga.edu. The office is located at 151 Langston Chapel Road, Bulloch Center for Agriculture, Suite 600, Statesboro, Ga. 30458.

If you do not care for the taste or texture of the skin, it is easily peeled away. When a fig is very ripe, you may be able to pull the skin away from one side of a fig starting at the stem end similar to the way you peel a banana. You then eat the exposed flesh. The ease with which the skin separates from the flesh can vary with ripeness and the variety of the fig. A paring knife or other sharp knife is all that is needed to slice or cut away the skin of a fig if you are taking that route. Practice makes perfect! If you feel clumsy, just keep at it. Fresh figs are healthy and delicious. However you choose to eat them is fine.
Because of their short shelf life, you may not see many figs at supermarkets, but can find locally grown figs at farmers' markets, especially in late summer. Figs are easy to grow in a home garden setting. Georgia nurseries offer numerous varieties. Try growing them yourself.

Georgians Can Eat Right When Dining Out
Whether for a change of scenery, a chance to celebrate, an excuse to avoid doing the dishes or travelling on a vacation, dining away from home has become a national pastime. Whatever the occasion, if you are on a diet or trying to limit your fat intake, feel confident you can stick to your particular eating regimen.
Although following a low-fat diet at home seems easier than when eating out, it's possible to eat right while enjoying a delicious meal in many restaurants. Just looking around, you'll find that tasty, trendy and nutritious foods are popping up everywhere. Once you recognize foods that are naturally high in fat and calories, you can begin to make better choices. Here are some tips for dining out:
Interpreting the Menu.
* Terms for low-fat preparation include: steamed, garden fresh, in its own juice, poached, broiled and roasted
* Some low-fat, low-cholesterol foods are high in sodium. Watch out for foods that are pickled, smoked, in a cocktail sauce, in broth, or in a tomato base.
* Menu descriptions that warn of saturated fat and cholesterol also may indicate high sodium. Avoid choosing food described as buttery, buttered, sauteed, fried, crispy, braised, creamed, in its own gravy, au gratin, parmesan, escalloped, marinated (in oil), stewed, basted. Also, beware of casserole, hash, or pot pie.
What to Choose From the Menu.
Appetizers -- Choose fresh fruit, juice, seafood cocktail or clear soups; go easy on pates, cream soups, chips and dip,
breaded, and fried items. Salads -- Choose tossed lettuce with
vegetables served with dressing on the side; go easy on gelatins, salads served with croutons, meat, eggs, nuts, and seeds.
Meat, Fish and Poultry -- Choose roasted, baked, broiled or poached without fat or skin; go easy on glazed, breaded, fried, au gratin, or in cream sauce.
Potatoes and Substitutes -- Choose baked, boiled, or steamed potatoes, rice, or noodles, prepared without fat; go easy on fried or escalloped with gravies, or sauces.
Breads -- Choose plain bread or toast, rolls, crackers, bagels, melba toast, bread sticks; go easy on sweet rolls, coffee cake, fruit muffins, glazed breads and biscuits.
Desserts -- Choose fresh fruit, low-fat frozen yogurt, angel food cake; go easy on pies, cakes, pastries, sweetened fruits, and ice cream.
Beverages -- Choose water with lemon, tea, diet soda, skim milk; go easy on chocolate milk, milk shakes, regular soda, dessert coffees, and limit alcoholic beverages.

four to six weeks you should see the benefits of your renovation project in a fuller, healthier fescue lawn.

For example, wheat seed such as Florida 304, Coker 9152, Coker 9835 and soybean seed, such as Prichard and Benning, may not be propagated for sale unless the seed has been grown as a class of certified seed. 2013 Ag Forecast
The University of Georgia Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development recently announced the date and locations of the 2013 Farm to Port Ag Forecast.
The forecast will celebrate the growing export market for Georgia's produce and the international impact of Georgia agriculture.
The university's College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Georgia Farm Bureau and the Georgia Department of Agriculture have sponsored the annual seminar series for the last several years. The six half-day programs bring together agricultural economists and economic development experts from around the state to give producers and business owners a preview of what they can expect from the market in the coming year.
"The main objective of the Ag Forecast is to provide Georgia's producers and agribusiness leaders with information on where we think the industry is headed in the upcoming year to help them plan more effectively" said Kent Wolfe, director of the Center of Agribusiness and Economic Development.
Economists from The Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development and The Department of Agriculture and Applied Economics will be delivering the forecasts.
In addition to the annual Ag Forecast, economists will discuss the growing export market for Georgia's agricultural products and the potential for Georgia agriculture. The export session will include producers and agribusinesses from across the state who will share their stories of how they were able to access overseas markets.
The Farm to Port Ag Forecast will be held January 25 in Athens, January 28 in Rome, January 29 in Macon, January 30 in Tifton, January 31 in Bainbridge and February 1 in Lyons.
Registration will open Nov. 1, but those interested in attending may want to mark

Plant Bulbs, Perennials
In Fall for Spring Show
If you're looking forward to having bulbs and perennials next spring, you need to plant them in the fall, according to the University of Georgia Extension Service.
If these plants are put in the ground in early spring, they will grow a little bit, and try to bloom, but they will show better if they had all fall and winter to grow a root system.
For trees such as dogwood and magnolias, fall planting is preferred, although early spring planting is acceptable. Crape myrtles bloom on new growth so getting the trees established for summer blooming makes fall planting essential.
Extension Service advises planting broadleaf evergreens, such as magnolia, hollies and azaleas, in early fall because the warm soil at that time allows development of a root system.
Good soil is the key to planting, whatever you decide. The soil, however, must be in good shape with plenty of organic matter and you also need to mulch them to help protect them from cold. Mulch is good insulation, and it's needed to help the root systems grow and protect them from the cold.
THE MARKET BULLETIN
ag consumer line...
Do I need a license to sell honey from my hive at a farmers' market? Georgia beekeepers are not required to obtain a Food Sales Establishment License if they process and retail their own honey on their own premises, on a door-to-door retail route, or at an established place of business owned and managed by the producer and the honey is sold directly to a household consumer as the end user. This includes selling directly to consumers at fairs, festivals and farmers' markets. If you want to sell to a grocery store chain, you will need to be licensed. For more information, contact our Food Safety Division at 404-656-3627.
*** Will red okra keep its color when cooked? I know purple snap beans will turn green. Red okra will also turn green when cooked. You can enjoy its color by slicing it crosswise and using it raw in salads with tomatoes, Vidalia onions, sweet peppers and other vegetables.
*** Do figs need to be peeled? It depends on your preference and how you are using the figs. Some jam recipes, for example, may specify peeling. The skin is kept on for roasting or for hors d'oeuvres such as figs wrapped with prosciutto or bacon or stuffed with cream cheese or goat cheese. For fresh eating, most people eat the entire fig, often while standing next to their own fig bush or tree.

GAC Gearing Up for 2012 Harvest Celebration
The Georgia Agribusiness Council will host its annual Harvest Celebration event on Friday, November 16 at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta. This year's event will feature a silent auction and Field of Dreams reception, dinner and entertainment by country music artist John Michael Montgomery.
Montgomery has sold 16 million albums and has recorded 15 number one hits, including "I Swear," "I Love the Way You Love Me" and "I Can Love You Like That". Tickets to this event are still available.
Businesses can still buy individual tickets or a table with 10 reserved seats. Gold Tables are sold out.
Each year, the silent auction and Field of Dreams events provide items for guests to bid on or win by purchasing a
Field of Dreams ticket book. The Council is asking its industry friends to consider donating items or providing monetary support for this effort.
The Council recognizes GAC member Platinum Sponsors for this year's event: AT&T, Columbia Farms, DuPont, FPL Food, Georgia Crop Improvement Association/Georgia Seed Development Commission, Monsanto, Newton Crouch, Pennington Seed, Syngenta and Wells Fargo.
Tickets can be ordered or a monetary donation to the silent auction and Field of Dreams can be completed online by visiting the GAC website at www.gaagribusiness.org. For more information about the 2012 GAC Harvest Celebration, contact Christy Page at cpage@gaagribusiness.org or 800-726-2474.

served in Georgia schools, while providing more farm to cafeteria opportunities. The end result will be healthier Georgia students, decreased barriers in farm to school efforts and increased awareness as students learn and experience, both educationally and nutritionally, where their food comes from.
"This is about students learning where their food comes from; how it is grown here in Georgia and can come to its final destination in a school cafeteria," Commissioner Black continued. "It is about offering fresh, healthy foods that tie in our state's commodities and raise awareness about nutrition."
During the 2011-2012 school year, more than 1,600 students from Bleckley County Elementary, Wauka Mountain Elementary (Hall County) and Norman Park Elementary (Colquitt County) schools were directly involved. During each county's week-long program, more than 7,500 school lunches were served with 34 school gardens involved, 700 students went on farm field trips and agriculture literature was distributed to school classrooms and libraries.
"Not only did all our schools last year meet the educational requirements set forth in the program's outline, but each saw an increase in agriculture awareness," Black said. "Additionally, the new growerdistributor and grower-school relationships that have been forged will continue to be fostered with existing and new school districts as the program grows each year.
"Additionally, this program is helping revitalize agriculture education on a state level," Black continued. "These weeklong, ag-focused programs are making locally grown, healthful food options more recognizable among our young students while helping school districts move toward more clarity and training for nutritional directors. We look forward to the new and exciting things this year's program will bring."
In addition to new school systems participating in the program this year, the
Notice to Farmers
Any Georgia farmer claiming to have unpaid accounts for agricultural products sold in the last (6) months to Georgia Vegetable Co, Inc. of Tifton, Georgia, should immediately contact: Georgia Department of Agriculture, Bonding, Rm. 328 Agriculture Building, Capitol Square, Atlanta, Georgia 30334; (404) 656-3725.
GDA plans to continue working with first year participants for the next three years. During this time, last year's participating counties will continue building their farmto-school approaches, illustrating sustainable farm to cafeteria efforts while continuing to identify needs and best practices. Bleckley, Hall and Colquitt county school systems are planning to all participate in "National Farm to School Month" in October and starting in the spring, will once again highlight Georgia Grown products both in the classroom and cafeteria.
Melanie Harris, Nutritional Outreach Coordinator who oversees the program at the GDA, said the pilot program during the 2011-2012 school year was just the start. The program will only continue to get bigger and better as new school districts are introduced and the GDA is looking forward to the future years featuring 100 percent all Georgia Grown foods.
"We are sending applications to every school district here in Georgia; if you want to see your local school system involved, we'd encourage you to reach out to your county superintendent and school nutrition director," Harris said. "All of Georgia's school systems are eligible to apply and farmers and producers should be on the lookout for details to get involved with the program later this year."
School districts will be receiving applications this month and will be notified at the end of October about final selections. To learn more about the program, please visit www.agr.georgia.gov/feed-myschool-for-a-week.aspx.

their calendars now. While agriculture makes up a large part
of their economies, Lyons and Bainbridge have never hosted the Ag Forecast before, and it's been several years since Rome or Athens have hosted the event.
"We are excited to host the Ag Forecast in Lyons," said Cheryl A. Poppel, Toombs County Extension coordinator. "Several of our producers have attended the event in Statesboro and we hope the local event will bring more producers from our area."
Mitchell May, Extension coordinator in Decatur County, said that hosting the forecast will help attract a local audience, but added that people were likely to show up for this year's forecast anyway.
for hams to assure safety and wholesomeness. Inspectors also assure that salt content, water activity, and records are properly maintained on each lot of hams.
The Department also determines if labeling requirements are being met. For example, hams designated as "country ham," "country-style ham," or "dry-cured ham" must be rubbed with curing agents and cannot be injected with or placed in curing solutions.
For "quick-cure" or "moist-cure" hams, the majority of commercial producers use a pumping machine to inject a curing solution evenly throughout the product. The cure usually consists of five main ingredients: water, salt, sodium phosphate, sodium erythorbate and sodium nitrite. These components work together to help prevent food-borne illness and to improve and preserve the ham's color, flavor and texture.
When inspecting these hams, Department personnel verify the cure ingredients, ratios and amount of restricted ingredients injected into the meat. Complete records of the weight of each ham are kept at each stage of the process to verify product classification and label requirements. Hams are identified by lot number, and the date of each step of the process is recorded.
After the brine solution is injected, some processors "massage" or tumble the hams to distribute the solution. Tumbling several hams together in a saline solution also causes the myosin, a muscle protein, to migrate to the outside of the hams, thus preventing the loss of moisture and flavor during the smoking process.
The type of processing technique used determines the labeling of the ham. For

Fall Is Time to Rescue Your Fescue
Many view fall as the time to pack up the lawn mower and give the lawn a rest. Fall is actually the best time to evaluate cool-season grasses, like tall fescue, that have just experienced high, summer temperatures, according to the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service.
Take a walk around your lawn. How happy are you with your grass? Are there bare spots? How much of a problem were weeds this summer? And most importantly, how much time and money are you willing to put towards improving your lawn?
If you find yourself ready to make improvements, it might be time for a tall fescue rescue. The period between midSeptember through mid-October is the perfect time for this project. You can plant tall fescue into November, but you will probably have better results earlier in the fall.
The first step in any lawn renovation is to get a soil test. Your local Extension office provides this service for a small fee. The information provided in a soil test report is well worth that investment. You will receive a profile of your soil fertility along with recommendations on how to improve it.
While you wait for the soil test results, remove as many weeds as possible. You may be able to do this by hand. It's important to remove as many of the roots as possible. If you choose to use a selective herbicide, read the label carefully and understand what the product does. Be aware of any residual activity and plant-back restrictions. You do not want to put seed on an area where the herbicide may prevent germination.
Next, prepare to plant the seed. Mow the grass low, to about 1.5 to 2 inches. Bag the clippings to get them off the lawn. Use a lawn rake to remove any dead grass or debris lying on the grass. The low mowing height and aggressive raking may cause the lawn to look bad, but the goal is to allow the grass seeds to reach the soil.
Now aerate the grass. Aerating
removes plugs of soil, opening air holes. It allows air and water to get to the roots of the grass more readily and gives roots some room to spread out.
The plugs, or cores, will disappear after a couple of mowings or rains.
A lawn service can aerate the lawn for you. If you prefer to do it yourself, aerators are available for rent at rental equipment centers and hardware stores.
Choose seed carefully and become an avid bag reader. Look for the blue tag on the seed bag. This indicates that the seed is certified and ensures the seed is pure and free of noxious weeds.
Make sure you buy the type of seed you want. Sometimes tall fescue seed is mixed with other cool-season grass seed such as Kentucky bluegrass. This will be indicated on the seed tag.
Be realistic with the project. If fescue hasn't grown under your oak trees before, it probably won't now.
You can plant seed directly into a thin lawn, which is called interseeding. Lawns can be interseeded with two to five pounds of seed per 1,000 square feet.
To ensure even coverage, use a broadcast spreader. Be careful not to apply too much seed. If too many seeds sprout, they will compete with each other for light, water, space and nutrients. This results in unhealthy grass and possible pest problems.
For larger bare areas, top the seedbed with a light layer of compost and pack it down. Consider using a light straw
