Most Americans Confident
About Safety of Their Food
Eighty-two percent of Americans believe farmers and producers do a good or excellent job of keeping their food safe. That's the finding of the 2012 Food & Health Survey from the International Food Information Council Foundation. The high numbers are reflective of American's comfort in the safety of their food, measured by the survey in many ways.
"The U.S. is one of the top five most food-secure countries in the world, according to the latest Global Food Security Index," said Oscar Garrison, Food Safety Division Director. "Here at the Georgia Department of Agriculture, consumer protection and food safety are one of our utmost priorities. Our Food Safety Division is increasingly enhancing its regulatory efficiency and ability to react when consumers need it most."
The survey, released this summer, reports 78 percent of Americans are "confident" or "very confident" about the safety of their food and beverages. That's a 28 percent hike in consumer confidence

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week
All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to place classified advertisements in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (I.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/permits/registrations. Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. Ads must be received no later than designated deadline in order to appear in the following issue. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad category headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website. Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible,
on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address (es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. Send ads to:

In recent months, Georgia has had its share of heat and humidity. And, if you want to work out in your garden, you need to be in good shape to combat that heat, just like athletes, according to the University of Georgia Extension Service.
The human body needs time to adapt to working in the heat, whether you're running a marathon or weeding petunias. And, you can't rush the process.
The body needs to adapt to levels of work and heat, and, as it adapts, it improves the stability of the circulatory system and the balance of salt in the body. Don't assume if you're physically
you're used to it. But you'll be able to work in heat you would otherwise find intolerable.
When the body becomes overheated, less blood goes to the active muscles, the brain and internal organs. You get weaker, become tired sooner, you're less alert and your judgment may become impaired.
As strain from heat grows more severe, your body temperature and heart rate can rise fast. Workers may not realize the problem because they feel no pain. But a two-degree rise in body temperature can affect mental abilities. A

Is it true that a termite has a living organism in its body to help it digest wood? Termites feed on wood, but the termites themselves do not actually digest it. Instead, there are microorganisms living inside the termite's digestive system. These microorganisms break down the wood inside the termite into products they both can digest.
*** Will watering plants on a hot, sunny day scorch the leaves? No. The notion that you will burn, scorch or otherwise harm plants if you water them while the sun is shining on a hot, summer day is a myth. If wet plants, heat and sunshine were a dangerous combination, the tropical rainforests of the world would be filled with damaged plants. Probably the ideal time to water your garden is in the early morning since you will lose less water due to evaporation than watering in the heat of the day (especially if you are using a sprinkler), and watering in the evening can encourage fungal diseases. However, you will not hurt your plants by watering them when it is hot and sunny, and a plant that is wilted needs to be watered immediately, no matter what the time nor weather.
*** Do we grow pears in Georgia? We are not a major commercial pear producer, but people grow pears in their home gardens, and you may find some locally grown pears for sale at farmers' markets. You can eat Georgia pears fresh, baked, grilled or poached or use them to make relish, chutney, marmalade, pear butter and various desserts.
*** If you have questions about services or products regulated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, visit our website at www.agr.georgia.gov or write us at 19 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Room 218, Atlanta, GA 30334 or e-mail us at

* Gradually adjust to working in the heat.
* Take breaks in a shaded or airconditioned place whenever you can.
* Check the temperature and humidity at least hourly and monitor your response to the heat.
* The danger of heat stress increases with higher temperature and humidity and with direct sunlight.
* Design your work so you can do one task in the sun and the next in a shady place if you can.
* Younger, well-rested and physically fit workers are less likely to suffer heat illness than other workers. But even workers in good shape can become seriously ill from heat.
* Many drugs, including alcohol and cold and allergy medications containing antihistamines, increase the risk of heat illness. Check the label for sun exposure information.

USDA to Survey Small Grain Farmers
During the first two weeks of
September, the U.S. Department of
Agriculture's National Agricultural
Statistics Service (NASS will survey
growers of small grains, including
wheat, oats, and rye. The results of this
survey will provide a detailed look into
small grain production in the U.S. in
2012.
"As part of the September
Agricultural Survey, we will contact
more than 1,100 producers in Georgia,"
said NASS Georgia Field Officer
Director Doug Kleweno. "The results
of this survey will provide the basis for
official USDA estimates of 2012
acreage, yield and production for small
grains and county production
estimates."
NASS will contact Georgia small
grains producers to gather information
on their 2012 production and the
quantities of corn, soybeans, sorghum,
wheat, and oats stored on their farm.
Growers will have the option to respond
online or by postal mail. Farmers who
don't respond by August 30 will
received a phone call from a NASS-
trained enumerator who will assist the
farmer with filling out the survey form.
"I hope all respondents will take a
few minutes to provide their input
because the September Agricultural
Survey will benefit the farmers
themselves," added Kleweno. "The
results of this survey will provide
producers with timely, accurate and
useful information to evaluate the
outcome of the growing season and
make critical year-end business
decisions."
As with all NASS surveys,
information provided by respondents is
confidential by law. NASS safeguards
the privacy of all responses and
publishes only state- and national-level
data, ensuring that no individual
operation or producer can be identified.
Survey results will be published in
several reports, including the annual
Small Grains summary and the
quarterly Grain Stocks report, both to be
released on September 30. These and
all NASS reports are available online at
www.nass.usda.gov.

Field Office at (800) 253-4419.
Carter Black Receives
GFB Commodity Award
Dr. Carter Black, whose veterinary career spans more than 40 years in both private practice and regulatory roles, received the 2012 Georgia Farm Bureau Commodity Award during the Georgia Farm Bureau Commodity Conference recently at the Georgia National Fairgrounds & Agricenter in Perry. The award, one of GFB's highest honors, is given annually to honor an individual who has championed Georgia agriculture.
"We are proud to honor Dr. Black with the GFB Commodity Award," GFB President Zippy Duvall said. "When you run up on men who have spent their lives helping us [farmers] you can't help but recognize them. We appreciate Dr. Black and all he's done for us across the state to improve livestock production and to support Georgia agriculture."
From an early age, Dr. Carter Black had a passion for large animals, and during his stint as Georgia's state

Equine For Sale
If you have questions regarding ads in this category, call 404-651-9081.
All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within past 12 months. Negative reports are valid for 12 months from the sample date. A copy of this test report must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) cannot be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing any equine. Any falsification of Coggins tests can result in fines and/or suspension of advertising privileges in the Market Bulletin. This regulation also applies to equine advertised in the "At Stud" and "Boarding" categories of the quarterly equine editions.

Poultry/Fowl For Sale
If you have any questions regarding ads in this category, call 404-651-9081.
Any person engaged in buying live poultry of any kind for resale, or in selling live poultry of any kind bought for the purpose of resale, must be licensed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Possessing such a license does not by itself disqualify an individual from advertising poultry in the Market Bulletin; however, advertisers should note that all livestock (which includes poultry), must have been in possession of the advertiser for a minimum of 90 days or, in the case of chicks, ducklings, etc., must have been raised by the advertiser before offering them for sale in the Market Bulletin. Mallard ducks must be at least three generations from the wild before they can be advertised in the Market Bulletin. Advertisers must include this information in notices submitted for publication.

AG SEED FOR SALE
If you have questions regarding this category, call 404-651-9081.
Advertisers of agricultural seed must submit a current state laboratory report (not more than 9 months old) for purity, noxious weeds and germination for each seed lot advertised. A seed lot must be uniform and not exceed 400 50-lb. bags. Laboratory reports will be returned upon request. Any ads for agricultural seed submitted for publication without this documentation will not be published. Licensed seed dealers cannot advertise seed in the Market Bulletin. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless they are grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as Florida 304, Coker 9152, Coker 9835 and soybean seed, such as Prichard and Benning, may not be propagated for sale unless the seed has been grown as a class of certified seed. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office or the Georgia Department of Agriculture Seed Division at (404) 656-5584.

Market Showcase
Set For Sept. 15
Farmers and food company representatives from throughout Georgia will feature their products during the Georgia Grown Farmers Showcase at the Atlanta State Farmers' Market September 15, 9 a.m. 4 p.m.
This is the third and final showcase scheduled at the Market for this calendar year. The events, sponsored by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, are designed to allow consumers the opportunity to interact directly with those farmers and company representatives that are producing food products in Georgia.
"Consumers are interested in buying locally grown food products, and we want them to be aware of the Atlanta Market and the many food products that are produced here in our state," said Paul Thompson, Atlanta State Farmers' Market Manager.
Vendors scheduled to participate include those selling meats, produce, dairy products, processed products such as jams and jellies, and horticultural products, including trees and shrubs. Some food vendors also provide the opportunity for consumers to sample products on site.
There is no fee to attend the event, and there is no charge for parking. The Atlanta State Farmers Market is located at 16 Forest Parkway, Forest Park, GA 30297. For more information call 404675-1782.
During the Farmers Showcase at the Atlanta Market July 28, visitors were area to mingle with vendors from throughout the state. The next showcase is scheduled at the Market September 15. Nat'l. Honey Month Celebrated in Sept.
September is National Honey Month in the U.S, a time to celebrate the pure, wholesome goodness of honey and to honor the work of the honey bee and the beekeepers around the nation.
Over a decade ago, a group of honey producers and other industry representatives got together to discuss a powerful new idea: What would happen if they pooled their resources to work to spread the word about honey? By working together, they theorized, the industry could advertise, conduct research and promote honey in ways that were simply too costly and timeconsuming without a cooperative effort. The group moved forward with turning their good idea into a productive reality and the National Honey Board began to take shape.
In 1986, the Honey Research,
Promotion and Consumer Information Order was approved by a referendum of honey producers and importers, thus establishing a program for generic honey research, advertising and promotion. The national Honey Board was subsequently created by the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture to administer the order.
Honey is "manufactured" in one of the world's most efficient factories -- the beehive. Bees may travel as far as 55,000 miles and visit more than two million flowers to gather enough nectar to make just a pound of honey.
Notice of Equine Auction
Pursuant to Section 4-13-7 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated (Humane Care for Equines Act), the Georgia Department of Agriculture will conduct a live auction on the following equine.

The said equine may be inspected at the facility beginning at 10:00 a.m.; the sale will start at approximately 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 22, 2012. Pictures of the equine will be posted, when available, on the Department website: www.agr.georgia.gov. Contact the Equine Health office with any questions at 404656-3713. withstanding the availability of such documentation, or lack thereof, or verbal information given to the Department, said sale is for the equine on an "as is" basis without any representation regarding registration, physical condition or acceptable use of the animal. The Department reserves the right to add or withdraw equines to or from any auction. The successful bidder must be prepared to tender the price by cashiers check, money order, cash, or with personal check (accompanied with letter of bank approval) and move the animal from the facility by 4:30 p.m. on September 22, 2012. Payment MUST be made at the time the animal is picked up. The color and flavor of honey differ depending on the bees' nectar source (blossoms). There are more than 300 unique kinds of honey in the U.S., originating from such diverse floral sources as clover, eucalyptus and orange blossom. In general, lighter-colored honeys are mild in flavor, while darker honeys usually are more robust. Honey primarily is composed of fructose, glucose and water. It also contains other sugars, as well as enzymes, minerals, vitamins and amino acids.
In addition to gathering nectar to produce honey, honey bees perform a vital second function -- pollination. About one-third of the human diet is derived from insect-pollinated plants, and honey bees are responsible for 80 percent of this pollination.

Funding Opportunities
Available Via USDA
Value-Added Grants
The U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Business-Cooperative Service recently announced availability of $14 million in funding for its Value-Added Producer Grant (VAPG) competitive grants program. This program awards grants that help producers develop farmrelated businesses with a purpose of adding value to basic agricultural products through branding, processing, product differentiation, labeling, certification and marketing. Georgia producers who are interested in applying for a grant must submit applications by Oct. 15.
"This grant opportunity has great potential for our Georgia Grown members and farmers market vendors," said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black. "Value-added products and marketing help improve farm income and farm and rural employment opportunities, while creating more choices for consumers. Programs such as VAPG demonstrate how important and effective grants can be in spurring economic development and creating jobs."
Projects can include the marketing of any value-added products, including organic crops, grass-fed livestock, and locally produced and marketed food products. VAPG also funds regional food supply networks that benefits small and mid-sized farms by incorporating producers into larger farm-to-fork, or "mid-tier," value chains.

NRCS Offers Grants to Help Farmers, Ranchers
With Drought
The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture has made available up to $5 million in grants to evaluate and demonstrate agricultural practices that help farmers and ranchers adapt to drought.
NRCS is taking applications for Conservation Innovation Grants (CIG) to help producers build resiliency into their production systems so they can adapt to climactic extremes, such as the historic drought impacting the U.S.
The grants are offered to partnering entities to evaluate innovative, field-based conservation technologies and approaches, which should lead to improvements such as enhancing the water-holding capacity in soils and installing drought-tolerant grazing systems, thus helping farms and ranches become more resilient to drought.
Grant applications are due Oct. 15, 2012. Private individuals, Tribes, local and state governments and non-governmental organizations can apply.
Funds will be awarded through a competitive grants process for projects lasting for one to three years. Apply electronically at www.grants.gov/ or contact the NRCS National CIG office at
