Equine Encephalitis
Horses Need Booster Shots
During Hot Summer Months
With temperatures hovering around 100 degrees, owners of equine in Georgia are reminded to obtain booster vaccinations for their horses to protect against such viruses as Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), Western Equine Encephalitis (WEE) and West Nile Virus (WNV), according to State Veterinarian Dr. Robert Cobb. Horse owners should consult with their veterinarians to make sure these vaccinations are up to date.
The EEE virus, commonly called "sleeping sickness," is found today in the eastern part of the U.S., and is often associated with coastal plains. The virus is transmitted to horses and other mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians via mosquitoes who have fed on the blood of birds. The virus found in nature increases during the summer months as more birds and mosquitoes become infected. In rare cases, humans become ill only through the bite of an infected mosquito.

Success is Sweet with Ga. Grown Vidalia Onions for M&T Farms

It's been said about sweet Georgia Grown Vidalia Onions that "they only make you cry when they're gone."
That's why Georgia growers like M&T Farms in the heart of the 13-county Vidalia onion-growing area work so hard to produce the delicious sweet onions that are uniquely Georgian. Since they were first developed in the 1930s, Vidalia onions have become a prized staple in kitchens all over Georgia and the United States.
M&T Farms in Lyons, Ga., was established in the early 1990s when farmers Mike McKinley and Terry Collins

combined operations to produce 500 acres of Vidalia onions in Toombs County. M&T Farms also produces watermelons and pecans as well as a few row crops, but tasty Vidalia onions are the main focus. Both McKinley and Collins have been recognized as leaders in industry: each was named Grower of the Year by the Vidalia Onion Committee, a marketing association, in 1994 and 2002 respectively.
M&T Farms, whose market is wholesalers and retailers, recently joined Georgia Grown, the Department of Agriculture's marketing program, to inform consumers about the benefits of

Georgia's state vegetable over other kinds of onions.
"One of the challenges of marketing is trying to figure out the best way to get information out," says Aries Haygood, general manager at M&T Farms and chairman of the Vidalia Onion Committee. "We wanted to support Georgia Grown because we felt like it was going to be a great tool for Georgia agriculture."
According to the Vidalia Onion Committee, Georgia's 100 registered growers put about 12,000 acres--at 80,000

Intermodal Facility Helps Expand Reach of Georgia's Ports

If you asked most Georgians to name the state's major seaports, chances are they could tell you Brunswick and Savannah; however, Georgia has another port that, although not as well known, is having a significant impact on shipping within the state.
Located in the heart of Georgia, Cordele Intermodal Services, is an "inland port" that is helping to greatly expand the reach of the state's coastal facilities. "Intermodal" means that containers can be moved from one mode of transport to another (from ship to rail to truck, or vice versa) without unloading and reloading the contents of the container.
CIS is located at the intersection of 13th Avenue and Burnette Boulevard in the Crisp County Industrial Park on a 20acre tract located less than one mile from Interstate 75, Georgia Highway 300 and Georgia Highway 280. The facility allows direct container rail service to and from the ports of Brunswick and Savannah.
CIS is a combination rail terminal and truck-loading facility that lessens truck traffic in the ports as it allows cargo to be sent inland by rail to Cordele. Trucks can then pick up the cargo in Cordele for final delivery to their destinations. Conversely, export-bound truck containers can be loaded onto rail cars at CIS for delivery to the ports.
According to President and Chief Commercial Officer Jonathan Lefevers, CIS is another alternative to an all truck service to the ports. "We know we're saving them [the shipping companies] money," said Lefevers. His father, Brad, owns the Heart of Georgia Railroad, which runs from Cordele to Savannah.
He noted that the idea of forming CIS came from his father and his business partner, Duane Broxterman, as a way of growing traffic for the rail line. "We are essentially a customer of the Heart of

Georgia Railroad," Lefevers said. "What we do is such a hybrid,"
Lafevers explained. "We essentially are competing with trucks that are hauling containers to and from Savannah, but we're using these rail lines that we have at our disposal. We're replacing truck miles with rail miles."
The Georgia Ports Authority currently handles approximately 300,000 containers annually from the area stretching from the southwest corner of Georgia to the southern half of Alabama and the western half of the panhandle of Florida with more than 50,000 of these containers originating or terminating within a 50-mile radius of CIS. The facility is strategically located to attract container shipping from ports such as Mobile, New Orleans and Houston.
Although a variety of products are

moved by CIS, its location in the heart of Georgia makes it an ideal source for shipping agricultural and forestry products. To date CIS has been involved in the shipment of such commodities as cotton, cottonseed oil, pecans, and oriented strand board (OSB), a plywoodtype product used in the building industry.
Lafevers noted that the end goal is for CIS to become established as a container terminal. "I envision this as being a consolidation point--a centralized hub-- where, regardless of what the commodity is . . . that as containers arrive, they are loaded and sent right back," he said.
With about 99 percent of its business made up of moving containers for exports, one of the biggest efforts for CIS currently is finding import containers.
(Continued on Page 6)

A "reach stacker" container handler is shown preparing to move a cargo container from a railroad car at Cordele Intermodal Services. CIS is an inland port where cargo can be unloaded from trucks and loaded to rail cars to travel to the coast for transport by ship. Conversely, cargo can be off-loaded from ships onto rail cars for transport to CIS where they are transferred to trucks for travel to their final destinations.

Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week

All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to place classified advertisements in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (I.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/permits/registrations. Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. Ads must be received no later than designated deadline in order to appear in the following issue. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad category headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website. Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible,

on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address (es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. Send ads to:

Garden Chores
You can freshen up plantings of annuals, such as petunias and marigolds, this month by giving them a light pruning to remove the old flower heads and to prevent seed development.
As soon as seed pods form on crape myrtles, cut them to encourage late summer bloom.
For you fall garden, plant beets, carrots, collards, lettuce, onions and radishes this month.
Remove faded bedding plants and reseed the area with marigolds, petunias and zinnias to provide color during the fall months.
If your junipers, roses and marigolds have grayish, speckled leaves, it is an indication of spider mites. Also, check shrubs for white flies. If these are present, treat with a product labeled for control of these pests.

USDA Resource Guide
Available for Rural Areas
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has published a guide outlining programs the federal government has available to support rural communities as they promote economic development and enhance the quality of life for rural residents.
The publication, "Federal Resources for Sustainable Rural Communities" is designed for rural communities to have access to all of the federal resources that can support their efforts to promote economic competitiveness, protect healthy environments, modernize infrastructure and provide services to residents. The guide has information on funding and technical assistance opportunities available, as well as examples of how rural communities across the country have benefitted from federal resources.

Enjoy Summer Months With Ice Cream

As summer draws to a close, let's don't forget to enjoy one of America's favorite desserts -- ice cream. Georgians can treat themselves to a scoop of this delicious frozen dessert.
For all of its popularity as a tasty

and colostrum from mare to foal. Horses showing acute clinical signs of the disease are the most potent source of the virus.
In acute cases, the virus is characterized by high fever, severe depression, rapid loss of weight and anemia. Death often occurs within three to 14 days after onset of clinical signs.
The well-known Coggins test is the most common means for diagnosis of the disease in Georgia. These tests are conducted at the state veterinary diagnostic laboratories in Tifton and Athens, along with private laboratories approved by the State Veterinarian. Results are reported within two to three days.
The following recommendations are suggested for control of EIA:
Any equine showing clinical signs of EIA should be isolated and a veterinarian called immediately for testing.
If an equine tests positive for EIA, comply with current state regulations.
Buy only equine which comply with state regulations by having a negative EIA test within the previous 12 months.
Do not use instruments or equipment that may transmit blood from one equine to another without thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting.
Control biting flies, mosquitoes and other insects through sanitation and pesticides.
Test equine systematically to detect carriers.

frozen treat, ice cream also provides our bodies with protein, riboflavin and calcium. This is one nutrient dense treat parents can feel good about serving their kids on occasion for a special snack or dessert.
Calcium, one of the key nutrients in ice cream, is an important mineral throughout our life cycle. We all know that our body needs calcium for healthy bones and teeth, since it is the major component of bones.
During the rapid growth period of adolescence, your body needs even more calcium than younger children and adults. Almost half of your adult bone mass is formed during adolescence. Most bone growth is achieved by the time adult height is reached at 20 to 25 years, however in some individuals bone mass continues to accumulate through the third decade of life.
The growing body of knowledge linking calcium consumption with building peak bone mass, reduced bone loss and decreased risk of other diseases (colon cancer and hypertension) is gaining increased attention. A healthy bone mass is also one of the best protections against the occurrence of osteoporosis in later years.
One key is to start consuming calciumrich foods early. Recent research has shown that calcium intakes higher than the current Recommended Daily Allowance can result in increased bone density in children. If this increase is maintained into adulthood, the risk for osteoporosis would decrease. Scientists agree that good nutrition can reduce the likelihood of osteoporosis by as much as one-half.
Whatever your age, it's not too late to improve your bone health by consuming enough calcium-rich food. Even it you've experienced some bone loss, a calcium-rich diet can help slow the rate of calcium loss from your bones.
According to the International Ice Cream Association, the production of ice cream is an $11 billion retail industry with the U.S. being the ice cream capital of the world, as each American consumes about 22 quarts per year. In addition, pecans are the most popular nut and strawberries are the most popular fruit added to ice cream.

It's that time of year that Georgia consumers start to think about enjoying delicious apples grown in the state.
In the north Georgia mountains, harvest usually begins about the first of August with the picking of Ginger Gold, and continues into November when growers finish up with Arkansas Black, Granny Smith and Yates. The variety determines shape, size and color.
Some mid-season varieties include: Jonathan, Empire, and Jonagold.
Sandwiched between the early- and late-season varieties are many other apples of superb quality. These apples can be used in a multitude of ways: from pies, salads, and muffins to eating them fresh. And they come in a taste range from sweet to tart.
Apples are grown mainly in the northern and middle parts of the state and

"I live and breathe farming," said Martin. "I don't want to be the biggest farmer, but I want to be one of the best at what I do."
As the Georgia state winner, Martin will receive a $2,500 cash award and an expense paid trip to the Sunbelt Expo from Swisher International of Jacksonville, Fla.; a $500 gift certificate from the Southern States cooperative; and the choice of either $1,000 in PhytoGen cottonseed, or a $500 donation to a designated charity on behalf of sponsor, Dow Agrosciences.
He is eligible for the $15,000 that will go to the overall winner. Other prizes include the use of a tractor for a year from Massey Ferguson North America; plus other prizes.
Georgia has had three overall winners, James Lee Adams of Camilla in 2000, Armond Morris of Ocilla in 2002 and Robert Dasher of Glennville in 2010.

I have a lot of tree seedlings on my property. Is there a way I can donate them to help reforest the burnt areas of Colorado?
Trying to dig and ship your seedlings out West is not practical. The success rate would be low, you may send a disease or insect pest not found in Colorado (and cause them even more problems) and the trees growing on your property in Georgia are not the ones native to or needed in Colorado. Look for other ways to help the people and forests of the Centennial State.

As children we were told not to eat watermelon and ice cream together because it would make us sick. Is there a reason for that or any truth to it?
We know of no scientific reason for what you were told. In fact, there are numerous recipes that use Georgia watermelons to make some delicious ice creams. Your elders may have told you that to help prevent overindulging.

Does the juice of the aloe plant actually help burns, including sunburns?
The transparent juice from the succulent leaves of Aloe vera has been used topically for thousands of years to treat burns (including sunburn) and numerous other skin conditions. Numerous studies have provided evidence that tends to support that it is an effective treatment for minor burns. While it is only anecdotal evidence, we know of numerous people who got relief using it after burns in the kitchen and at the beach.
Aloe vera is an easy-to-grow houseplant that is readily available at Georgia nurseries and garden centers.

can be purchased at roadside stands and farmers' markets.
What do you look for in a Georgia apple? They should be firm, free of bruises and their coloring should have eye appeal.
With such a good variety and selection, the rewards of cooking with fresh Georgia apples are tremendous as they accent snacks, meals, beverages or desserts with their naturally refreshing taste and nutrition. Georgia apples are rich in dietary fiber, low in sodium and fat and contain no cholesterol. A mediumsized apple contains only 80 calories.
Some apple varieties are best for cooking or baking, while others are ideal for snacks or salads. It's best to consider Georgia's colorful variety of apples and choose an apple based on its intended use.
Georgia apples will keep for several months if kept at cool temperatures. Storing in vented polybags will assure better flavor.

seedlings per acre--into Vidalia onion production annually. These Georgia farmers produce about 40 percent of the total spring onion crop nationwide with an estimated value of about $90 million in yearly gross sales. "Vidalias," as the sweet onions are known, have become as much a part of a summertime cookout as hamburgers and sweet tea. Around 5 million 40-pound boxes of onions are shipped from Georgia's Vidalia region each season.
Despite these successes, Vidalia Onion growers face marketing challenges as all vegetable farmers do and are reaching out to a younger consumer demographic.
"Americans have some of the cheapest produce in the world," says Haygood. "We can do that because of the science and technology that we put into farming and to keeping the costs down for consumers. It's important for consumers to understand how tough it is for us to grow onions and how much care we put into the product."
The Georgia Grown website, www.georgiagrown.org, offers more information about where to buy Vidalia Onions. For easy, mouth-watering recipes from the Vidalia Onion Committee that your whole family will enjoy, visit www.vidaliaonion.org.

Garden Academy
Planned for Perry
The Houston County Extension Office and Master Gardeners will sponsor the 2012 Garden Academy, a multi-week program designed to help gardeners obtain the most from their plants through planning, preparation, and work.
Participants will receive the most recent research-based information available to guide them in tending their landscapes.
The Garden Academy is taught at night, thus allowing gardeners with daytime jobs to learn more about their hobby while continuing their careers. It is planned for Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. beginning September 6 and running through October 23.
Classes will be taught in the Extension Office multipurpose room in the Government Building (old renovated courthouse) in downtown Perry. The class fee of $120 includes all sessions, the Georgia Yardstick Workbook, and a collection of Extension publications.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Department Hosts Second Farmers Market Showcase

Earlier this summer Georgia Department of Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black announced a new initiative to increase the consumer retail experience with Georgia Grown products at the Atlanta State Farmers Market. To kick off the new initiative, the first Georgia Grown Farmer's Showcase was held at the market June 16 followed by a second event July 28. A third showcase is scheduled for September 15.
"These events utilize the Atlanta State Farmers Market to show our locally produced items," said Commissioner Black. "The Georgia Grown program has been revitalized this year and the showcases are part of our efforts to renew the retail side of the market. These events offer consumers the perfect opportunity to see what the market is all about."
Located off I-75 in Forest Park, just south of downtown Atlanta, the 150-acre market is one of the largest of its kind in the world. Georgia Farmers Sheds 13 and 14 are closed to through-traffic during

The second Georgia Grown Farmers Market Showcase was held at the Atlanta State Farmers Market in Forest Park, Ga., July 28. Two of the market's sheds were closed to through-traffic to allow visitors to walk through and mingle with the vendors. The next showcase is scheduled at the market for Sept. 15.

Martin Named 2012 Ga. Farmer of the Year

Showcase events, so that visitors may park and walk through, mingling with vendors from across the state. The first events featured nearly four dozen vendors and more than 2,000 estimated attendees at each Showcase.
During the events, in addition to a wide range of fruits and vegetables, consumers can also find locally produced meats, cheeses, plants and flowers, as well as jams, jellies, honey and other specialty products. Beyond the Georgia Grown Farmers Showcase, visitors can also take advantage of on-site garden centers, wholesale and retail shopping opportunities, restaurants and a Georgia Grown welcome center. A farmer for 40 years, Martin planted

800 acres last year, including 200 in

rented land and 600 of his own. He has

200 acres of timber, mostly planted to

pines in non-irrigated corners of crop

fields.

Besides cotton (250 acres) and peanuts

(125), he also grows corn (100), wheat

(175), sorghum (93), and rye (40). His per

Vendors at the Market Showcase sold products ranging from locally-produced meats and produce to jams, jellies, honey and other specialty products. 1,250 pounds of lint for cotton, 5,900 pounds per acre for peanuts, 207 bushels per acre for corn, 60 bushels per acre for wheat, 40 bushels per acre for sorghum and 25 bushels per acre for rye.
"Some of my cotton last year yielded close to three bales per acre," he said, "and my twin-row peanut yields were the highest I've ever produced"
With conservation tillage, Martin farms mostly by himself although friends help during him during planting and harvesting season.
He designed and built a cover crop roller implement to manage the rye residue. He used a 16-inch diameter steel well casing and attached it to the old frame of a six-row ripper-bedder. Metal bars welded to the well casing drum help crimp the rye stems.
"By rolling rye, we help prevent weed germination," he said. "Rolling helps control pigweeds resistant to glyphosate."
Rolling alone won't control all the weeds, Martin said. "You still need a burndown herbicide," he adds. "Last year, I sprayed first and then rolled. This year, I rolled first and then sprayed."
Though rye is his cover crop of choice, he has extensive experience growing other covers. For instance, his farm was the site of a three-year test involving black oats, a cover crop widely used in Brazil. The project showed that black oats helped control pigweeds by shading germinating weed seedlings. Information from this study helped secure funding for a USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service pilot project aimed at controlling glyphosate-resistant pigweeds.
His dedication to conservation and sustainable farming earned Martin recognition in 2011 by the Planters peanut snack food brand, a division of Kraft Foods. Co-sponsored by the National Peanut Board, this honor designated Martin as the first winner from the Southeast of the Naturally Remarkable Planters award. As the 2011 recipient, Martin received $10,000 to donate to a community project of his choice. He designated the Pulaski County Cooperative Extension Endowment as the recipient.
Martin serves as board president for the Ocmulgee Electric Membership Corp. He has been a member of its board since 1972. Since 1994, he has served on the

Georgia and other eastern states, as some animals die or are euthanized without testing," Cobb said. "Because of this year's mild winter, it's very important that horses receive these vaccinations." Annual vaccination is not adequate to prevent EEE in susceptible horses in endemic areas, such as south Georgia, so booster shots should be received every six months in these areas.
Symptoms in horses occur one to three weeks following infection, beginning with a fever which may reach as high as 106 degrees F. This fever usually will last from 24 to 48 hours. During the fever nervous signs appear that include sensitivity to sound, periods of excitement, and restlessness.
Brain lesions may appear, causing drowsiness, drooping ears, aimless wandering, head press, inability to swallow, among others. Paralysis follows, causing the horse to have difficulty raising its head. The equine usually is completely paralyzed and dies two to four day after symptoms start. It's estimated that nine out of every 10 horses infected with EEE virus die from the disease.
Detailed vaccination guidelines are available through the web page of the American Association of Equine Practitioners at: http://www.aaep.org/ vaccination_guidelines.htm.
Horse owners also should be aware of another disease, Equine Infectious Anemia, also known as swamp fever, which affects horses, ponies, mules, and donkeys, which is more prevalent during warmer months. However, preventative measures for this disease should be practiced all year round.
EIA is transmitted mainly by contaminated blood through biting flies and mosquitoes, hypodermic needles and veterinary and farrier instruments, but also may be contracted through the uterus
