The Fall Farmland Edition of the Market Bulletin will be published Sept. 5. Deadline for this issue is Aug. 15.
* Only farmland may be advertised. Land tracts must be at least five acres in size and located in Georgia.
* Indicate acreage and county where your property is located.
* All property must be for sale by owner; no real estate brokers or agents are allowed to advertise; property under contract with a real estate agent or broker is not eligible for advertising. Consumers are encouraged to call the Market Bulletin office to report ads not in compliance with this requirement.
* Descriptive terms should be limited to those characterizing farm property or agricultural structures, such as barns, stables, etc. Descriptive terms, such as square footage of homes, number of bedrooms, bathrooms, etc., will not be included for non-agricultural structures.
* Only one ad per household per farmland issue is permitted.

Union Co. Farmers Market Flourishes in N. Ga. Community
A decline in agricultural income and concern about losing farms to development were the impetus behind the highly successful Union County Farmers Market, a Georgia Grown Gold Member that generated $280,000 in income in 2011 for local growers.
The bustling market in Blairsville now features an average of 63 vendors, of whom 30 are farmers, on Tuesdays and Saturdays during the June to October
vacationing in north Georgia. The Union County Farmers Market
joined Georgia Grown as a next step in its outreach to the public, says Market Manager Mickey P. Cummings, who is also the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Agent for Union County.
"We want to educate people about the importance of buying and eating locally grown food," he says. "We want people to understand that this is a location where they can purchase locally grown food that is high quality and safe for their families to eat, and locally made crafts that are equally high quality."
The market had a modest beginning in 2007 on the grounds of the Union County Courthouse. Two years later, under the leadership of Union County Commission Chairman Lamar Paris and the rest of the
commission, voters approved a special purpose local option sales tax to fund a permanent location for the market. The market moved into its new facility -- a 50stall market with two open air pavilions, a community garden and parking -- in 2010. Booths are sold out for the season, and the overflow vendors set up in tents onsite.
"We wanted to promote agriculture and increase revenue, and it's working," says Paris, whose father decades ago managed federal programs that assisted farmers. "I go down there on Saturday mornings and walk around and people come up to me and say, `This is the greatest thing.'"

Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week
All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to place classified advertisements in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (I.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/permits/registrations. Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. "Once that part of our heritage is gone, it's gone and you can't get it back," says Cummings. "Instead of creating rules and regulations, we decided the best thing was to stimulate the [agricultural] market, which is what we did with the Union County Farmers Market. Now local farmers don't have to go to Atlanta to market their vegetables -- they can do it here."

But first the Union County Farmers Market plans to open a community canning kitchen in August, where local residents can "put up" the fruits and vegetables they buy at the market or grow themselves. The new facility replaces one built in the 1940s, when families depended on what they grew to get them through the winter.
"One man told me he went to the old canning kitchen with his mother and grandmother," says Cummings. "Now he plans to go with his children and grandchildren."
Not only is canning their own food a cost savings for families during difficult economic times, Cummings says, but it's
also another economic stimulus for the local economy. Several local residents plan to use the commercial-grade kitchen to produce food products for sale at the market. The facility will be able to process 92 jars at a time compared to just eight in a home pressure cooker.
The farmers market has become more than just an economic boost for Union County. It's become the Saturday morning gathering place that draws the community together. Cummings made sure the new facility had benches "where people can sit around and tell tales."
"I don't know how you can put an economic value on that," he adds.

Sunflowers, tithonia, cuphea, lantana, calibrachoa, butterflyweed, zinnias and portulaca also kept my garden and neighborhood fiesta bright during the heat wave, as did numerous flowering woody plants including crepe myrtle, dwarf pomegranate, abelia and althea. No shrinking violets, these!

In Food Hubs
Georgia growers on small and mid-size farms who face the challenge of selling and marketing their products on the wholesale market may soon find a solution in Georgia-based food hubs. Food hubs are places that aggregate produce, eggs or meat from many different small to mid-size farms and sell to buying clubs, restaurants, institutions, and grocery chains. Food hubs sometimes further process products to make them available over longer periods of time. Their distinguishing features are a commitment to work with smaller farms, to create a greater return for the farmer, and to allow products to retain identification with the farms where they were produced.
While there is a lot of interest in developing food hubs in Georgia, the first step is ensuring there is sufficient farmer interest. The Georgia Sustainable Agriculture Consortium is conducting a statewide survey of farmers to identify what services and infrastructure farmers desire in a hub and the geographic location of these interested farmers. This information will then be used to determine where and what form potential food hubs should take.
If you are a farmer who largely sells directly to the consumer but are interested in reaching new wholesale markets, you should take this survey.
The survey is short (less than 15 questions) and should take about 10 minutes to answer. It applies to conventional farmers as well as those that use organic practices. Thomas Paine wrote many stirring words in support of American independence. In December 1776 he penned the famous lines: These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.
Paine was a student of human nature and knew that many people support a cause in good times but when the going gets tough, fair-weather supporters fall by the wayside.
I was thinking about those words this Independence Day. It is impossible to read them without remembering George Washington and his troops freezing at Valley Forge. With the days leading up to July 4th this year bringing us some of the highest temperatures ever recorded in the state, Paine's words also made me think of our soldiers suffering in the temperature extremes of deserts overseas.
In Georgia it is often heat and the blaring summer sun, rather than winter's cold, that are the limiting, discouraging factors in our lives and in our gardens. It certainly has been the case this year. The heat brought me down after I did not follow my own advice about drinking plenty of water when I was outside for an extended period. Even though I wilted and retreated to my sickbed with a cold cloth on my forehead, my garden did not fail. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the flowers in it and other gardens in the neighborhood battled the heat. Many were true warriors; "summer soldiers" in a positive sense.
One of the best performers in my summer garden this year is our native gaillardia (Gaillardia pulchella). Its red

Tractor Supply Company, the largest retail farm and ranch store chain in the U.S., announced June 27 that it plans to open a regional distribution center in Macon, Ga.
The new 650,000-plus square-foot distribution center, expected to be in operation by the end of 2013, will serve stores in the southeastern United States. The distribution center is expected to employ approximately 200 employees when fully operational and represents a capital investment of more than $50 million.
"We evaluated numerous sites in several states and chose Macon as the best location for this facility," said Gregory A. Sandfort, President and COO for Tractor Supply. "We are especially pleased this new facility will be built in Georgia, where we have a substantial and growing presence. This new, state-of-the-art distribution center will replace a smaller, leased facility in Braselton that we have outgrown. This new facility will better support our growth requirements and enable us to continue to
grow in Georgia." Mr. Sandfort added, "We appreciate the
hard work of the county and state officials who helped us through the process. Macon's central location offers many benefits to the company and our vendors, now and in the future. We anticipate a very productive business partnership with the community."
Following the announcement, Lt. Governor Casey Cagle, Chairman Cliffard Whitby of the Macon-Bibb County Industrial Authority, Chairman Samuel F.
