Celebrate June
Beef Month
In a tradition that began back in the
1960s, Gov. Nathan Deal declared June is
once again Georgia
Beef Month. While we
celebrate by throwing
a steak or burger on
the grill, I'd like to
share some interesting
facts about beef cattle
farming,
our
community and beef.
Modern
beef
production is a family affair: 97 percent
of all beef cattle farms and ranches are
family-owned. The beef community
produces 20 percent of the world's beef
using only seven percent of the world's

Planet Turf Supply--a Business Grounded in Better Soil
Georgia is home to some of the world's top turf names, and turf and sod production in Georgia makes up nearly $117 million of the state's farm gate value.
Planet Turf Supply, a division of Planet Ag Supply and one of Georgia Grown's first Gold-level members, is a distributor of Holganix, a 100 percent natural product that can reduce input costs while providing superior turf growth and density.
"We joined Georgia Grown both for business development and to add to the
conversation about soil health and improved crop production," said Terry Whitley, owner of Planet Ag Supply. He said he was impressed by the results of field tests he reviewed while deciding whether to invest in the company.
"In terms of plant production and health, the Holganix studies just blew my mind," Whitley said. He stresses that Holganix is not a fertilizer, but works to optimize inputs by remediating the soil.
"We give growers the tools to restore the full, balanced biology of their soil. That's unique to the market, and independent university field studies show it works.
"It's a natural product, but one that meets the many needs of large-scale producers, not just hobby farmers. Improved soil, reduced input costs and

Food Safety Division Helps Egg Industry
To Assure Product's Safety, Wholesomeness
Ensuring the safety and wholesomeness of eggs is just one of the many responsibilities of the Food Safety Division of the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Part of that responsibility is to see that egg producers have the training and certification required to check their product and remove any suspect items from sale.
The approved method for inspecting eggs for such defects is candling, which is the use of a light source to examine the inside of an egg's shell for defects which would render them unsuitable for human consumption. The term candling is used because candles were first used as the light source to observe the inside of eggs.
Egg producers who want to sell their eggs at a farmers' market or to individuals are required to have an Egg Candling Certificate. The Georgia Egg Law requires an individual to demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the Department, the capability and qualifications as an egg

Georgia Grown Products Featured at Atlanta Farmers Market Event
The Georgia Grown Farmer's Showcase was held at the Atlanta State Farmers Market in Forest Park June 16 to kick off a new initiative to increase the consumer retail experience at the Market.
In announcing the initiative earlier this month, Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black said, "Agriculture is the largest industry in our state and this event will utilize the Atlanta State Farmers Market to show our locally produced items. Georgia Grown has been revitalized this year and this event is one of our new efforts to renew the retail side of the market. Whether you've been before or never visited, this is the perfect opportunity to see what the market is all about."
Approximately 2,500 visitors were able to meet with, and purchase from, a total of 46 vendors providing Georgia Grown products.
(Continued on Page 6)
Visitors to the Georgia Grown Farmers Showcase are shown at the entrance to Georgia farmers' sheds 13 and 14, which were closed to through traffic so attendees could park and walk through the area to mingle with vendors from throughout the state.
Holiday Closing Notice
The Georgia Department of Agriculture will be closed July 4 in observance of Independence Day.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week
All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to advertise in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (i.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/ permits/registrations. * Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. *The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. * Ads must be received no later than designated deadline in order to appear in the following issue. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. * Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad category headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. * There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. * Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. * Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by
telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website. Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible, on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address(es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. Signs Provide Recognition to Ga. Centennial Farms
Wednesday, June 27, 2012
Arty's Garden
If you travel along the highways of Georgia this summer, chances are you just might see one of the more than 270 Georgia Centennial Farm signs posted throughout the state.
The Georgia Centennial Farm Program was created to draw attention to historic farms and to encourage their preservation. Since 1993, the program has recognized 401 farms around the state that have been continuously operating as family farms for 100 years or more.
Many of these farms are recognizable by a Georgia Centennial Farm sign posted along the roadside or on the owner's property. The 18-inch square signs feature the Georgia Centennial Farm logo printed on a weather-proof vinyl decal, which is adhered to a 0.80gauge aluminum sign.
The Georgia Centennial Farm Program is administered by the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources; Georgia Farm Bureau Federation; Georgia Department of Agriculture; Georgia Forestry Commission; Georgia EMC and the Georgia National Fair and Agricenter.

sent out June 4. Farmers with direct or guaranteed
loans with the FSA are advised to contact their loan officers to discuss where they would like to have their loan files located and serviced. NRCS client files will remain with the NRCS field staff servicing those files. Farmers affected by consolidation will have the option of requesting the most convenient neighboring county office to conduct their future business, though their request is subject to state FSA committee approval. The requests can be made through the current county offices.
Two criteria were used to determine the office closures: 1) USDA said it identified FSA offices that had two or fewer permanent employees that were less than 20 miles from another FSA office and 2) FSA offices with zero permanent employees were designated for closure regardless of location.
More than 1,200 permanent FSA employees, including 22 in Georgia, have left the agency through voluntary early separation and normal retirement since 2011 to meet budget cuts imposed by Congress.
More information about the consolidation plan for FSA offices is available at www.usda.gov/strongerservice.

Celebrating 35 years of Excellence 1978 2012
Sheila Neave and her father, Bruce Peyton, received recognition last year for their Centennial Farm in Banks County. Ms. Neave shared the above photo, which shows the Centennial Farm sign they purchased and posted on their property.
The farm's original 139 acres was purchased in 1892 by Henry H. Peyton, grandfather of Bruce Peyton. In the early days the farm raised chickens, hogs and milk cows. Today, the farm raises cattle and hogs and produces hay, vegetables, grapes and honey.
Nomination Period Underway
For FSA County Committees
The nomination period for local Farm Service Agency (FSA) county committees began Friday, June 15.
To be eligible to serve on an FSA county committee, a person must participate or cooperate in a program administered by FSA, be eligible to vote in a county committee election and reside in the local administrative area in which the person is a candidate.
Farmers and ranchers may nominate themselves or others, and organizations representing minorities and women also may nominate candidates. To become a
candidate, an eligible individual must sign the nomination form, FSA-669A. The form and other information about FSA county committee elections are available online at http://www.fsa.usda.gov/elections. Nomination forms for the 2012 election must be postmarked or received in the local USDA Service Center by close of business on Aug. 1, 2012. Elections will take place this fall.
While FSA county committees do not approve or deny farm operating loans,

like a tiny snort or sneeze. You will hear it more often than you will the "humming" of their wings, something you can only hear when lucky enough to have one very near. Being close enough to hear the humming of these iridescent flying jewels is magical.
On still, summer afternoons I hear the snap of the seedpods of anisacanthus (Anisacanthus quadrifidus var. wrightii) popping open and flinging their seeds like tiny Frisbees. Tall ornamental grasses create visual poetry with the slightest breeze and please the ear with their rustling, especially in winter.
From the chanting of birds to the clattering of palmetto fronds in a stiff wind to the tiny sound of a paper wasp chewing a dead yucca stalk, the more I

July Garden Chores
Remove vegetable plants when they finish producing to prevent insect and disease build-up.
July tends to be the peak month for weeds, insects and diseases that plague summer gardens, so be sure to continue a consistent spraying and dusting program throughout the month. When using any pesticide or herbicide, remember to always read the product label and apply according to label directions.
Seeds of fast-growing annuals, such as zinnias, still can be planted this month, as well as transplants of petunias, marigolds and other bedding plants that still are available at local plant nurseries or garden centers. Plant the following vegetables by mid-July to allow time for them to mature before harvest: corn, lima beans, okra, pole beans and tomatoes.
If you have not mulched your garden already, do so now to get your plants ready

Georgia Grown Products Featured at Atlanta Farmers Market Event
(Continued from Page 1)
In addition to a wide range of Georgia Grown fruits and vegetables, consumers could purchase locally-produced meats, cheeses, plants and flowers, as well as jams, jellies, honey, and more. The event also included a petting zoo, entertainment, gardening speakers and more. Georgia Farmers Sheds 13 and 14 were closed to through-traffic to allow visitors to park and walk through, mingling with vendors from throughout the state. Visitors to the Market also could take advantage of on-site garden centers, wholesale and retail shopping opportunities, restaurants and a Georgia Grown welcome center.
In talking about the Showcase and Georgia Grown program, Drew Echols, Farm Manager of Jaemor Farms, a Georgia Grown member, said, "By promoting locally produced goods, Georgia Grown encourages the consumer to become more familiar with where their food comes from, increasing the economic impact of Georgia Agriculture,"
Located off I-75 in Forest Park, just south of downtown Atlanta, the 150-acre market is one of the largest of its kind in the world.
Two more Georgia Grown Farmers Showcase events are scheduled to take place this summer. Learn more at www.GeorgiaGrown.com

Equine For Sale
If you have questions regarding ads in this category, call 404-651-9081.
All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within past 12 months. Negative reports are valid for 12 months from the sample date. A copy of this test report must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) cannot be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing any equine. Any falsification of Coggins tests can result in fines and/or suspension of advertising privileges in the Market Bulletin. This regulation also applies to equine advertised in the "At Stud" and "Boarding" categories of the quarterly equine editions.

Water
(Continued from Page 12)
Three to five inches of mulch material, such as pine straw, leaves or pine bark will help plants retain moisture. Fine-textured mulches, such as mini-bark nuggets, will trap moisture in the soil better than coarsely textured materials. Mulches also help to control weeds, which use up valuable soil moisture needed for other plants.
Water only those plants that need water. Some plants, like holly and juniper, can survive weeks without extra water once they are established, whereas other plants may need water more often. With this in mind, group plants with similar water needs when you plan your landscape.

Any person engaged in buying live poultry of any kind for resale, or in selling live poultry of any kind bought for the purpose of resale, must be licensed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Possessing such a license does not by itself disqualify an individual from advertising poultry in the Market Bulletin; however, advertisers should note that all livestock (which includes poultry), must have been in possession of the advertiser for a minimum of 90 days or, in the case of chicks, ducklings, etc., must have been raised by the advertiser before offering them for sale in the Market Bulletin. Mallard ducks must be at least three generations from the wild before they can be advertised in the Market Bulletin. Advertisers must include this information in notices submitted for publication.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources regulates many exotic animals, including most hoofed stock except llama and buffalo. However, upon compliance with applicable state regulations, a deer farming license for the commercial production of meat and fiber is available for the following species: fallow deer, axis deer, sika deer, elk, red deer, reindeer, and caribou. For more information on the deer farming license, contact the Georgia Department of Agriculture at (404) 656-3667. For information on licenses of other species of hoofed stock (except llama and buffalo), contact the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Special Permit Unit at (770) 761-3044. Individuals submitting advertisements to buy and sell regulated hoofed stock in the Market Bulletin must provide a photocopy of the appropriate license with their ad.

AG SEED FOR SALE
If you have questions regarding this category, call 404-651-9081.
Advertisers of agricultural seed must submit a current state laboratory report (not more than 9 months old) for purity, noxious weeds and germination for each seed lot advertised. A seed lot must be uniform and not exceed 400 50-lb. bags. Laboratory reports will be returned upon request. Any ads for agricultural seed submitted for publication without this documentation will not be published. Licensed seed dealers cannot advertise seed in the Market Bulletin. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless they are grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as Florida 304, Coker 9152, Coker 9835 and soybean seed, such as Prichard and Benning, may not be propagated for sale unless the seed has been grown as a class of certified seed. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office or the Georgia Department of Agriculture Seed Division at (404) 656-5584.

they make decisions on disaster and conservation programs, emergency programs, commodity price support loan programs and other agricultural issues. Members serve three-year terms. Nationwide, there are about 7,700 farmers and ranchers serving on FSA county committees. Committees consist of three to 11 members that are elected by eligible producers.
FSA will mail ballots to eligible voters beginning Nov. 5. The voted ballots are due back to the local county office either via mail or in person by Dec. 3. Newly elected committee members and alternates take office on Jan. 1, 2013.
"I urge all farmers and ranchers to participate in this year's county committee elections by nominating candidates by the August 1 deadline," said U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack. "County committees are a vital link between the farm community and the U.S. Department of Agriculture and provide a voice to landowners, farmers and ranchers so that they have an opportunity for their opinions and ideas to be heard."
On June 4, Secretary Vilsack announced his intention to strengthen the FSA county committee system by appointing voting members from the socially disadvantaged (SDA) community in county jurisdictions that lack fair representation. The goal is to ensure locally elected representatives reflect the diverse interests of their communities.

byproducts, we are nearly doubling the productivity of this land that can't grow corn or cotton.
The current generation of beef cattle farmers has plenty to be proud of: Through better management, genetics and technology we produce 13 percent more beef today with 30 percent fewer animals than we did in the 1970s. The same improvements that led to increased efficiency on the farm also resulted in beef that is leaner than ever before.
For example, a sirloin today has 34 percent less fat than it did in 1963. In addition, in 2011, the American Heart Association added three select-grade cuts from the top sirloin to its Heart-Healthy list. There are 29 lean cuts of beef with a total fat content that falls between that of a skinless chicken breast and skinless chicken thigh, when comparing cooked 3-ounce servings. The US Department of Agriculture defines "lean" as having less than 10 grams of total fat, 4.5 grams or less saturated fat and less than 95 milligrams of cholesterol per 3-ounce serving. Included in the 29 lean cuts are consumer favorites such as the brisket, strip steak, flank steak and T-bone steak. Earlier this year, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a Pennsylvania State University study that demonstrated including lean beef such as those 29 lean cuts! in the daily diet can actually help lower total and "bad" cholesterol. The BOLD, or Beef in an Optimal Lean Diet, plan is rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts and beans, and it uses four ounces of lean beef per day as the primary protein source. While cattle farmers have worked to reduce the fat content of our beef, we have kept the great flavor and beneficial nutrients in that juicy steak. Beef is a good or excellent source of 10 essential nutrients including protein, iron, zinc, and several B vitamins. It is packed full of valuable nutrients and is considered by dietitians to be a "nutrient dense food." That's a fancy way of saying that you get a lot of nutritional value while only consuming a small amount of calories.
Join me in celebrating summer by throwing a steak on the grill: As the old saying goes, "the West wasn't won on salad." For more information about beef and the cattle community, visit www.gabeef.org.

beetle look ferocious, but they are not dangerous. However, if you pick one up, it may scratch you with its strong, spiny legs. It will also secrete a foul odor which it uses to discourage predators such as crows and owls. The females do not have horns. The beetles need dead wood such as old stumps and logs to reproduce. They are not an agricultural or forestry pest. Eastern Hercules beetles are an interesting part of our state's fauna and a favorite of insect collectors due to their large size, attractive coloration and overall impressive appearance.

Planet Ag Supply offers a range of products to optimize the soil for turfgrass, fruit and nut crops, horticulture and floriculture crops, cotton, corn and other row crops. 2011-12 university field tests of Holganix show it can reduce fertilizer use by up to 75 percent and provide additional weed control, reducing preand post-emergent herbicide costs.

Three Ga. FSA Offices to Close
USDA is proceeding with the closure of 125 Farm Service Agency county offices nationwide, including three in Georgia.

Use Water Wisely
Although summer officially arrived last week, many parts of the state already have been experiencing summer-like temperatures and low soil moisture for some time. With such conditions likely to continue for the foreseeable future, gardeners should take steps to conserve water as much as possible. Following are some tips to help water garden and landscape plants conservatively:

Candling is the use of a light source to examine the inside of an egg's shell for defects which would render them unsuitable for human consumption. The term candling is used because candles were first used as the light source to observe the inside of eggs.
Also, farms with over 3,000 laying hens which distribute eggs must register with the federal Food and Drug Administration, and be subject to its regulations.
To receive the Egg Candling Certificate, an applicant must successfully take and pass written and candling examinations administered by a

Farmers and ranchers interested in ensuring they are counted in the 2012 Census of Agriculture are reminded to sign up for the census before July 1. The U.S. Department of Agriculture will be mailing the Census in late December.
The Census of Agriculture is a complete count of U.S. farms and ranches and the people who operate them. A farm is defined as any place that produced and sold, or normally would have sold, $1,000 or more of agricultural products during the Census year (2012).
"The Census is the leading source of facts about American agriculture," said Renee Picanso, Census and Survey Division Director at USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. "The wealth of data available from the Census includes statistics on small, family farms to large, corporate farms; information on young, beginning farmers to older, experienced farmers; and insight into traditional, rural farming versus trends in areas such as
lifestyle and urban farming." The 2012 Census of Agriculture is
especially important for those individuals involved in agriculture who did not realize they qualify as a farm or have not previously participated in a Census.
"The Census provides the only source of uniform, comprehensive and impartial agricultural data for every county in the nation," said Picanso. "Through the Census, producers can show the nation the value and importance of agriculture, and they can help influence the decisions that will shape the future of American agriculture for years to come. By signing up and then responding to the Census, producers are helping themselves, their communities and all of U.S. agriculture."
To learn more and sign up for the Census of Agriculture, visit www.agcensus.usda.gov. All individual information will be kept confidential guaranteed by law (Title 7, U.S. Code, and CIPSEA, Public Law 107-347).

Are over-the-counter indoor foggers a good way to treat for bedbugs?
No. Scientific research shows that these total release foggers (aka bug bombs) are ineffective in the control of bedbugs and most other indoor insect pests as well. There are no quick and easy fixes for eradicating bedbugs. In a 2011 study conducted by the National Pest Management Association and the University of Kentucky, 76 percent of pest professionals cited bedbugs as the most difficult pest to treat. The industry, however, has become adept at treating bedbugs using a host of effective control solutions. If you have bedbugs, consult a professional.
The best (and cheapest) control is prevention. Here are five tips to keep bedbugs out of your home: 1) When checking into a hotel room, examine mattresses, headboards, box springs and other upholstered furniture for spotted stains that could be dried blood or bug excrement. Any hotel can have bedbugs. If you suspect a problem, immediately ask to change rooms. 2) Unpack/check luggage outside after a trip before bringing it into the house. 3) Do not keep luggage stored underneath a bed. 4) Use mattress covers designed to protect against bedbugs. 5) Avoid bringing used furniture, particularly mattresses, into your home.

A fascinating characteristic about cattle is their unique ruminant digestive system. It enables cattle to utilize lower quality feedstuffs, such as grass and hay, which humans cannot digest properly. In Georgia cattle often eat other things such as peanut hulls and skins, soybean hulls, cotton gin byproducts and corn stalks that otherwise would be plowed back into the earth or discarded. Cattle spend the majority of their lives eating grass. Some are raised entirely on grass which is called "grass-finished," while others spend a few months in a feedlot and are "grain-finished" on a balanced diet of grain and forage. To get that sirloin, roast or hamburger, the beef animal is harvested and distributed to grocery stores and restaurants or exported to other countries. Exports are a growing segment of the beef community; for example, in April 2012 the US exported 14 percent of the beef that we produced.
