May Designated As Egg Month

In the past, eggs have always been

commercial basis.

However, in the late

1950's,

farmers began seeing

the egg's potential as a

"Cash Crop."

As the idea and the industry grew, more

than 1200 egg farmers saw a need for a

Georgia Grown Watermelons are `Georgia Good'

When the board of the Georgia Watermelon Association considered joining Georgia Grown, the decision to vote "yes" was as easy as selecting a delicious Georgia watermelon.

Serve Ga. Farmers
During the 2012 legislative session, the General Assembly allocated funds in the Georgia Department of Agriculture budget for two new positions to enable the department to help Georgia farmers in addressing labor issues.
Floyd Taylor of Moultrie, and Taylor Williams, a native of Oconee County, will serve the department as agriculture labor representatives.
Taylor, who previously worked for his family's agricultural supply company selling fertilizer and agricultural chemicals, buying peanuts and running a cotton gin, will operate out of the department's headquarters in Atlanta. Williams, who grew up on a farm and is a graduate of the University of Georgia, will work out of the

products to consumers," says Charles Hall, executive director of the LaGrangebased association. "The overall branding of Georgia Grown is very good from a producer's perspective." The Association now is a Gold member in the Georgia Grown program.
The Georgia Watermelon Association, which was founded in 1968, promotes the best interest of the state's $98 million watermelon industry, from production to consumption. According to Hall, the association is constantly seeking improvements in the growing, grading, handling, transportation, distribution and sale of watermelons.
"The association works to increase efficiency within the industry and to provide the consumer with a better product," he says.
Georgia farmers have approximately 23,700 acres in watermelon production, he says, and the five top-producing counties are Worth, Tift, Crisp, Dooley and Wilcox. The United States ranks fourth in global production (China is No. 1), and melons are grown in 44 states. Georgia is among the five states including Florida, Texas, California and Arizona, that consistently lead the country in production. The 2010 Georgia farm gate value of watermelons was nearly $75 million.
According to the National Watermelon Association, about 200 to 300 varieties that fall into five categories -- seeded, seedless, mini, yellow and orange-- are grown in the U.S. Hall says the seedless and the cannonball-sized mini are particularly popular with consumers.
Consumers can start looking for Georgia melons in their local

supermarkets beginning in June, Hall says, and when Georgia residents celebrate the Fourth of July with a luscious slice of watermelon, it's usually from Georgia. Prime Georgia melon time is mid-June through mid-July.
The association, which has 130 members, is a chapter of the National Watermelon Association. One of its promotional activities is the selection of its spokesperson, the Georgia Watermelon Queen, at its annual convention. The queen, a college student, travels the state visiting supermarkets, festivals and welcome centers to educate consumers about the tasty advantages of watermelon. She also makes national and international appearances.
Few consumers realize the nutritious benefits of Citrullus lanatus, says Hall.

The fruit has Vitamins A, B6 and C as well as lycopene, a carotenoid with cancer-fighting abilities. In fact, watermelon has more lycopene than tomatoes.
And watermelon is well-named: it's 92 percent water.
So what's the best way to choose a Georgia watermelon at its delicious peak? Here are tips from the association:
1. Select a firm, symmetrical watermelon that is free from bruises, cuts

Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black and Barry Partlo, President of Agri Supply (both in center with scissors), helped cut the ribbon at the grandopening ceremony of the new Agri Supply store on Highway 84 in Valdosta April 27. This is the company's third store in Georgia. Based in North Carolina, Agri Supply also operates stores in South Carolina and Virginia. Agri Supply offers a large selection of farm supplies, hand and power tools, lawn and garden supplies, and other items. The Commissioner spoke at the event and noted the importance of the new store to area farmers and the economic benefit to the local community.

Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week

All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to advertise in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (i.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/ permits/registrations. * Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. *The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. * Ads must be received no later than designated deadline in order to appear in the following issue. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. * Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad category headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. * There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. * Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. * Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by

telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website. Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible, on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address(es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. Chef Hilary White, owner and executive chef of The Hil On the Hill: A Restaurant at Serenbe in Chattahoochee Hills, Ga., took top honors in the inaugural Golden Onion professional cooking competition in Vidalia, Ga., April 22. During the event, which served as the official kick-off to the 35th Annual Vidalia Onion Festival, the 12 competing chefs had just one hour to prepare and present a recipe featuring Vidalia onions. As first place champion, Chef White was awarded the Golden Onion trophy and received a cash prize of $500 and a commemorative plaque. The trophy, designed by Georgia artist Melissa Harris, must be surrendered the following year to the next winner. Shown above are (l-r) Yumion, ambassador of the City of Vidalia and the Vidalia Sweet Onion; Sonny Dixon, emcee for the event; Chef Hilary White; Vidalia Mayor Ronnie Dixon, and Ingrid Varn, Vidalia Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.

TSA grows on roadsides and in fields, pastures, citrus groves, ditch banks and other areas. It is spread by the movement of livestock and wild animals that feed on the fruits and then pass the seeds through their digestive tracts in new areas.
Fred Cartey of Watkinsville is a proud grandfather and successful gardener. He is shown with his first granddaughter, Kaitlyn, and the purple top turnip he grew in his garden. Kaitlyn weighed eight pounds, four ounces, and the turnip weighed nine pounds! The huge turnip was displayed at Gaines Elementary School in Athens, Ga.
Farmers' Market Opens in Ellijay
The Gilmer County Farmers' Market in Ellijay will open May 26 and continue operating on Saturdays until September 1.
The Market, sponsored by the Gilmer County Master Gardener Association, will be held 8 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. at Broad Street by the courthouse in Ellijay.
For more information, contact Martha Trotter, marthat@ellijay.com or 706-6362268.

Infestations also occur when manure, hay and seeds are relocated to uninfested areas.
If you have TSA, contact your county Extension agent for suggestions on control measures for your specific situation. Prevent the further spread of TSA by stopping the transfer of livestock that have eaten TSA berries to uninfested areas and stopping the movement of infested items to uninfested areas. The seeds can be viable for 10 years, so prevention is paramount.

Would you tell me how to get my bird's eye pepper seeds to sprout? I have been trying to do it ever since February.
Hot pepper seeds are slower to sprout and more erratic in their germination than those of sweet peppers. One common problem is cold temperatures. Hot pepper seeds must be kept warm while they are sprouting. Some professional growers use a special heating mat under the trays where they are sown. Some home gardeners keep an incandescent light source close over the trays to provide warmth as well as light. Water the pepper seeds with warm water, never cold. When you sow the seeds, water them several times in the first hour with warm water, each time removing the water that collects underneath the container in which the seeds are sown. This will get the seeds good and warm and start them on their way to absorbing water and beginning the germination process. Then keep the seeds moist by watering them one or more times a day, always with warm water. You do not want the seeds to dry out or sit in water so always remove any that collects under the container in which you sowed them.

GPC chairman. "The commission continues to work together as a partnership between Georgia's peanut farmers and the commission board and staff in funding research projects to assist with increasing yield, promoting peanuts and working on the farmers' behalf in Washington, D.C."
As required by Georgia state law, the state's peanut farmers vote on the commission every three years. The ballots were mailed to peanut growers the week of March 15 and the certified public accounting firm of Allen, Pritchett and Bassett counted the ballots returned on April 24.
"For two and a half decades I have been privileged to work with Georgia peanut farmers," said Don Koehler, GPC executive director. "The commission will continue to strengthen profit opportunities for Georgia's farmers through programs in research, education and promotion."
Georgia peanut farmers invest two dollars per ton each year to the commission that is used in the program areas of research, education, promotion and communication. For more information on the Georgia Peanut Commission, visit its web site at www.gapeanuts.com.

Equine For Sale
If you have questions regarding ads in this category, call Andrea Stephens at 404-6519081 or 404-651-9082.
All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within past 12 months. Negative reports are valid for 12 months from the sample date. A copy of this test report must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) cannot be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing any equine. Any falsification of Coggins tests can result in fines and/or suspension of advertising privileges in the Market Bulletin. This regulation also applies to equine advertised in the "At Stud" and "Boarding" categories of the quarterly equine editions.

Any person engaged in buying live poultry of any kind for resale, or in selling live poultry of any kind bought for the purpose of resale, must be licensed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Possessing such a license does not by itself disqualify an individual from advertising poultry in the Market Bulletin; however, advertisers should note that all livestock (which includes poultry), must have been in possession of the advertiser for a minimum of 90 days or, in the case of chicks, ducklings, etc., must have been raised by the advertiser before offering them for sale in the Market Bulletin. Mallard ducks must be at least three generations from the wild before they can be advertised in the Market Bulletin. Advertisers must include this information in notices submitted for publication.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources regulates many exotic animals, including most hoofed stock except llama and buffalo. However, upon compliance with applicable state regulations, a deer farming license for the commercial production of meat and fiber is available for the following species: fallow deer, axis deer, sika deer, elk, red deer, reindeer, and caribou. For more information on the deer farming license, contact the Georgia Department of Agriculture at (404) 6563667. For information on licenses of other species of hoofed stock (except llama and buffalo), contact the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Special Permit Unit at (770) 761-3044. If you have questions regarding this category, call Shavonne Smith at 404-6519081 or 404-651-9082.
Advertisers of agricultural seed must submit a current state laboratory report (not more than 9 months old) for purity, noxious weeds and germination for each seed lot advertised. A seed lot must be uniform and not exceed 400 50-lb. bags. Laboratory reports will be returned upon request. Any ads for agricultural seed submitted for publication without this documentation will not be published. Licensed seed dealers cannot advertise seed in the Market Bulletin. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless they are grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as Florida 304, Coker 9152, Coker 9835 and soybean seed, such as Prichard and Benning, may not be propagated for sale unless the seed has been grown as a class of certified seed. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office or the Georgia Department of Agriculture Seed Division at (404) 6565584.

What are some good baits to use in a rat or mouse trap?
Peanut butter, a peanut or nut, dried fruit, hazelnut chocolate spread, cheese or combinations of these come highly recommended.

What is tropical soda apple?
Tropical soda apple (TSA) is a noxious, foreign weed that can overwhelm pastures and cropland. TSA is native to South America but has spread to the United States where it has become a major weed problem, primarily in the Southeast. It grows three to six feet tall with thorny prickles on both the top and bottom of the leaves, the leafstalks and the stem. Its flowers have five white petals and white-to-cream stamens. TSA produces berries that are green-and-white-striped when immature and yellow at maturity.

The egg industry grew to become one of the state's most important farm products, and in 1972, Governor Jimmy Carter became the first Georgia governor to recognize the industry's importance to the state and its economy, by proclaiming October as "egg month." As the years passed, other states joined Georgia in recognizing their egg farmers, and May was chosen as the time for a national observance. The tradition continued this year, with Governor Nathan Deal designating May 2012 as "Egg Month in Georgia!"
As production increased, the industry turned its attention to cleanliness and freshness. In 1991, Georgia became the first state in the nation to require eggs be refrigerated at 45F or less, from the day they are packed until sold for final use. In 1999, it became a national regulation.
The Commission is governed by: an egg producer board; ex-officio members, Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black and Georgia Farm Bureau president Zippy Duvall; two farmer members, appointed by

USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will work in May and June surveying hundreds of farmers across Georgia to obtain a clear indication of the production and supply of major commodities for 2012. NASS will compile information collected across the country into one publically accessible report to ensure the confidentiality of individual farmer information.
Through two major mid-year surveys, the June Agricultural Survey and the June Area Survey, NASS will gather data on what crops have been planted and what commodities are in storage. This information will provide a comprehensive picture of how things are shaping up in 2012 for the U.S. agriculture industry.
"The agriculture survey is done online, by mail or phone, but for the area survey, we visit randomly selected tracts of land drawn on aerial photos and interview the operators of any farm or ranch on that land. We collect information on crop acreage including biotech crops as well as grain stocks, livestock inventory cash rents, land values, and value of sales," said Doug Kleweno, director of the NASS Georgia Field Office.
"This information is a critical component of several key national reports, including the annual Acreage report and the quarterly Grain Stocks report, both to

As a result, there are more deadline dates applicable to specific fruit and vegetable crops than in prior years. The

The Georgia Department of Agriculture equine impound facility in Decatur, Ga., recently hosted a field trip for Girl Scout Troop #28404. Mat Thompson (back row, center), director of the department's equine section, talked with the troop members about the responsibility and expense of owning a horse as well as other pets. Every girl was able to feed and brush one of the horses at the facility. The Girl Scout troop donated $586 to the equine impound from money earned through car washes and baking and selling horse cookies.
