"Fair Fever . . .
Catch It!"
The annual, state-sponsored Georgia National Fair, October 6-16, 2011, is an event for families celebrating Georgia. The
Fair is a "senseational" experience! See it. Smell it. Taste it. Touch it. Hear it.
Since the first Fair in 1990, we have stayed true to our mission: To produce a statewide traditional, agricultural fair. We note with pride the second generation of young competitors at the Fair. At one of the finest facilities in the country, our youth

Program Provides Assistance to Slaughter, Processing Facilities

In recent years there has been a growing demand from consumers for more locally grown food products, not only produce, but meat products as well. Two small Georgia companies, one a processing facility and one a slaughter/processing facility, are enjoying hard-earned success in providing fresh, wholesome, quality meat products to consumers. Both MSM Meats Company in Colquitt, and M&T Meats in Hawkinsville, provide a valuable service to consumers while also bolstering the economy in their respective areas.
The Georgia Department of Agriculture's meat inspection section has an outreach program to help both established and new operations in understanding and complying with the many federal and state regulations

governing meat processing and slaughter facilities. Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black noted that when potential owner/operators contact the meat inspection office with a vision of starting or expanding a business, they often are overwhelmed with the amount of regulations they must comply with and don't know where to start. "We want to help these businesses succeed as they not only provide products consumers want, but they also contribute significantly to the economy in their local areas," Black said.
The outreach program officially started about three years ago, but actually has been in effect for some years before that, according to Dr. Rex Holt, the Department's Director of Meat Inspection.

He noted the Department developed a user-friendly handbook to help owner/operators in meeting the basic regulatory requirements. "We take them by the hand and walk them through the process," Holt said.
Jeff Green, meat inspection supervisor for the Department in southwest Georgia, has worked with MSM, M&T and other businesses through all phases of the process. "If you start out on the right foot, you'll eliminate most of the problems," Green added.
MSM Meats, which had its grand opening in February 2011, worked closely with meat inspection personnel in growing its business. "We worked with them in all

USDA Designates Ga. Counties as Disaster Areas

During the September meeting of the Structural Pest Control Commission in Atlanta, Georgia Pest Control Association President Dennis Judy (right) presented Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black with a $1,000 check to be used for the publication of the Market Bulletin.
In a recent letter to Commissioner Black, Judy said, "Thank you for spearheading the drive to save the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin. As an institution in the State of Georgia, the Bulletin serves our farmers and consumers well. The Georgia Pest Control Association understands the importance of support and protection for Georgia's consumers and we wish to do all we can to support your efforts."
Judy also noted that the Association was but one of many groups affiliated

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack issued a Disaster Designation September 7 for 150 Georgia counties that have received agricultural production losses due to drought and excessive heat conditions which began April 15, 2011 and continuing. Governor Deal requested the action in a letter to the Secretary August 15 when the State Emergency Board determined sufficient production losses occurred in the counties to warrant a Secretarial Disaster Designation.
Damages and losses prompting disaster designations must be due to a natural disaster and a minimum 30percent production loss of at least one crop in the county must have occurred.

As a result of the desgination, farmers in these counties will be eligible to apply for emergency loans and to sign up for other USDA programs that provide assistance to farmers suffering agricultural losses due to natural disasters.
The only counties not qualifying as primary counties in the designation are: Baldwin, Chattahoochee, Clayton, Greene, Jasper, Jones, Muscogee, Newton, and Talbot. However, since these counties are contiguous to primary counties, farmers in these nine counties also will be eligible to apply for emergency loans and other USDA programs.

Fruit Growers

Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week

All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to advertise in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (i.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/ permits/registrations. * Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. *The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. * Ads must be received no later than designated deadline in order to appear in the following issue. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. * Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad category headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. * There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. * Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. * Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by

telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website. Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible, on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address(es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. Great Black Beans

This is an easy slow cooker recipe.

1 lb. dried black beans (do not soak) 6 cups beef broth or bouillon 1 large onion, chopped 1/4-1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (or to taste or omit) 1 clove minced garlic 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon ground oregano 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves 2 teaspoons ground thyme 2 lbs. smoked turkey (leg, wing, and thigh), remove skin Hot cooked rice Chopped fresh cilantro, optional Low fat sour cream

Combine dried beans, broth, onions, pepper, garlic, cumin, oregano, thyme, cloves and turkey in slow cooker. Cover and cook on LOW FOR 9-10 HOURS until beans are tender. Remove turkey, cool, and shred meat from bones. Chop meat and return to cooker. Reheat if needed. Spoon over hot white rice and top with cilantro and sour cream.
Yield: generous 6-8 servings.

Recipe notes: You may want to add more broth but try the 6 cups first. Do not cook on HIGH as the boiling breaks up the beans too much.

Testing note: Smoked turkey was not available for testing so Smoked Turkey Sausage was substituted. The turkey sausage was browned in a skillet and added to the beans for the last hour of cooking.

All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within past 12 months. Negative reports are valid for 12 months from the sample date. A copy of this test report must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) cannot be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing any equine. Any falsification of Coggins tests can result in fines and/or suspension of advertising privileges in the Market Bulletin. Any person engaged in buying live poultry of any kind for resale, or in selling live poultry of any kind bought for the purpose of resale, must be licensed by the Georgia department of Agriculture. Possessing such a license does not by itself disqualify an individual from advertising poultry in the Market Bulletin; however, advertisers should note that all livestock (which includes poultry), must have been in possession of the advertiser for a minimum of 90 days or, in the case of chicks, ducklings, etc., must have been raised by the advertiser before offering them for sale in the Market Bulletin. irrigation equipment, livestock equipment, lawn and garden machinery, new pickups, utility vehicles and all terrain vehicles. Software and hardware that allows for crop yield monitoring, automated tractor steering and variablerate application of farm chemicals also will be featured in precision farming exhibits at the show.
While most of the exhibits are geared to the interests of commercial farmers, the Expo also provides family-friendly entertainment with events such as stockdog trials and antique tractor parades. The show's hunting and fishing exhibitors will return with tips on bringing in wild game and catching trophy-size fish. Family Living exhibits will offer cooking demonstrations, seminars on backyard gardening and displays by prominent regional artist Jack DeLoney.
For the first time, the Expo will welcome a new group of visitors and exhibitors from Arkansas, which will be the Spotlight State at this year's farm show. Several agricultural agencies and organizations have joined together to spotlight the diversity of the agricultural industry in Arkansas, The Natural State.
Tire auctions held at the Titan/ Goodyear exhibit during the first two days of the show will once again raise money for the Georgia FFA Foundation.
The Expo also honors outstanding farmers by showcasing the Swisher Sweets/Sunbelt Expo Southeastern

Swamp". It will focus on the animals and natural resources to be found in Florida's wetlands.
Blalock praised the hundreds of local volunteers and others who help make the show run smoothly. "We have an incredible and dedicated group of people who come together each year to help with parking, driving the shuttle wagons, selling tickets, providing food and coordinating our field demonstrations. They really make the Expo a fun and safe educational experience for all who attend. Our goal is to help make sure that everyone leaving this show will feel good

about the agricultural industry, and that they will take home equipment or information they can put to use on their own farms."
The Expo is located on Georgia Hwy. 133, southeast of Moultrie, Ga. The gates open at 8:30 a.m. each day of the show. Admission is $10 per person or $20 for a three-day admission ticket. Children under the age of 12 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. For additional information, check the Expo Web site: www.sunbeltexpo.com or contact the Expo by e-mail at info@sunbeltexpo.com, or call 229-985-1968.

The Expo offers rides on shaded covered shuttle wagons to carry visitors out to the fields where they can see farm equipment in actual harvest and tillage demonstrations.

Some of M & T's best sellers and customer favorites are Jalapeno cheese sausage, country sausage (both fresh and smoked), and Vidalia onion sausage.
M & T currently employs 20 people, but Mathis plans to add 15 more once the website is up and running.

"It is exciting to see entrepreneurs, like MSM and M & T, succeed, and in doing so, to provide an economic boost to their local communities," Commissioner Black said. "We here at the Department of Agriculture are proud to be a part of that process."
In regard to the department's outreach program, Holt noted, "if problems are encountered at a facility, we want to be sure the problems are corrected to protect the integrity of the product and the consumer; we're here to regulate and educate at the same time."

Inspector Green summed up his role this way: "I don't like to regulate the Barney Fife way; I like to handle things the Andy Taylor way. We're not your adversary--we're there to help you come up with a reasonable solution."
"When we are contacted by someone who has vision, and we work with them through the process and we see them become successful, that is our reward," Black said. "We all have the same goal-- to provide consumers with a clean, wholesome, quality product."

aspects of the process, including the design of the facility," said Terry Pickle who owns the business with his wife, Martiele. MSM, named for the Pickle's children, Mallory, Shelton and McKenzie, is a small slaughter/ processing establishment that provides custom slaughter and processing for consumer's home use as well as inspected slaughter and further processing of products sold at retail and shipped to wholesalers.
According to Pickle, the business is based around his family's hog operation. "We raise and slaughter our own hogs," he said. Pickle explained that he had been involved in slaughter and processing for his family all his life, but he did not consider starting his own business until he began delivering to country-style meat markets. "I started asking questions, and had friends who helped put me in touch with the right people," Pickle said. One of those people was Inspector Jeff Green.
"The process of getting into the business is very overwhelming, but Jeff and some of his people helped us so the process was not so intimidating," Pickle said.
According to Pickle, he first had the idea for the business seven to eight years ago. "If you do it right, it takes a long time," he said.
Although 300 people attended the grand opening for MSM, Pickle said, "some people don't know we're here yet."

However, word is getting around about

MSM's Jalapeno and cheese sausage,

stuffed Jalapeno porkchops, pulled pork,

smoked pork chops, and homemade

Brunswick stew. "Our Brunswick stew is

different," Pickle said. "With ours, you can

make a sandwich with it."

Due to MSM's success, the business

has plans to expand. "Right now we are

just state inspected, but we are applying to

be federally inspected so we can sell out of

state," Pickle said. He noted that there are

businesses in Alabama and Florida who

want to buy from him once he has his

federal license. The operation currently

slaughters twice per week, but "my

business plan calls for a five day/week kill

when I'm federally inspected," Pickle

said. Once that happens, he plans to add to

his current 20 employees.

Pickle noted that MSM has the right

combination of ingredients to continue its

success in the future. "People want a good,

fresh meat and a local source," he said.

"Our quality is there, we have the right

genetics in our animals, and provide them

with the right nutrition."

M & T is a family operation that was

founded in 1963 and moved to its present

location outside of Hawkinsville in September 2009.
"The business was started by my father and grandfather and was run by my mother and dad until 1992 when I purchased the business," said Phil Mathis, was owns M & T with his wife, Tammy. "At that time, we purchased pigs at auction and killed our own pigs," Mathis said. He also ran a hog operation for eight years before getting out of the business. Currently, he purchases pigs under contract from a grower that produces them to his specifications.
Mathis noted he now is getting ready to launch an online butcher shop. "You will

be able to shop my showcases as you sit at your computer," he said. "I spent a ton of money getting it (the website) set up," he said, adding that the new website was one of the driving forces behind construction of his new building. Mathis noted online shoppers will be able to select options, such as cut, size, etc., "and we will ship to individuals anywhere in the U.S."
The company slaughters and makes sausage twice each week. Everything the company sells is at retail. "Our whole focus is freshness, quality and customer service," Mathis said.

production losses due to extreme heat and drought," said Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black.
The process for a county to receive a Secretarial Disaster Designation is as follows: the state Farm Service Agency Director instructs county FSA offices to conduct assessments of agricultural damage in their counties. Once the reports are approved at the county level, they are sent to the state FSA office in Athens where they are reviewed by the State Emergency Board. State emergency boards are composed of local representatives from 10 USDA agencies, and cooperating state agencies, and are responsible for assessing disaster-related agricultural damage. Reports for all counties meeting eligibility requirements for a disaster designation are then signed by the state FSA director and forwarded with the governor's request to the Secretary of Agriculture. The Secretary then notifies the governor in writing of all counties receiving a disaster designation.

Sorghum, like honey, can crystallize. Putting a jar or bottle of sorghum or honey in a pan of warm water will restore it to a usable form.

Do You Need to Find a New Home for Your Horse?

The Georgia Department of Agriculture Equine Office often receives calls from people who are struggling in this current economy, requesting that the Department take their horses because they cannot afford to care for them any longer. In fact, there are so many such calls that it is impossible for the Department to be able to take all the horses offered. Although a number of rescue organizations work with the Department in this endeavor, these organizations also are unable to accommodate all the horses offered to them. Here are some important facts that you should know and some suggested guidelines to follow if you are trying to find a new home for your horse:

horse. Network with friends and family to get
help if you are not physically able to work with your horse. There are knowledgeable people who are willing to help. Ask the folks at your local feed store if they know of anyone they would recommend.
Rideable horses will be the easiest to place in new homes. Work with your horse to get them to at least accept a saddle and bridle. If possible, move from there to accepting a rider.

Make a Flyer: Make a flyer with good pictures and a description of your horse. Include such things as age, sex, color, breed, and level of training (if any), temperament and any special needs. Be positive, but truthful. Child-safe horses are always easy to "rehome." Is your horse good around kids? Take a picture with children on or near the horse (only if totally safe), and use that picture in your flyer.
Does your horse have a current official negative Coggins test and is it up to date on vaccines? State this information in your flyer. Note: It is illegal to transport a horse in Georgia without proof of a current official negative Coggins test.
Make Your Horse Marketable: It will be very difficult to find a new home for a horse that you cannot catch. If your horse is untouchable, do something about it. Search the internet and learn how to work with your horse. Be consistent with time spent with your

What are some different ways to use zucchini?

Farm Front

Zucchini can be battered and fried. Instead of French fries made with Irish potatoes, use zucchini instead. The "fries" can even be baked if you want to cut down on oil. Zucchini can be sauted. Slice some thinly and put it in a pot with a little olive oil or butter and black pepper. Cover it and turn on the heat, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Try zucchini in breads, muffins and cakes. Slice zucchini thinly and use it with Vidalia onions, broccoli florets and tomatoes for a vegetable pizza. Use it in vegetable lasagna and in casseroles. Use raw zucchini in salads or cube and slice it for crudits that can be served with a dip or dressing.

Is Chinese privet a good shrub to use as a trimmed, formal hedge?
Chinese privet (Ligustrum sinense) can be kept as a trimmed hedge; however, it is not the best choice. It grows very rapidly and requires constant work to keep trimmed and looking neat. Also, it can be very invasive if it blooms and sets seed. Sometimes it manages to have flowers even when trimmed. It is overrunning many forested areas. Try yaupon or another small-leaved holly or a type of boxwood to create your hedge. Visit your local nursery and ask a horticulturist there for more suggestions specific to your needs and site.

Farm families looking to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the busy fall harvest season will soon get that chance. They are invited to attend the Sunbelt Ag Expo farm show to be held Oct. 18-20 near Moultrie, Ga.
"The Sunbelt Expo is an annual extravaganza of agricultural technology," says Chip Blalock, the farm show's director. "Now in its 34th year, the Expo has become North America's Premier Farm Showtm. Our goal is to bring together more than a 1,200 exhibitors and hundreds of thousands of visitors in our 100-acre exhibit area. During three days in the middle of the week, we provide a convenient venue that allows everyone to exchange ideas and see what's new in the business of providing safe supplies of food, fiber and shelter for American consumers."
The Expo also gained a reputation for southern hospitality in welcoming exhibitors from throughout the U.S. and the world. "Most of our exhibitors come back year after year," says Blalock. "We also have more than 75 exhibitors who will be attending our 2011 show for the first time."
New for this year will be the Georgia Agriculture building near the main gate. It will feature a number of new exhibits staffed by the Georgia Department of
Application Deadline Nears
For Conservation Programs
September 30, 2011, is the deadline for applications for two important conservation programs for 2012: the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and the Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP).
EQIP is a voluntary program that funds conservation practices based on state identified natural resource concerns, such as forestry, grazing, soil erosion, water conservation and water quality. There are about 60 EQIP conservation practices including, but not limited to: pasture and hay land planting, heavy use areas, waste storage facilities, terracing, pest management, tree planting, organic crop assistance, and wildlife habitat management. This list will vary based on locally prioritized conservation practices.
EQIP was originally established under the 1996 Farm Bill. It provides technical and financial assistance to landowners to voluntarily address soil, water and related natural resource concerns on private lands. Conservation plans must be developed for the entire area that will be

Agriculture and Georgia Farm Bureau. "We at the Department are excited to be partnering with Georgia Farm Bureau this year," said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black, "and we would like to thank everyone at the Expo for their help in making this facility available to us."
Blalock says the Expo is distinct among agricultural trade shows because it gives farmers a chance to get up-close to check out new machinery working in the crop fields of a 600-acre research farm. Crops on the farm include cotton, peanuts, corn, soybeans and hay. The Expo offers rides on shaded covered shuttle wagons to carry visitors out to the fields where they'll see a wide selection of equipment taking part in the harvesting and tillage demonstrations. Visitors will also be able to test drive new GMC pickups along with some of the tractors, especially those equipped with automated steering and other precision farming technology. A new addition in the fields will be the John Deere Gator XUV Utility Vehicle Test Track.
"Again this year, we will have seminar presentations and special exhibit sections on beef cattle, dairy, horses, sheep and goats, alpacas, poultry and fish ponds," says Blalock. "Anyone interested in raising animals would benefit from a trip to Expo." The horse demonstrations will return this year with a new and improved facility. The new "Priefert Horse Arena" is expansive and will host sanctioned horse shows and rodeos throughout the year. The Colquitt County Saddle Club will be organizing some of the horse demonstrations, including one featuring equine Special Olympics participants.

Horse Owners Encouraged
To Participate in Survey
In order to better understand the nature of Georgia's equine industry and the economic impact that it has on the state's economy, the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Equine has asked the University of Georgia Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development to conduct an economic impact study of the equine industry in the state.
The study is funded by the Georgia Commodity Commission for Equine, which is administered by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. All Georgia horse owners are strongly encouraged to participate in this survey. The response of horse owners is very important to the success of the study and the future of the equine industry in Georgia. All individual survey responses will be kept confidential.
