The Georgia Peanut Commission

Governor Requests Disaster Designation for Counties Suffering Ag Losses Due to Drought, Excessive Heat

celebrated its 50th anniversary earlier this month by holding a groundbreaking ceremony for its new headquarters in Tifton.
Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black was on hand along with local dignitaries to celebrate with GPC. "This is a building of the future which shows the stewardship of American agriculture and a great marketplace to reach thousands that come by on a daily basis," Black said. "I know this is going to be a headquarters and destination for all of the peanut industry, but really a beacon for all of agriculture as this program moves forward."
The building project has been in the works for a number of years and, after reviewing many options and potential locations for the new site, the GPC board of directors decided on the location off of Interstate 75.
"We started looking at different options six years ago for a new location and one with more visibility to promote peanuts. I applaud the county and this community for making the site affordable for us. I applaud their commitment not just to the peanut industry but to agriculture," says Donald Chase, GPC building committee

Governor Nathan Deal has requested a USDA Secretarial Disaster Designation for 157 Georgia counties due to ongoing drought and excessive heat conditions which began April 15, 2011 and continuing.
The only counties not qualifying as primary counties in the request are Chattahoochee and Muscogee; however, if the request is approved, farmers in these contiguous counties, as well as those designated as primary counties, will be eligible to apply for emergency loans and to sign up for other USDA programs that provide assistance to farmers suffering agricultural losses due to natural disasters.
"I would like to thank Governor Deal for his prompt action in requesting a Secretarial Disaster Designation for these counties," said Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black, "and I hope a formal Disaster Designation will be forthcoming soon from U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Vilsack."
The process for a county to receive a Secretarial Disaster Designation is as

follows: the state Farm Service Agency Director instructs county FSA offices to conduct assessments of agricultural damage in their counties. Once the reports are approved at the county level, they are sent to the state FSA office in Athens where they are reviewed by the State Emergency Board. State emergency boards are composed of local representatives from 10 USDA agencies, and cooperating state agencies, and are responsible for assessing disaster-related agricultural damage. Reports for all counties meeting eligibility requirements for a disaster designation are then signed by the state FSA director and forwarded with the governor's request to the Secretary of Agriculture. The Secretary then notifies the governor in writing of all counties receiving a disaster designation.
It normally takes two three weeks after the information is received by the Secretary for a request to be approved or denied. Damages and losses prompting disaster designations must be due to a natural disaster and a minimum 30percent production loss of at least one crop in the county must have occurred.

Is there a variety of tomato called "toy box?" I had a salad recently that consisted of different colors of tomatoes that the menu listed as toy box tomatoes.
There is not one particular variety that is the "toy box" tomato. The name is sometimes used to market a combination of different colors of small tomatoes. Combining different colors together makes a very attractive dish, and seeing all the colors together may make you think of balls or small toys spilling out of a toy chest. Visit nurseries and seed catalogs and look for different colors (red, yellow, orange, green, purplish red) of cherry and pear tomatoes and other small tomatoes if you want to grow some yourself.

All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within past 12 months. Negative reports are valid for 12 months from the sample date. A copy of this test report must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) cannot be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing any equine. Any falsification of Coggins tests can result in fines and/or suspension of advertising privileges in the Market Bulletin. This regulation also applies to equine advertised in the "At Stud" and "Boarding" categories of the quarterly equine editions.

Any person engaged in buying live poultry of any kind for resale, or in selling live poultry of any kind bought for the purpose of resale, must be licensed by the Georgia department of Agriculture. Possessing such a license does not by itself disqualify an individual from advertising poultry in the Market Bulletin; however, advertisers should note that all livestock (which includes poultry), must have been in possession of the advertiser for a minimum of 90 days or, in the case of chicks, ducklings, etc., must have been raised by the advertiser before offering them for sale in the Market Bulletin. Mallard ducks must be at least three generations from the wild before they can be advertised in the Market Bulletin. Advertisers must include this information in notices submitted for publication.

Georgia's apple harvest is underway and will continue into the fall months, so be sure to use fresh Georgia apples when preparing the following recipe.
Apple Loaf
3 cups peeled, finely chopped Georgia apples 3 cups all purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 2 cups sugar 3 eggs 1 1/4 cups vegetable oil 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Combine ingredients in large mixing bowl. Stir until well combined. Pour into 2 greased 9x5-inch loaf pans. Bake for 55 to 60 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool on wire rack 10 minutes. Remove from pans and cool completely before wrapping tightly to store.
Testing note: This makes tasty breakfast bread - not too sweet. If you prefer, add 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon with the flour. Wrapped airtight, this bread will freeze well.
All recipes have been tested for accuracy by Georgia Department of Agriculture home economists unless otherwise indicated.
The Market Bulletin has received a number of requests for more "healthy" recipes (low or no sugar, low fat, etc.). Our office receives recipes for cakes, pies and other desserts, but not many for entrees or side dishes utilizing GeorgiaGrown fruits and vegetables. AG SEEd FOR SALE
If you have questions regarding this category, call Shavonne Smith at 404-6519081 or 404-651-9082.
Advertisers of agricultural seed must submit a current state laboratory report (not more than 9 months old) for purity, noxious weeds and germination for each seed lot advertised. A seed lot must be uniform and not exceed 400 50-lb. bags. Laboratory reports will be returned upon request. Any ads for agricultural seed submitted for publication without this documentation will not be published. Licensed seed dealers cannot advertise seed in the Market Bulletin. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless they are grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as Florida 304, Coker 9152, Coker 9835 and soybean seed, such as Prichard and Benning, may not be propagated for sale unless the seed has been grown as a class of certified seed. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office or the Georgia department of Agriculture Seed division at (404) 656-5584.
