SUKE Program sign-up
Now Underway in Ga.
The sign-up period for the 2009 crop year Supplemental Revenue Assistance Payments (SURE) program began Jan. 10. At this time a sign-up deadline has not been announced by USDA. SURE is one of five disaster programs USDA Farm Service Agency offers that provides assistance to farmers and ranchers who have suffered losses due to natural disasters.
"This program provides assistance to producers who have suffered from natural disasters and is part of the 'safety net' designed to assist farmers and ranchers who feed America and the world," said FSA State Executive Director Hobby Stripling. "USDA encourages producers who suffered losses during the 2009 crop year to visit their local FSA oftice to learn niore about the SURE program..'
To be eligible for SURE a farm must have:
* At least a 10 percent production loss
on a crop of economic significance;
* A policy or plan of insurance under the
Federal Crop Insurance Act or the Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) for all economically

My house has a Southwest desert decor. I want to use cacti indoors. Do they make good houseplants?
There are numerous types of cacti that may be used as houseplants. Visit a local garden center to see some of the options. Cacti do have a high light requirement and are unsuitable for dark rooms.
What kind of kerosene should be burned in a home heater?
Only K-1 kerosene should be burned in a home heater. Also, heater manufacturers and the Georgia Department of Agriculture recommend clear, non-dyed fuel for home use because over an extended period of time, dye can damage a heater. Be sure to follow all the manufacturer's safety instructions when using a kerosene heater.
How close should a houseplant be placed to an incandescent light?
Generally, it is best to keep the tops of plants at least one foot away from incandescent light sources. A rule of thumb is: If your hand feels warm when held at the foliage closest to the light source, the plant is too close. Because compact fluorescent light bulbs generate less heat, they can be used closer to houseplants.
Do I need a beekeeper license?
Only people producing queen and package bees for sale are required to be licensed.
If you have questions about services or products regulated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, visit our website at www.agr.georgia.gov or write us at 19 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Room 227, Atlanta, G A 30334 or e-mail us at info@agr.georgia.gov.
take the steps necessary to ensure its future success. That's why we will invite a limited number of paid advertisers to join as partners in the near future. That's why we will imvrove the online version to make it more user-friendly and provide more realtime access to information.
But first things fist. My call to you is to help us save the Market Bulletin by returning your annual subscription as soon as possible. If you are among those who have not paid for your subs&iption, we must receive your payment before April 20, 2011, to avert a future lead story entitled "The End of an Era." I believe we can seize this moment to improve the Bulletin for generations to come. I need your help. Georgia needs your help. The opportunities are exciting, the work ahead challenging. Thank you for the privilege to serve.
