Notice
Is the Red Delicious apple grown in Washington the same Red Delicious apple grown in Georgia? They do not look the same.
Both states grow the same Red Delicious variety. However, when the Red Delicious variety is grown in the South it looks different than it does when grown in the cool Pacific Northwest. Our Red Delicious apples are rounder than and not as elongated as those from Washington. Also, ours are not as red. If you are only familiar with Washington State apples, try some of the ones grown here in Georgia. You will not be disappointed.
When is apple season in Georgia?
The bulk of Georgia's apple harvest is in the late summer and fall (August -December) but a few varieties ripen in early summer. The long season is due to our geography (north-south orientation and changes in elevation) and due to the fact that we grow almost four dozen varieties commercially in the state. If you only know one or two apple varieties, make this the year to try something different like an Arkansas Black, Detroit Red, Stayman Winesap, Limbertwig, Ozark Gold, Lady, Cameo, Ginger Gold, Goldrush, Horse, Rome Beauty, Pritchett Golden, Braeburn, Criterion, Splendor, Swiss Gourmet, Yates, Empire, Albemarle Pippin, McIntosh, Mutsu, Gala, Pristine or Honeycrisp. Buy them in grocery stores, at farmers markets or at the orchard. A day trip to a Georgia apple orchard can be a fun and educational adventure for the whole family. If you want more festivity, the 39th Georgia Apple Festival will be held in Ellijay on the weekends of October 9-10 and October 16-17.

Notice of Intent to Consider the Adoption of an Amendment to the Rules to exclude prepackaged fresh shrimp from certain provisions of Departmental Rule 40-7-5-.02, relating to the retail sale of fresh seafood, meat or poultry from mobile vehicles.
TO ALL INTERESTED PERSONS AND PARTIES:
Notice is hereby given that the Georgia Department of Agriculture will be accepting written comments regarding the adoption of an amendment to Rule 40-7-5-.02, relating to the retail sale of fresh and frozen seafood, meat, poultry and other foods from mobile vehicles, pursuant to the Official Code of
Georgia Annotated, O.C.G.A. 5 26-2-412. The
Department will be accepting written comments from September 17,2010, to close of business (4:30 p.m. EDT) on October 18,2010.
SYNOPSIS, MAIN FEATURES AND DIFFERENCES:
It is proposed to amend Departmental Rule 40-75-.02 by adding a provision that would exclude prepackaged fresh shrimp from the following provisions of Rule 40-7-5-.02: (2). (4), (5), (6), (7), (8) & (13). The exclusion would apply only to fresh shrimp that have been prepackaged in a facility that is currently licensed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Consumer Protection Division. The prepackaged shrimp could then be offered for sale from a land-based mobile retail vehicle that is also licensed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Consumer Protection Division, as is required by Rule 40-7-5-.02(1).
The proposed amendment would add a new subsection to the existing rule and would require all prepackaged fresh shrimp to comply with Departmental Rules 40-7-1-.25, relating to accurate representation; 40-7-1-.26, relating to labeling; and 40-15-3, relating to weights and measures, packaging, labeling, advertising, and representation. Further, if prepackaged fresh shrimp is not stored, handled, labeled, or offered for sale in compliance with these regulations, the shrimp would be deemed adulterated or misbranded and subject to stop sale or disposal by the Department.
The purpose of this rules amendment is to allow commercial shrimpers from Georgia the ability to sell their fresh product direct to the consumer without having to further process their product through the freezing process. This will help shrimpers maintain a fair market price when supply is greater than demand, which occurs several times a year due to shrimp spawning and growth cycles.
Interested persons may call or submit a written request to obtain a copy of the proposed rules change. Please submit written comments to:
