On July 1, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College began operating the Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village in Tifton. I think it's going to be a transformational change for

this college. In fact, it's going to be great!
Georgia's Museum of Agriculture opened on July 1, 1976 as the Agrirama. It now includes a static museum, galleries, historic buildings, a traditional 1870s farm community, and an 1890s progressive farmstead, all of which come life when interpreters dressed in period attire talk

Are all tomatoes red?
No. There are tomatoes that are orange, yellow, yellowish green, white (ivory) and pink (pinkish red) when ripe. Some like 'Black Russian' and 'Cherokee Purple' get their names because they are so much darker than standard red tomatoes. Some varieties are yellow or orange and marbled with red. Check seed catalogs, especially those specializing in tomatoes and heirloom varieties of vegetables, to see many tomatoes that are quite different from the ubiquitous red ones. You may also see them at farmers markets, as some small farmers are growing these specialty and heirloom varieties. It is possible to get a mental picture of the color possibilities by looking at the names of some of these less familiar varieties: 'Big Rainbow,' 'Georgia Streak,' 'Black Cherry,' 'Green Grape,' 'Chocolate Stripe,' 'Emerald Apple,' 'Green Zebra,' 'White Wonder,' 'Sungold,' 'Violet Jasper,' 'Persimmon,' 'Black Prince,' 'Carbon' and 'Orange Fleshed Purple Smudge.' If you want something different, try some of these in your garden or on your dinner plate.
Why are tomato plants called vines? What is a "vine-ripened"tomato?
Tomato plants do not twine as morning-glory or bean vines do. They do not cling to walls or posts with rootlets the way English ivy does. They do not attach themselves with tendrils the way grape vines do. However, because of the loose, sprawling habit that requires some varieties to need staking or trellising, tomato plants are sometimes called vines. A vineripened tomato is a tomato that is allowed to ripen while still on the vine. It is picked when it is ripe. It is not as suitable for shipping as those picked green or nearly green and gassed with ethylene to ripen them. One note of caution: there are some sellers who will call a tomato "vine-ripened" if it is picked when it is showing any redness or color other than green. You are most l~kelyto get truly vine-ripened tomatoes by growing them yourself or buying directly from the grower at the farm or at a farmers market.
Are there any green-fleshed cantaloupes (muskmelons)?
There are some that have green or green with orange flesh. Two well-known varieties are 'Rocky Ford' and 'Jenny Lind.'

Ga. Okra Provides Main Ingredient to Many Summer and Fall Meals
Consumers may not readily associate Georgia with okra production, but this vegetable is one of many produced by the state's farmers. Okra can be found throughout the state at farmers' markets and roadside stands and is a favorite of many home gardeners.
Okra has been a staple in Southern diets for generations, and it has been a main ingredient at picnics, family reunions and dinners at home. Whether mixed in a gumbo, served with tomatoes, or fried, okra is a great-tasting southern specialty.
Okra contains many of the nutrients essential to good health. It's a good source of fiber, Vitamin C, calcium and potassium

November, okra is a great vegetable for summer or fall meals. Georgia's okra production is concentrated in the southern part of the state. The consistently warm and humid conditions offer an ideal climate for growing okra.
A Buyer's Guide to Okra
Okra is the immature seed pod of the okra plant.
Look for pods that are tender; tips should bend with very slight pressure.
Pods should be under 4 M inches long, bright green and free from blemishes and decay.
Fresh okra bruises easily, so handle with care.
If refrigerated, okra will keep for up to ten days.
To enjoy okra year-round, try freezing. .To freeze, wash pods and remove stem ends. Blanch (scald in boiling water) for three to four minutes. Immerse in cold
- water for three minutes to halt the cooking
process. Drain and package in freezer bags (Continued on Page 11)

Georgia residentsonly may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. 'The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad categoty headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. * There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under categoty headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. * Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. * Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by

blacksmith shop, schoolhouse, feed and seed store, print shop, grist mill, cotton gin, syrup mill and turpentine still.
Facing constant challenges to its mission and budget, the Museum's dedicated personnel struggled at times over the last 34 years. The future, however, is much brighter. You couldn't have picked a better pairing than ABAC and Georgia's Museum of Agriculture. Commonality and a synergy abound. The two share a common community and a common constituency.
Putting the Museum under ABAC's care is a win-win. Georgia's K-12 students, the community and the taxpayers benefit, but so do ABAC students. It provides them with a wonderful living, learning laboratory, work opportunities and venues for student performances, whether it's music, theatre, folklore, or storytelling.
Our priorities are historic preservation and education. Students and faculty from ABAC's agriculture, forestry, wildlife, performing arts, business and education programs are already getting involved. The Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village is a perfect place for study by ABAC's Rural Studies students. The Rural Studies program includes bachelor's degrees in the humanities, social science and business. One Rural Studies student is serving as an intern at the Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village this summer.
The transition, which began last
leadership. He will succeed.
The change of control from the
Georgia Agrirama Development
Authority to ABAC has been in the works
since Jan. 14 when the Office of Planning
and Budget and the Governor's Office
requested that I work with legislators,
local elected officials, and members of
the Authority to move management and
operations to ABAC.
Georgia lawmakers passed House Bill
1090 on April 12 which paved the way to
move all assets of the Museum to the
University System of Georgia (USG).
The bill was introduced by
Representatives Austin Scott (153rd) and
Jay Roberts (154th) with the support of
other area representatives.
The
legislation was carried in the Senate by
Senator John Crosby (13th District) and
Senator John Bulloch (11th District). The USG Board of Regents took
action on May 12 to facilitate the transfer of assets, including land and buildings, from the Georgia Agrirama Development Authority to the USG. Governor Sonny Perdue signed the bill on May 20.
While much has been accomplished. much remains to be done. 1 want to assure everyone across this great state that ABAC intends to operate a successful museum. We will not only continue the educational outreach program, we will expand and improve it. The facility will also remain open to the public.
We see this new venture as an opportunity for ABAC to better serve the citizens of Georgia, and we intend to do our part to make sure that happens.
Georgia to Receive Funding
For Rural Broadband Projects
The second round of federal Recovery Act funding for broadband has been announced and two rural Georgia projects
were selected. Wilkes Telephone & Electric
Company was selected to receive $48.1 million in loan and grant funds to enhance broadband communication options for businesses and families in Lincoln, Taliaferro and Wilkes counties.
The infrastructure will pass 7,832
pass 240 households and 20 businesses. The projects were announced and are
among 66 projects nationwide, with 37 in
rural areas. Funding is contingent upon the recipient meeting the terms of the loan, grant or loanlgrant agreement.

program, visit http:llwww~urdev.usda.gov/ rus/telecom/index.htm. The point of contact in Georgia is Andrew Hayes: email andrew.hayes@wdc.usda.govor call 770-
What is the difference between sassafras, red sassafras and white sassafras? Which one often grows along fences?
Sassafras (Sassaffas albidum) is native to Georgia and grows throughout the state. Most people just call it "sassafras," but a few people call it "red sassafras" or "white sassafras." However, it is the same tree. It often grows along fences because birds eat the small fruit and deposit the seed in their droppings when they are resting on the fence wire or fencepost.
Can you tell me what is keeping my tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants from setting fruit? They were fine until recentlv.
Temperatures above 90 degrees or below 60 degrees will keep tomatoes, eggplants and peppers from setting fruit.

It seems as though all my fruits and vegetables are coming in at the same time. M~ neighbors and I have given away much of our excess harvest to local food banks and to those feeding the needy, but we sure would like to have some of these fruits and vegetables later in the fall and winter, where could we
