ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, JULY 15,1926. No. 48.

United States Department of Agriculture
_ Bureau of Agricultural Economics
Washington

July 7, 1926. 1:00 p. m. (E.T.)
REPORT OF THE JUNE 1 PIG SURVEY

The spring pig crop in the United States was 1.2 per cent smaller in 1926 than in 1925,
according to the semi-annual pig survey of the Department of Agriculture, made through the
rural carriers of the Post Office Department. The total estimated spring pig crop saved in the
United States in 1925 was about 54,000,000 head. An increase of 39 per cent in sows bred to.
farrow this fall over the number farrowed in the fall of 1925 is reported.

There was an increase of 1.7 per cent in the number of sows farrowing this spring over the
spring of 1925, but the average number of pigs saved per litter was smaller this year with a
resulting decrease i in pigs saved.

All groups of States, except the North Central West and the Far Western showed fewer
pigs saved this year than last. The largest decrease, of 15 per cent, was in the North Atlantic
States. Both Southern groups of StatesSouth Atlantic and South Centralshowed decreas-
es although the survey of December, 1925, indicated quite large increases in the number of

_ sows bred to farrow this spring.

A large increase in breeding for fall is shown by all groups, ranging from 20.8: per cent in
the North Atlantic to 68.8 per cent in the Far Western. Although there has been a wide spread
between sows reported bred in the June survey and sows reported farrowed in the following
December survey in previous years, high prices of hogs and the present outlook for feed sup-
plies may cause the intentions to be more nearly carried out this fall than in any previous fall.

air-slacked lime into all corners and on

As this is hard on the skin, we solved
the difficulty by fixing a gallon syrup

FEWER ACRES AND BETTER
FARMING ~
H. F. Browder, Pole Editor

T have too much land, said W. M-
Barrier of Morris county, Texas. I.
own seventy-four acres and that is far
too much for me to cultivate. I am
thinking of cutting some of it back to
pasture so that I can properly culti-
vate the remainder. When farmers
learn that they are trying to get over
too much ground they will perhaps at
the same time learn to let some of it
rest.

I bought this farm twelve years ago
and the neighbors said that I would
Starve on it, but I have had offer after
offer to buy it. Terracing and living
at hom dig the work for me. There
were some trees on the place when I
bought it and I have added more, but
the mistake I made was that I failed to
set out five ocres of apple trees when I
first came. Last. year I had one tree
that .bore eighteen bushels of apples
for Which I got $2 a bushel right here
at home. The wives of merchants in
Omaha came out and bought my ap-
ples because they were better than they
could get i nthe stores. We sold every
apple we had to spare. k

T had another tree that bore four- |
jmer, 7-8-26.

teen bushels and I got the same price
for them. That made me wish that I
hag five acres because [I could sell
them all. it takes care and work to
keep an orchard in good shape, but it
has always paid me. I now have nine
acres in orchard, and it is the best in-
vestment on the farm. Six varieties
of apples and as many of peaches, with
over 200 blu trees, constitute the or-
chard.

T have no- trouble in finding a mar-
ket, but we have had some with crook-.
ed commission men. One fellow got
nearly $70 worth of stuff from me and
then got away without paying for it.
I was the sucker and: paid for the ex-
perience. There are plenty of straight

dealers where the stuff can be market-
eq without getting tangled up

with
those crooks.

years and: have bought only ten bush-

debt and stayed out of debt myself. I

have given one mortgage and that was

cared for before it was due.

County Agent W. R. Morgan, who
was present, remarked that Mr. Bar-
riers son seemed interested in- the farm
and was eracking down. Mr. Bar-
rier grinned and said, Yes, I never
knew. a boy to take more interest in
the farm, and he is working hard and
knows and cares as much as I do.

- Then the story came out that a short
time ago Mr.. Barrier told the county
agent that he was bothered aboyt this
son. He said that the boy war to
duqit the farm and become a mechanic.
The county agent inquired into what
the father had done to make farm life
interesting to the boy and found that
there had been nothing other than food,
elothing: and education. Then he ad-
vised the father to give the boy an in-
terest in the erops and give him some
inducement to take an interest. eke

7 gave him a small cotton crop last
year, gave him half the melon crop, al-
so an interest in the peach crop, and
it transformed him. He has been
working just as hard as I an dhas been
interested. He wants to make things
so. In fact, the advice of the county
agent was sound and I am more than
glad I took it.

Do you see these pear trees? said

Mr. Barrier, pointing to some splendid

trees in the orchard. Well, they tell
me that blight ruins pears, but these
have escaped, and so far asl know. the
reason is that I put the salt, left from
curing my ~- meat, around them. I
spread it about the roots and worked
it into the ~ ground. ST hey oS seem to

IL SWEET IN HOT
WEATHER

Keeping milk sweet Sealomoui
is a summer problem on the farm.
Clean milk promptly cooled to a low
temperature will keep sweet and good
for a tong time. The more bacteria
that get into it and the warmer the
weather, the quicker milk will sour, un-
less cooled artificially. Few seem to
understand what clean milk means.
Milk drawn from a cow when dust is
flying in the air, milk from a cow with
a dirty udder or flanks, or into which
scurf and hair fall from the cow, or
milk drawn by a milker with dirty
hands and clothing is likety to be dir-
ty milk. Milk drawn into a bucket
or stored in vessels that have not been
properly washed and sierilizeq by boil-
ing water or live steam may in effect
also be dirty milk. Strainers that
have not been properly washed and
sterilized are-also a common cause of
arty miko

It is apparent that the dairymans Gt
bacterioligists idea of cleanliness means
much more than the general idea of
kitchen cleanliness.

Given clean milk, which can only be
obtained with certainty from a healthy
cow with due regard to every detail of
handling as outlined above, then the
temperature to which it. is promptly
cooled and kept determines largely the
length. of time it will keep good and
Sweet. No one need expect to keep
milk wholesome and sweet in hot
weather without strict attention to ev-
ery minute detail in handling from the
time it leaves a healthy cow. Most
cows are healthy and give elean, good
milk,

Of course, when ice is not available
it is difficult to cool milk and keep it
cool enough to keep it sweet for more
than a few hours in hot weather, but
if one has reasonably cool water con-
siderable can be qone toward cooling the
milk. If there is no ice or no water
that is reasonably cool, then it is all
the more important that the strictest
attention be given to keeping the milk
as elean as possible. Ptogressive Far-

pouriNe LICE AND MITES
Mrs. May Huskin

No matter how well you may feed
your chickens, if lice and mites get a
good start your work will go for naught.

Lice live on the scales of th feathers
the
bird.

Mites stay in the cracks and crevices
of the house, coming out only at night.
when they get on the birds, suck their
fill of blood and return to their hiding
place. Some call these parasites. red
mites, but they are red only when full
of blood.

Both lice and mites sa pthe vitality
of the hirds, so that their plumage
looks: dull and lifeless. The birds lose
strength, are unable to digest their
feed and finally die.

Wage Constant, Fight {

The only way in which to keep the
house clear of them is to wage a con-
tinuous fight. They thrive in dirt and
warm weather.

Keep the brood coops and laying
houses well cleaned and sprayed with
a good disinfectant. In my opinion
nothing is better than to soak the
roosts, supports and all, every other
week during the summer with the waste
oil that can be had for nothing from
garages. To this can be added a small
amount of earbolic. The nests must be
carefully looked after and clean straw
put in every now and then. :

Merely scraping off the dropping
boards does not mean cleaning, as the
mites are in the cracks and erevices
After cleaning the dropping boards an-
ply the oil, spraying or brushing it in.
You will have to do it more than once,
as the eggs soon produce a new crop
that carries the work right on. It is
always well to do this early in the morn-
ing, so that it has all day. to soak in
and little or no fumes remain to both-
er the birds.

Treat in Late Suner

Drring the late summer, all birds es
necially old ones, should be treated for
lice.

Dip birds in a solution of sodium flou-
ride before they go into heavy moit
It is the one best thing. whether you
dip them or qust them, and the former
is much easier to do, much more effec-
tive and less expensive. Shut the birds
up. the night before and dip the next
morning, if the sun is out good ard
strong. Ali that is necessary is to have
tepid water carefully measured in a tub.
To each gallon of water add_ three-

Bipping Operations

In qipping the birds it is best to hold
the wings over the back with the left
hand and submerge the bird in the so-
lution, leaving the head out, while the
feathers are thoroughly ruffled with
the other hand to allow the solution to
penetrate, to the skin. Then dip the
Wings until thoroughly wet. This done,
you then hold your fingers over the
birds bill and dip the head thoroughly.
Now hHft the bird out and carefully
squeeze the feathers so the solution
will drain down into the tub. This. is
done merely to save the solution. Throw
the birds loose and the sun will soon
dry them out.

Insanitary conditions about the poul-
such as damp fioors, poor
living. conditions, cold drafts and other
faults that easily may be corrected,
are predisposing facters towards dis-
ease, One of the first things to do
after these things are looked after
properly is to isolate any sick bird that
may appear in the flock.

The poultry industry is rapidly grow-
ing. This increase is noticed not only
in the large number of poultrymen,
but also in the intensity of production.
With an increase of birds on the farm
comes an increased disease hazard, and
the most successful method of combat-
ing these diseases is to prevent them
from occurring. :

Seasonal Diseases

Autumn weather usually marks out-
breaks of seasonal diseases, as pox,
roup, poultry typhoid, contagious bron-
chitis and pneumonia. The yearly mor-
tality among domesticated birds from
these diseases is yery large and is usu-
ally caused by the owner allowing such
diseases to become well established be-
fore taking steps to combat them.

Look over your flock each day itor
suspects. Confine the sick birds in sep-
arate quarters, and keep birds from
neighboring flocks in quarantine for a
week before putting them with the oth-
er birds, for they may. be carriers of
disease. If outbreaks occur cail on the ,
county agent for help, and if necessary
send a specimen to the poultry labora-
tory at your State agricultural college.

Tt URNIP-SOW ING TIME AGAIN

Purple: Toy Rutabaga and Yellow
Aberdeen turnips are two varieties that
will yield heavily and are good for both
food and feed. Sow in late June and
early July north of the Cotton Belt, in
July in the Piedmont and upper Coastal
Plains, and as late as mid-August in
the lower Coastal Plains. Preparation
should begin at least a month before
the seed are sowed it possible. Use not
less than 500 pounds of a fertilizer an-
alyzing 8 per cent fhosphorie acid, 4 to.
6 per cent nitrogen, and 5 to 8 per cent
potash. On well prepared land with a
good season i nthe ground, 1 1-2 to two
pounds will sow an acre with the rows
three feet apart. Thin to eight inches
with one plant to the hill and keep them
free of weeds. These varieties will
keep through the winter if covered with
six or eight inches of earth, or they may
be stored in cellars or any room where
the temperature remamins above freez-
