Ginilers Receive Checks for.Losses Suffered From Brokerage Failure
Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture
Tommy Irvin and Hugh Peterson,
Director of Governor Barnes' Office of
Intergovernmental Relations, recently
distributed checks totaling more than
$2;7 million to ginners who lost money as
the result of the failure of a major cotton
brokerage company in 1998.
The checks were distributed Dec. 20
in the Gonference Room at the Macon
Farmers' Market; 2055 Eisenhower
Parkway; in Macon, or by mail to those
farmers and ginners who were unable to
attend.
"Short of the damage caused by the

was .the largest disaster to strike the
cotton industry in the last century. More
than 23 million pounds of cotton were involved giving rise to some $14 million dollars in related losses," Irvin said.
"We worked to get $5 million included . in the 1998 Omnibus Spending Bill for an indemnity fund for cotton growers. With the ~elp of Gqvernor Barnes, the Georgia Legislature agreed to provi_de the matching funds needed to establish the Cottc_m Producers Indemnity Fund. This fund helped compensate cotton producers who had been devastated by the failure of this company," Irvin said. "This year, Governor Barnes recommended at my request that the General Assembly am~nd . the Inde~ity_La\Y t.o extend coverage to other farmers and ginners who suffered losses due to the 'cotton brokerage failure."

My daughter insists on using only
pressure treate~ wood products for. every
do-it-yourself project we try. Please,
explain when and where pressure treated
wood products should be used.
Pressure-treated lumber shoUid be
used anywhere you think termites or
decay might be .a problem. Outdoor
projects sud~ as m~boxes, lampposts,
.fences, decks, sheds, and benches, are
obvious examples of items that should
be constructed with treated wood
products. In fact you should consider
using pressure treated wood products in
any project that brings wood in contact
with soil or moisture.

. What causes ground beef patties to
shrink while cooking?
All . meat ~II shrink in size and
weight during cooking. The amount of
shrinkage will depend on its fat and
moisture content, the temperature at
which the meat is cooked, and how long
it is cooked. Basically, the higher the
cooking temperature, ~e more the meat
will shrink. Cooking ground beef at
moderate temperatures will reduce
shrinkage and help retain juices and
flavor. Over cooking ground beefor any
meat results in more shrinkage and a
dry, less flavorful product.
How
can
I
tell
***
if food
is
safe
to
eat?
, Unfortunately, it is . not always
possible to tell by taste, looks, or odor of
food if it is safe to eat. Meat, poultry,
and dairy products, left at room
temperature (even for short periods)
allow bacteria to grow to dangerous
levels. Even at these levels some
bacteria seldom change the taste, odor,
or looks of food. H you know that a food
item that requires refrigeration has
been left out of the refrigerator for more
than 2 hours, throw it out.
*** .
I received my termite annual inspection
notice yesterday and I'm not happy. The
rate went up another $25. Can they legally
raise the cost of this service every year?
.The answer to that question depends
on the terms and conditions of your
termite contract. There are no standard
termite contracts. . However, this
department does require all termite
contracts to show the effective date, the
period of guarantee, the pest to be
controlled, the job price, and the
inspection service fee arid schedule.
Read yoU.. contract. It sho'uld answer
all of your questions. You can contact '
areas our Structural Pest Control office f~r
