The checks were distributed Dec. 20 in the Gonference Room at the Macon Farmers' Market; 2055 Eisenhower Parkway; in Macon, or by mail to those farmers and ginners who were unable to attend. "Short of the damage caused by the boll the weevil :fcii.1ui-e oafn..dthiws-ebarthoekre-~raeglaetecdomlopssaensy. was .the largest disaster to strike the cotton industry in the last century. More than 23 million pounds of cotton were involved giving rise to some $14 million dollars in related losses," Irvin said. "We worked to get $5 million included . in the 1998 Omnibus Spending Bill for an indemnity fund for cotton growers. With the ~elp of Gqvernor Barnes, the Georgia Legislature agreed to provi_de the matching funds needed to establish the Cottc_m Producers Indemnity Fund. This fund helped compensate cotton producers who had been devastated by the failure of this company," Irvin said. "This year, Governor Barnes recommended at my request that the General Assembly am~nd . the Inde~ity_La\Y t.o extend coverage to other farmers and ginners who suffered losses due to the 'cotton brokerage failure." .Georgia Teachers ~eceive Grants Foi;- Agricultural Education Projec~s Peanu.t Farm Show .'
