Holidays Rekindle Childhood Me01ories
Copyright 1999
Tommy Irvin Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture
The Christmas holidays always bring back fond memories of my boyhood days of the mid 30s. Even though my parents were sharecroppers, our excitement was not dampened by our financial status. I guess you could say we were poor and just didn't know it. It seems like only yesterday that my brothers and I (my sisters were not born yet) stretched out in front of the fireplace with the Sears Roebuck catalog, looking at all the shiny toys and factorymade clothes. It was called the wish book. That catalog had the most worn pages of any book in our house. Wrapped in our handmade stitched quilts we would slowly tum each page, racing to be the first to point to an item and lay claim to it. It was
a game we played year after year. I would
drift off to sleep and dream of riding
my brand new store-bought
red wagon down our dirt
road on Christmas
morning.
By the second
week
of
December, Daddy
would take us to
the woods in the
back of the house and
cut down our Christmas tree. We didn't get
it earlier because the fireplace would dry it
out. I can see my Daddy now nailing
together two pieces of split wood from the
woodpile as a base for the tree. We didn't
have store-bought ornaments or electric
lightS on our kee, but it was beautiful with
the ones we made. Our ornaments included
I
stringed popcorn, anything we
could find in the woods
including ivy, moss, holly
with the red berries
attached,
wild
weeds that had
been frost-bitten,
broomstraw and
eggshells
(a
couple months
before Christmas,
Mama would start
saving the shells from where she had
boiled eggs so we could crush them up
really small and sprinkle them on the tree
for snowflakes). And if we were fortunate,
sometimes we had little candy canes. We
would sit and marvel at our tree at night as
it glittered and glowed from the candle in
the window and the oil-burning lamp
sitting on the mantel. Although daily chores-chopping
kindling, preparing the field, and tending to the few animals we had-continued for us boys and my Daddy while mama took care of household chores, our house looked like Christmas and the aroma of the Season filled it. We would have mistletoe straight from the woods in the doorway and drape fresh garland on the mantelpiece along with the biggest sock Daddy had. Our wreaths were made from com shucks and little ears of Indian com that so typified the . season.
There was something magical about the aromas that came from our wood burnillg stove and fireplace, or maybe it was just my Mama's preparations and seasonings. All I know, it's been a long time since I've had bread pudding packed with raisins and
