March is the best time to put in new

bramble plants, including blackberry and

raspberry.

Kiowa is one of several new varieties of

"erect" blackberries, as growers prune these

types into a hedge row without using a

trellis.

"We recommend growers prune these

types several times during the summer,"

Krewer said. These prunings result in a

thick hedge of blackberries with the fruit on

the outside of the bush and away from the

thorns.

Developed blackberry plants are less

ferocious than the. wild types found in

woods or fields. Basically, blackberries are

weeds.

"And you have to manage them as

such," he said. "You have to keep them

pruned and the row middles mowed, or they

can take over your yard or garden quickly."

"Kiowa appears to be an excellent

blackberry for both home gardens and pick-

your-own fruit operations in Georgia,"

Krewer said.

But don't look for these monster berries

the first year after planting, as blackberries

take two years to fruit and three years to

produce a full crop.

From root cuttings or plants set during

the winter, the plants grow canes. These

canes grow one year, then fruit and die the

next year. While that year's canes are

There is a second track for those who believe they have. evidence of extreme wrongdoing. These cases must be welldocumented, and farmers must justify a larger pay-out. When a farmer meets this standard, this track allows for a tailored settlement that will be determined by a third party.
Farmers are not required to take part in this settlement process. Instead, they can also choose to continue their individual cases in court or utilize USDA's administrative process.
Notices will be sent out to all members of the class making them aware of their options under this settlement. Once the final settlement is signed, the cases will begin to be processed.

There are two tracks to the process. The first track allows those who meet the c~ass definition and who can provide ~tibstantial evidence of discrimination to

Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to advertise in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i:e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (i.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in. telephone directories or ''yellow pages'', etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/permits/registrations. The editor has the authority to designate the length

taken via telephone. Ads are computer referenced by telephone number, so it is essential that the advertiser's telephone number be submitted with . each ad. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact on the face of the advertisement furnished to the BULLETIN. There is a 20-word limit for advertisements; name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included in the 20-word limit. The MARKET BULLETIN reserves the right to edit notices.
