Georgia's Pecan Production Down
The December 1 crop production forecast shows pecan production significantly lower and cotton remained unchanged, according to the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service. Dry weather and hurricanes proved too much for pecans to overcome, as production is considerably below the October 1 forecast.
Georgia's cotton production is expected to total 1,400,000 bales, the same as the November forecast, but 27 percent less than last year. Harvested acreage also remains unchanged from earlier estimates at 1,300,000 acres. Harvest as of December 6 was 89 percent complete, slightly ahead of the five-year average. Yields are expected to average 517 pounds per harvested acre, unchanged from last month, but 129 pounds below last year.
Pecan production for 1998 is forecast ai 40 million pounds, twenty million less than the previous projection in October and 65 million pounds less than last year. The long summer drought and two September hurricanes wreaked havoc on the 1998 crop, thus causing the decline in production. Improved varieties are expected to total 34 million pounds, dO\yn 16 million from the previous estimate. Native and seedling varieties are down 4 million pounds from the October forecast. Harvest, as of December 6, was 85 percent complete, well ahead of the normal pace.

USDA Announces 1999 Tobacco Quota
The U.S. Department of Agriculture last week announced the provisions of the 1999 flue-cured tobacco program. The national marketing quota is 666.2 million pounds, down from the 1998 quota of 807.6 million pounds.
For each farm the 1999 basic quota will decrease approximately 18 percent from 1998. The national average yield
Ga. National Fair
Wins Two Awards
The "Tradition Continued" for the Georgia National Fair when it won top honors for its agricultural programs at the annual convention of the International Association of Fairs and Expositions (IAFE).
"These awards place the Georgia National Fair in a position of prominence
within the fair industry," said James E.
Sutherland, chairman, Georgia Agricultural Exposition Authority. "We're proud and honored by this international acclaim and recognition."
The Fair won awards for the following: Outstanding Overall Program for Competitive Agricultural Exhibitors; and Outstanding Video of Overall Agricultural Program.
"Agricultural programs and competitive exhibits are the backbone of the Georgia National Fair," said Michael A. Froehlieh, executive director, Georgia National Fair. "To be singled out as a leading agricultural fair confirms the Georgia National Fair and the state of Georgia's commitment to agriculture, education, and youth in Georgia.
Since 1992, the Georgia National Fair has won 22 IAFE awards for agricultural programs and competitive exhibits.
The Georgia National Fair competed against other fairs whose annual attendance ranges from 250,001 to 500,000. The estimated attendance for the 1998 Georgia National Fair was 361,125. The IAFE has more than 3,200 member fairs and expositions throughout the U.S. and the world.
goal remains unchanged at 2,088 pounds per acre. National acreage allotment for the 1999 crop is 319,061 acres, down from the 1998 allotment of 386,782 acres. The price support level for the 1999 crop is $1.632 per pound, up 0.4 cent from 1998. The effective quota is expected to be about 667 million pounds or 19 percent below 1998.
Georgia flue-cured tobacco growers experienced a 17 percent decrease in the basic quota for 1998 as compared to 1997. The effective quota was decreased by -8.5 percent as a result of the under production and under-marketings from the 1997 season. The 1998 support price of $162.90 per hundredweight was an increase of $0.80 per hundredweight over that of the 1997 price of $162.1 per hundredweight. Effective quota for Georgia was placed at 93.7 million pounds.
In 1998, Georgia net producer sales totaled 90,240,924 pounds, which sold for an average price of $170.8 per hundredweight and yielded total farmer reaeipts of $154,128,401. The price was a decrease of $0.32 per hundredweight from the 1997 average of $171.12 per hundredweight. The average sale price was $7.90 per hundredweight above the average support price of $162.90 per
hundredweight for the season. Harvested acres for 1998 are
estimated at 42,000. Average production is expected to be approximately 2, 169 pounds per acre. Georgia tobacco growers placed approximately 8.6 percent of net sales under loan to the Flue-Cured Tobacco Stabilization Corporation. This was up 2.0 percent from 6.62 percent delivered in 1997.
New Beetles Add to Ga. Farmers' Worries
Georgia's wheat and grain farmers have one more thing to worry about: Cereal leaf beetles are moving across the state.
These little beetles eat the leaves in small grains and can eat about 15 percent of the crop yield. Fortunately for Georgia farmers, it's not that bad yet.
"We first round cereal leaf beetles north of Rome in 1989. And in that area, it's causing problems," said David Buntin, a University of Georgia entomologist at the Georgia Experiment Station in Griffin. "Now we're finding
