Wet Fall Weather Equals
Small Ga. Wheat Crop
Unusually wet fall weather has Georgia wheat farmers planting their smallest crops in almost 20 years, according to a University of Georgia agronomist.
"We're hoping farmers can get 250,000 to 280,000 acres planted this
year," said Dewey Lee, an extension
agronomist with the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. "That's just about two-thirds of last year's 400,000-acre crop."
Not since the 1979 crop of only 210,000 acres have wheat farmers planted such a small crop.
Although Georgia farmers never raise enough wheat to significantly affect the wholesale price of wheat and flour on international markets, a half crop will affect the farmers.
"There will certainly be a loss of farm income," Lee said.
George Shumaker, a CAES economist, estimates Georgia wheat farmers will lose about $18 million in total income from this short crop. "If it's not planted, they can't harvest it," he said.
Shumaker based the loss estimate on how much farmers would earn if they had been able to plant and harvest a full crop. That loss doesn't include the loss of wages to farm workers and extra help at millers, either.
Wet weather from late September through December has farmers still trying to harvest cotton and soybean fields. Until they can get those crops out of the fields, wheat and other small grains can't be planted. Even in harvested fields, Lee said the saturated, soggy soil won't support the weight of planting equipment.
"We're at the point now, that I'm telling farmers that if they can't get wheat planted before the third week of December, to not even try to get in there," Lee said. After that point, the cost to grow and manage the crop well is greater' than the potential income, and farmers could actually lose money.
He explains that in the seven to 14 days after the'ideal planting window for wheat, the yield potential drops by 15 to 20 percent. From 15 to 21 days after the planting window, the potential yield drops by almost half. "That's true no matter what variety you plant," he said.
With less than half of Georgia's typical crop to buy and use next spring; flour millers across the Southeast will have to buy wheat from other areas. Lee said Georgia farmers plant mostly soft, red winter wheat. This wheat is milled into flour used in soft baked goods like doughnuts, cookies and cakes.

in smaller pots, according to the University of Georgia Extension Service. Scientists grew "Better Bush" tomatoes in 3.5-inch and 11inch plastic pots for 12 weeks. They found they could get roughly twice as much fruit from plants in the smaller pots. Those plants were somewhat dwarfed, and theirfruits were either slightly smaller or less abundant than those on unstressed plants. But the overall yield per area was actually greater since three small plants could fit into the same space as one large plant. There was a trick, though, to getting good yields from plants in smaller pots: they had to get plenty of water and nutrition. The tomatoes in _this experiment were fed and watered three to six times a day.

Apply manure or compost to your garden soil and tum it under now to get the soil in good shape for spring planting.
If you did not have soil tests done in the fall, take samples now. This will allow time to receive the test results and make preparations for spring planting.
Now is a good time for planting rhododendron, azalea and other evergreen or flowering ~hrubs.
Most ornamental trees and shrubs can be pruned this month with the exception of spring-flowering trees and shrubs. Fruit trees require more specialized attention, dependent upon what you are growing. Consult your local county Cooperative Extension Service office for more details on pruning fruit trees.
Nandinas can be kept full by pruning them anytime between now and early spring. Cut out one-third of the canes (choose the oldest ones) completely each year. This will encourage new canes to sprout at the base.
Although it may be cold outside, compost piles stay warm and active as bacteria work to decompose leaves, grass clippings and other organic materials. But the decomposition will slow down greatly or even stop if the pile gets dry. To make certain this does not happen, let a sprinkler or soaker hose run on the pile for a couple of hours every two to three weeks.

PLANT NUTS Fresh nuts of hickory, butternut and black walnut germinate readily if planted outdoors about one inch deep, according to the University of Georgia Extension Service. The alternating freezing. and thawing splits their hard shells and allows the roots to emerge. A small, wire cage placed over the nut will mark where you planted them..It will keep the squirrels from digging up the seeds, too.

Free Mulch Offered To DeKalb Residents
Just In time for DeKalb County residents to winterize their garden beds, the DeKalb Sanitation Department is offering free mulch from ground-up trees and yard trimming at a new site on Camp Circle off Memorial Drive, Stone Mountain. .Citizens may drive in and load up during daylight hours, seven days a week. Free mulch also is available during the day at DeKalb County's Seminole Landfill on Clevemont Road.
Natural mulch is good cover for gardens. It keeps weeds down, nourishes the soil as it decomposes, helps the soil to hold moisture and protects plants by keeping the soil temperature consistent.
For more information or directions to the sites, call the DeKalb County Extension Service at (404)371-2821.

USDA Expands Canola Insurance Program

u.s. Agriculture Secretary Dan
Glickman said recently that the crop insurance program for canola has been expanded.
"Our goal is to convert crops covered by the Non-Insured Assistance Program (NAP) into insurance programs as soon as sufficient actuarial information becomes available," said Glickman.
"Under the NAP, producers receive ilssistance only if there is an area loss. Higher levels of protection are available under insurance plans, and individual losses qualify for payment." He added that insurance provides better protection, enabling producers to better manage their risk.
Ga. Horse Council
Schetlules Meeting
Horse owners are invited to attend a meeting of the Georgia Horse Council (GHC) Jan. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at Chicopee Woods Agricultural Center in Hall County. The GHC is hosting the gathering for the primary purpose of correctly focusing the organization on issues the state's equine community feels are important on a local, regional and statewide basis. The session also will provide a chance for the horse-owning community to share their visions for the industry, to explore the concept of forming regional GHC chapters, and to get acquainted with other area horse owners.
The meeting, which includes a free dinner, will be at the Chicopee Woods activity building, 1855 Calvary Church Rd. in Gainesville. For more information, call (770) 531-6855.
Wheat Crop
(Continued From Page 1)
"A lot ofGeorgia's wheat ends up on Georgia families' tables," said Lee. "But, this year, that won't be the case." The Georgia shortage will force millers to bring more wheat in from other areas, Lee said. He said the farmer's and miller's problems will have little to no effect on the price of baked goods for consumers.
But reduced acreage is just one problem wheat farmers face. Soggy fields make growing wheat and other small grains more difficult.
"Continued wet weather will really tax farmers' management," Lee said. "They'll have to carefully time nutrient applications and manage to increase tillers." Rain can wash away pesticides, nitrogen or other nutrients, too.
Wet soil also limits wheat growth. Soggy soil keeps oxygen away from roots, preventing good root system development. Without good roots, the plant can't absorb nutrients and produce enough heads for high yields.
"It's already started out as a tough year for small grain producers in Georgia," Lee said. "All we can do now is hope the weather cooperates so the wheat that is planted can produce a good crop."

The canola pilot insurance program was initiated in selected counties of Idaho, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, and Washington in 1995. Selected fall seeded counties in Oregon, Idaho and Georgia were added in 1997. Participation has varied from 60 to 77 percent of the insurable acreage.
The announcement follows publication in the Federal Register of a regulation converting the canola pilot program into a permanent program.

What is the Ag Census? The census of agriculture is a complete accounting of U.S. agricultural production, and it is the only source of uniform, comprehensive agricultural data for every county in the nation. The census includes as a farm every place from which $1,000 or more of agricultural products were produced and sold or normally would have been sold during the census year. The census of agriculture is taken every five years covering the years ending in "2" and "7." Uses of Census Data Agribusinesses use the information to develop market strategies and to determine the most effective locations for service to agricultural producers. Farm organizations use census data to evaluate and propose programs and policies that can help agricultural producers. Elected representatives use the information to develop programs to protect and promote U.S. agriculture. Public and private analysts make extensive use of census data in making projections and evaluating results of events and programs. Rural electric companies use census data to forecast future energy needs for agricultural producers and their communities. . Colleges and universities use the data in research programs to develop new and improved methods to increase agricultural production. State departments of agriculture use census data to plan for operations during drought, and emergency outbreaks of dis: eases or infestation of pests.

Check Gutters Check house gutters for fallen leaves, needles and twigs, according to .the University of Georgia Extension Service. Heavy fall rains will quickly overflow clogged gutters, possibly damaging foundation plants below them.

Feed Wisteria Fertilize wisteria after leaves have fallen, according to the University of Georgia Extension Service. That will help to avoid excess top growth and lead to more blooms next spring
