GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE - TOMMY IRVIN,COMMISSIONER

Vol. ga, No. 28_______________ __
Deadline Approaches
For Contract Sign-up
Georgia farmers and landowners who have not signed up for Production Flexibility Contracts are urged to do so before July 12. Under the 1996 Farm Bill, the new contracts provide market transition payments to farmers for specified crops grown during the next seven years.
During the first 25 days of the signup, only 35 percent of eligible farmers had enrolled. Regardless of the size of their farm operation, producers and landowners who have not signed up for contracts should contact their local. Farm Service Agency office immediately.
Remember: the final date for signup is July 12, 1996. This is a one-time signup, and the deadline will not be extended. No appeals to enroll in the program will be allowed for failure to enroll.

I know the Georgia Department of Agriculture licenses kennels. How do you determine an operation is a kennel?
Under Georgia lawj a kennel is defined as any establishment, other than an animal shelter, where dogs and cats are maintained for boarding, holding, training, or similar purposes for a fee or compensation.
It seems that everything is becoming more automated, including the use of scan ners in grocery stores to record the prices on products. I always watch closely to make sure I am charged the correct amount, but is there anyone checking these scanners for accuracy?
Sanitarians with the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Consumer Protection Division spot check prices on scanners during their routine inspection of grocery stores. Problems with scan ners should be reported to this division by calling (404) 656-3621 (Metro Atlanta) or 1-800-282-5852 (toll-free, statewide).

I am interested in signing up some of my forest acreage in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). Does your agency handle this?
The CRP program is administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Consolidated Farm Service Agency. For more information on sign-up require ments, contact your local CFSA office.
Ifyou have problems or questions con cerning products or services regulated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, write: Consumer Services, Room 226, Agriculture Building, 19 M.L. King, Jr., Dr., Atlanta, Georgia 30334-4201, or call toll-free, 1-800-282-5852 (statewide), or in metro Atlanta, 404-656-3645.

Pick-Your-Own Farms Alternative to Grocery Stores and Markets

It's time to pick your own fruits and vegetables in Georgia, as evidenced by the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin special pick-your-own list pub lished on pages 6-7.
Japanese Beetles Damage
Georgia Lawns, Gardens
Summer has now arrived and so has the Japanese beetle, one of the more dreaded pests for Southern gardeners.
Japanese beetles spend most the year as an underground grub feeding on the roots of turf grasses. Beginning in late May or early June, the adult beetles
emerge and begin feeding on a variety of ornamental plants, fruit trees and garden vegetables through about mid-July. The beetles do not like plants with thick, waxy leaves, but they will consume just about any other kind of plant foliage. If Japanese beetles have been feeding on foliage, all that will remain is the "skeletal" structure of the leaves. The beetles are most active on warm, clear days when the temperature ranges between 85 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit. If they are around, Japanese beetles will be easy to spot due to their distinctive appearance. Adult beetles are about.onehalf inch in length with copper-brown colored wings covering a metallic-green, oval-shaped body. They also have five small tufts of white hair along the side of each wing, as well as tufts of white hair at the base of each wing. Insecticides containing Sevin will control the beetles that eat treated plants; however, since the beetles move around, you may have to keep applying the pesti cide for several weeks to ensure control. Also, Sevin is toxic to. bees which polli nate crops, so do not use the dust form on flowering crops visited by bees. For orna mentals and non-food crops, systemic insecticides, such as dimethoate (Cygon) or acephate (Orthene) will provide longlasting protection and control other insects as well. Japanese beetle traps, sold at lawn and garden supply outlets, can be used to detect and control the pests and to deter mine when and if other control measures

Although fresh produce also is avail able at state farmers' markets, roadside stands, grocery stores and supermarkets, some people still enjoy doing their own picking. If your family is planning to take a trip to a pick-your-own produce farm this year, the following factors should be considered to ensure you get the most from your visit.
Consider the travel distance to the farm. Since you must supply your own labor for picking, it might not be worth traveling a great distance, even if the prices are lower than retail. If the trip is planned more as a fun outing, then dis tance may not be important to you.
Price should be considered. If the prices are not indicated in an advertise ment or listing, then call to ask about price and availability before making a trip.
Customers arriving at the site should note and obey all rules and regulations

posted by the owners. Although the farm owners have several advantages in allow ing customers to pick their own fruits and vegetables, they also take the risk that their crops may be damaged by uncon cerned, careless or inexperienced con sumers. By following the owner's guide lines for picking, consumers will help ensure they will have a safe and enjoy able harvest while helping to protect the

Tomato: Fruit or Vegetable?

You Say Tomato, I Say Tomato Tomatoes are one of the most popu lar and widely used foods, but for years they've suffered from an identity crisis. How is the word pronounced? Is a toma to a fruit or a vegetable? Either pronunciation is correct, and technically, a tomato is a fruit -- a berry to be exact. In any case, tomatoes are low in fat and calories, cholesterol free and a good source of vitamins A and C. One medium tomato contains 35 calories. Georgia tomatoes are available much of the year, from mid-May through midNovember. Tomatoes are grown in south west Georgia and are one of the state's top cash crops.

cracks near the stem scar. Avoid toma toes with soft spots, depressed areas or surface mold.
If tomatoes need ripening, store them at room temperature. Don't store tomatoes in the refrigerator unless they're fully ripe. The cold temperatures might keep them from ripening. Store tomatoes stem-up, to avoid bruising the shoulders.
Best Ways to Enjoy Tomatoes Tomatoes are a must for tossed sal ads. Sliced tomatoes add taste and nutri tion to all kinds of sandwiches.

Bulletin Schedules to Change During Olympic Games

A Buyer's Guide to Tomatoes Look for well-formed tomatoes that are smooth, ripe and blemish-free. Fully ripe tomatoes will be a consistent, rich red color and will be slightly soft. For tomatoes not quite fully ripe, look for color ranging from pink to light red and firm texture. Tomatoes with the stems attached lose moisture more slowly and stay fresh longer. Avoid overripe and bruised tomatoes which are soft and watery. Tomatoes should not have green or yellow areas or

Farmers & Consumers Market Bulletin Advertising Guidelines

All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) sub mitted for sale through the BUL LETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be pro duced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from mate rials on his/her own farming opera tion, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealer ships or other commercial enterpris es are not allowed to advertise in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass mar ket; handling large quantities of prod uct for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quanti ties); supported by advertisement (i.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "'business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indi cators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and hold ing regulatory licenses/permits/regis trations. The editor has the authority to des ignate the length of ads and the num ber of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BUL LETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placeekby any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. Each notice submitted for publi cation must be in writing, legible, on a single sheet of paper separate from

Items for sale or services offered in any notice must conform to all laws and regulations covering sale and movement of the same. Ads for some categories must meet certain requirements. Advertisers are advised to review requirements under ad categories before submitting their notices. Note; Due to space limitations ad guide lines cannot be listed in the BUL LETIN each week. Advertisers who have questions concerning these guidelines may call 1 -800-282-5852, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday, or write: Market Bulletin, Georgia Department of Agriculture, 19 MLK Jr. Drive, Atlanta, GA 30334. Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies in writing on the notice that the ad is to be published more than one week. Ads may be published consecutively up to a max imum of four (4) weeks. A new notice must be submitted after each maxi mum 4-week period if the adver tiser wants the advertisement to continue. Ads cannot be taken via telephone. Ads are computer referenced by telephone number, so it is essential that the advertiser's telephone num ber be submitted with each ad. Advertisers who do not want a tele phone number printed in their ads should note this fact on the face of the advertisement furnished to the BULLETIN. There is a 20-word limit for adver tisements; name, town, phone num ber or name and complete address must be included in the 20-word limit. The MARKET BULLETIN reserves the right to edit notices. Georgia residents only may adver

Ga.'s Pine Top Farm Listed on Register
The Pine Top Farm in McDuffie County recently was listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Pine Top Farm, a former agricultur al farm, is now used as a horse training farm, consisting of a main house, tenant houses and bams at its center, with gen tly rolling fields and pastures surround ing. The two-story brick Colonial Revival main house was built in 1935 on an earlier house site and features a deco rative front portico. The house retains its original materials, including canvas ceil ings on the first floor. Near the main house is a modern garage, original wooden garage, landscaped grounds, historic Watson cemetery, and a pump house.
Pine Top Farm is considered signif icant in agriculture because it is an intact farm owned by the same family for seven generations. It has been awarded Centennial Farm status for this continu ity, representing much of the history of southern agriculture with its numerous outbuildings which reflect all the neces sary activities to keep a farm running. The farm is considered significant in architecture because it includes a large number and variety of historic farmrelated dwelling houses and outbuildings in their original condition, including ver nacular bams and tenant houses, as well as the main house.
The National Register is the federal government's official list of historic buildings, structures, sites, objects, and districts worthy of preservation. A list ing in the National Register recognizes a property's significance and ensures that the property will be taken into account in the planning of federally-funded or licensed projects. In addition, owners of income-producing National Register properties may be eligible for rehabilita tion tax incentives.
For more information on the National Register or other preservation programs, contact the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources at (404) 656-2840.
Japanese Beetles

are .needed. Most of these traps contain a pheromone (a substance that attracts bee tles for mating) and will draw beetles to the area around the trap; therefore, locate the traps away from plants that are being attacked by the insects.
If you have a problem with Japanese beetles, you should consider treating your lawn to kill underground grubs before they emerge as adult beetles next sum mer. In August or September, check the turf for signs of grubs. If you find more than ten white beetle grubs per foot, or if the turf can be rolled back like a carpet, treat the lawn with milky spore disease. This bacteria will destroy the grubs in the soil, but will not harm people, animals, birds, or your lawn and plants. Milky spore can be ordered from some nursery catalogs or purchased at nurseries and lawn and garden centers.
Another alternative is to apply a gran ular pesticide to the turf to reduce the grub population.

farm property. Some farms have rules concerning the
use of containers. Although a few farmers provide receptacles for picking and carry ing produce home, others furnish only bas kets or buckets for picking. Some fann operations do not provide containers at all.
If you carry your own containers, keep in mind the crops you will be harvesting. For instance, you will need smaller pick ing and transporting containers for berries in order to minimize bruising. When picking larger fruits and vegetables, con sider the weight of a full container. If you have a large container, such as a bushel basket, you may get tired of carrying it around the field or orchard and to the check-out area.
When you get to the picking site, look for the location of check-in and check-out areas. Before you start picking, note whether you will be charged according to weight, volume or count. Also, inquire if there is a minimum quantity requirement.
' If you are harvesting your own fruits and vegetables for the first time, or you are new to a particular operation, ask questions when you need help. This will ensure you harvest the crop properly, and it may save you from a possible dispute with the owner or another customer.
Some operations have field supervisors or other employees that wear distinctive clothing, such as a cap or shirt, to make them easily recognizable. These individuals can help guide you to crops of harvestable quality. They also can let you know which crops, fields or rows are off limits.

Picking fields or orchards may be located a distance from the parking areas. If this poses a problem for you, check in advance to find out if the farm provides transportation to and from the picking areas.
Some farms have more accomodations for customers than others, so ask about the availability of drinking water, restroom facilities and rest areas.
Field conditions, service and friendli ness of the operators are some factors you may want to observe to help you deter mine if a return visit is desirable.
Pick your own farms offer many advantages to both consumers and pro ducers. If consumers are willing to work with farm operators and employees, both parties can be assured of a safe and prof itable harvest.

Don't plant fruit trees in low areas if you can avoid it, say horticulturists with the University of Georgia Extension Service. Cold air settles into low areas, where spring frost kills young flowers or fruit.
