Hunters for Hungry Program Doubles Venison Donation Thousands of hungry people through
out the state received warm, nutritious meals over the holiday season thanks to the help of Georgia hunters.
These hunters donated 274 deer, yield ing a total of 8,944 pounds of ground venison, during the two weekends desig nated as Hunters for the Hungry collec tion periods last fall. This compares to 130 deer (3,912 pounds of venison) donated in 1994.
The program is sponsored by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the Georgia Department of Corrections, the Georgia Department of Agriculture and the Georgia Wildlife Federation.
Here's how the program works: Wildlife Resources Division personnel collect field-dressed deer from hunters at one of several designated locations dur ing the collection periods. In exchange for their donation, hunters received a Hunters for the Hungry hat provided by the Georgia Wildlife Federation.
After each collection weekend, the deer are transported in refrigerated tracks to the Department of Corrections cold storage meat processing plant in Milledgeville. Prisoners process the deer into ground venison and pack it into 10-

A fast-flowing stream and series of pools at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia provide the centerpiece about which the newly-opened 3.3 acre, $2.2 million International Garden is designed. The new garden is located next to the Visitor Center, and features 11 special coUections which trace the global interrelationship of man and plants.

Do you have the number for the Poison Control Center in Atlanta? I have small chil

dren and want to keep it handy in case I need it.

Yes, we do. The local number for the metro Atlanta area is 404-616-9000; and the

statewide toll-free number is 1-800-282-5846. They also have a T.T.Y. for the deaf

which is 404-616-9287.

I remember reading somewhere that it's not safe to bum Christmas wrapping paper

and ribbons in the fireplace. We have burned them in the past and have not experienced

any problems. Is there really any danger in doing this?

It could pose a safety hazard because some ribbons, decorations and wrapping

paper, especially foil-type paper, contain plastics that release poisonous gases when

burned. Wrappings ignite quickly and burn vigorously and this could result in a

flash fire when burned indoors.

ATTENTION READERS: If you would like a reply to your letter, please include your name and complete address so we can respond. You can also give a daytime phone num ber if you can be conveniently reached during the day. We cannot publish every letter we receive. This column does not print names or addresses.
If you have problems or questions concerning products or services regulated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, write: Consumer Services, Room 226, Agriculture Building, 19 M.L. King, Jr. Dr., Atlanta, GA 30334-4201, or call toll-free 1-800-2825852 (statewide), or in metro Atlanta, 656-3645.

1996 Poultry Exposition Planned for Jan. 24-26

The 48th Annual 1996 International Poultry Exposition, sponsored by the Southeastern Poultry and Egg Association, will be held Jan. 24-26 in the World Congress Center in Atlanta.
The 1995 Exposition set new records in both attendance and exhibits, as more than 24,000 industry decision-makers registered for the show. Included were 4,540 international visitors from 90 nations around the world.
Ga. Blueberry Meeting
Set for Jan. 23 in Alma
The 1996 Georgia Blueberry Meeting is planned for Jan. 23 at Alma High School in Alma, Ga.
Programs include: "Blueberry Gall Midge;" "Padding Blueberry Harvesters;" "Hinson Curtains for Blueberry Harvesters;" "New Findings on Gibberellic Acid;" "Southern Highbush Breeding in Florida, `Star,' `Southmoon,' and other New Cultivars;" "Speculations on Fertilization;" "Postharvest Handling and Some Comments on Mummyberry;" "Mummyberry;" "Aerial Spraying and Homemade Sprayers for Mummyberry Control;" "Funginex Situation;" and "Outlook for Fresh Packing for the South."
Pregistration postmarked before Jan. 16 is $13. After Jan. 16, late registration is $16.
For more information, call Bacon County Extension Service at (912) 6325601 or the Extension Horticulture Department at (912) 386-3410. Registration forms may be sent to Bacon County Extension Service, P.O. Box 1985, Alma, GA 31510-1985.

Another record last year saw 1,017 exhibiting companies filling 16 acres of the World Congress Center with the latest equipment, supphes and services used in the production and processing of poultry and eggs.
"We expect an even bigger and better Exposition in 1996," said Southeastern Chairman Chet Austin of Marietta. "The groundwork for 1996 began immmediately after the 1995 show, and as we get nearer the `96 event, planning and prepa ration are moving at a rapid pace."
Austin added that the current rate of space reservations point to more exhibitors and a larger display area than in 1995. "Fortunately, the expansion of the Congress Center a few years ago per mits the continued growth of the Exposition," he said.
The 1996 Exposition begins with the opening ceremonies at 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning. Exhibits open at 9:30 a.m. with the remainder of the day reserved for previewing the exhibit floor. Industry education programs are sched uled Thursday and Friday, to ran concur rently with the exhibits, which are open full-time all three days.
"The International Poultry Exposition is the annual preeminent event for the world-wide poultry industry," said Austin. "It is where supplier companies introduce their new products, and it is where industry leaders meet to stay informed. It is the one place on earth to see everything imaginable used to pro duce poultry and eggs and to visit with the largest single gathering of poultry people."
