GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TOMMY IRVIN,COMMISSIONER

Vol. 78, No. 1
ag consumer line...
My question is in reference to a previ ous Ag Line question about the most pop ular fresh fruits in this country. You stat ed that the most popular one is bananas, apples are second and oranges third. What about tomatoes? I eat more of them fresh than any other fruit.
Botanically, the tomato is a fruit, but it is considered a vegetable and generally used as one. One source of information about tomatoes stated that the average American consumes more than 17 pounds of fresh tomatoes each year. By comparison, we eat the follow ing amounts of these fresh fruits annu ally: more than 25 pounds of bananas, 20 pounds of apples and 14 pounds of oranges. A large number of tomatoes are grown in home gardens, so it is hard to determine exactly how many fresh tomatoes are consumed in this country.
If you have problems or questions con cerning products or services regulated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, write: Consumer Services, Room 226, Agriculture Building, 19 M.L. King, Jr. Dr., Atlanta, Georgia 30334-4201, or call tollfree, 1-800-282-5852 or in metro Atlanta, 656-3645.
Farm Front
Ibis season's 1994 cotton crop could be the largest since 1937, if the December forecast by the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service is realized.
The December projection is 1.480,000 bales with a yield per acre estimated at 812 pounds, compared to 1,400,000 bales expected in November and 733,000 bales pro duced in 1993.
Harvested acreage is expected to total 875.0(H) acres, 275,000 acres above the previous year. If realized, acreage harvested would be the largest since 1955.
Georgia's pecan crop is forecast at 55 million pounds, 15 million pounds below expectations in October. If the December prediction holds true, pro duction will be 95 million pounds below the 1993 record high crop, but 25 million pounds above 1992's short crop. According to the statistics ser vice, frequent rains and cloudy weath er caused yield problems over much of the state, especially in southwest Georgia.

Ag Department Regulates Seafood to Ensure Quality and Safety

Before reaching a Georgia consumer's dinner table, seafood and other food products undergo an extensive program of inspection, licensing and certification by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. In its efforts to protect con sumers, the Department regulates the transportation, processing, packaging, distribution, wholesaling and retailing of seafood and other food products.
Departmental authority for inspecting food in general, including seafood, comes from such laws as the Georgia Food Act and the Georgia Weights and Measures Laws and Regulations. The Georgia Wholesale Fish Dealers Law applies more specifically to seafood.
Of the types of businesses covered under the Georgia Food Act, more than a dozen pertain to seafood, including, among others, supermarkets and other retail food stores, retail convenience-type stores, retail seafood stores, wholesale fish dealers, shrimp processing plants, crabmeat processing plants, catfish pro cessing plants, miscellaneous seafood processing plants, food storage ware houses and salvage food dealers.
Seafood inspection overall is a cooper ative effort involving the Food and Drug Administration, several other federal and state regulatory agencies and voluntary industry associations.
Like many other states, Georgia con tracts with the FDA to have a designated state agency, in this case the Georgia Department of Agriculture, to do the actual inspection of seafood facilties as a means of providing local, hands-on supervision and to avoid duplication of effort.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources leases the seafood growing areas in the state's fresh and coastal waters to make sure these sites are not polluted. The Georgia Department of Agriculture inspects those seafood ves sels which land oysters or clams at dockside, the first point of entry into the state. All points of transporting, processing, preparing, packaging and labeling between the point of entry and the point of sale are supervised by die Department. Restaurants and other establishments that serve seafood to customers are inspected by the local county health department.
Inspections are conducted by the Department's Consumer Protection Division, which is organized into five districts with 72 sanitarians covering the state. While District Five includes all of Georgia's coastal counties and many of the state's seafood processing firms, such facilities are also found in Atlanta, Augusta, Columbus, Macon and several other locations throughout the state.

Georgia seafood regulations are among the strictest in the nation. All seafood processing firms are required to obtain a license and/or certification to do business in the state. These firms are inspected a minimum of at least evety three months and more frequently if vio lations are significant. Georgia is one of the few states that inspects all processing plants and other food dealers at least once per quarter.
Sanitarians make routine unannounced visits during the facility's operating hours with detailed inspection agendas. These rigorous inspections ensure that high stan dards are met regarding cleanliness, com plete and accurate labeling, food safety and good management practices.
The Department has maintained this quarterly inspection schedule for seafood since the late 1960s, and since 1972 for the shellfish program, which was trans ferred from the State Health Department to the Agriculture Department in 1972.
Additional rules and regulations are required for shellfish, since it is some times consumed raw. Shellfish is defined as oysters, mussels and clams. Beginning Jan. 1, 1995, the Department of Agriculture will have four shellfish spe cialists who are certified by the Food and Drug Administration.
Water quality is essential to shellfish safety. State inspectors make sure that all shellfish harvested and brought to the docks along Georgia's coasts comes from approved harvest sites, and that no boot legged shellfish is sold in Georgia.
Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin said that the state is recog nized as having one of the most outstand ing shellfish sanitation programs in the nation. "The FDA evaluates state pro grams each year, based on pollution-free shellfish growing areas, as well as the sanitation of processing facilities, and Georgia's shellfish program is consistent ly rated second to none," Irvin said.
Dairy Shortcourse Scheduled
At Rural Development Center
The University of Georgia will spon sor a Dairy Shortcourse Thursday, Jan. 19 at the Rural Development Center in Tifton.
Course topics will include: Veterinary Care of the Postpartum Cow, the True Costs of Mastitis, a Comparison of Com and Sorghum Silages for Lactating Dairy Cows and Optimum Forage Utilization in Dairy Rations.
Registration will begin at 9 a.m. with adjournment at 12:40 p.m. For more information, call Joe West at 912-3863364.

The vast majority of seafood in Georgia is consumed in the Atlanta area and sold through major supermarkets, thus underscoring the need for all Department sanitarians, not only those along the coast, to be thoroughly trained in seafood inspections.
Some of the same qualities that make seafood so popular as a food item, such as its high protein content, can also make it susceptible to spoilage by promoting bac terial growth, and therefore require extra care on the part of processors, handlers and consumers.

Ga. National Fair Receives Top Awards for ExceUence

The Georgia National Fair in Perry

was cited five times for excellence when

it captured top honors during the recent

annual convention of the International

Association of Fairs and Expositions.

The Fair claimed four out of seven

wins in the agricultural programs compe

tition and it also won first-place honors in

the competitive exhibits display category,

according to Michael A. Froehlich, exec

utive director of the Georgia National

Fair. Competition was against other fairs

whose annual attendance ranges from

250,001 to 500,000.

The Georgia National Fair won

awards for the following categories:

Agricultural Program for the

Fairgoing Public

Video of Overall Agricultural

Programs

Video of a Special Event for

Exhibitors or Fairgoing Public

(school field trip program)

Premium List for Competitive

Events for Exhibitors' Use

Competitive Exhibits Display

(Georgia Living Center)

"Agricultural and competitive exhibits

are the backbone of a fair," Froehlich

said. "This international recognition is

fantastic especially when you realize the

Georgia National Fair is only five years

old. We're very proud and honored by

this international acclaim and recogni

tion."

In another competition, the Georgia

National Fairgrounds & Agricenter

received honors from the Women's

Professional Rodeo Association. The

Agricenter was awarded the 1994 WRPA

Indoor Rodeo Best Ground Award for the

Georgia National Rodeo held in

February, 1994.

Froehlich said one of the fair's goals is

to serve as an educational source for agi-

culture.
