Ga. Specialty Foods Invade the Big Apple
Gourmet foods from 20 of Georgia's finest specialty food manufacturers will be displayed at the International Fancy Food and Confection Show, July 8-11, in New York City, according to Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin.
The Georgia products will be sampled by buyers from throughout the United States and several foreign countries. Many buyers purchase products on-the-spot for retail at travel attractions, gourmet and gift shops, department stores and other outlets for fine foods.
The Georgia companies exhibiting in New York City are being assisted by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, which has been involved in the promotion of specialty foods and wines from the Peach State for several years.
Irvin praised the cooperative working relationship between the Department and the specialty food and wine industry and noted that several states were interested in the program. "One governor was so impressed with our promotional program that he and his staff have been studying our efforts to see if they might incorporate ideas into their business development program," said Irvin.

one of the most outstanding events to showcase high-quality food products, has announced that several products manufactured and sold by Georgia firms are in the running for "best of show" awards. The products are judged by category and announcement of the winners is made during the show. Last year, the Seckinger-Lee Co. received two awards in the outstanding dessert and hors d'oeurves categories.
Georgia firms participating in the New York City show are Jefferson Farm Foods of Jefferson; South Georgia Pecan Co. of Valdosta; Byrd Cookie Co. and Savannah Cookie Co. of Savannah; Braswell's

Continued Dry, Hot Weather Takes Toll on Georgia Crops
Peaches, like these at Sunburst Fruit Packers, Byron, have been harvested and are available in good supplies at Georgia State Farmers' Markets as the Peach State joins the rest of the nation in celebrating National Peach Month in July.
Continued hot, dry weather conditions have contributed to the further decline of many Georgia crops, according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin.
"With adequate rains in most of Georgia this spring, we entered one of the most promising growing seasons we've anticipated in years," said Irvin. "But, our present field conditions are a prime example that it doesn't take long for extremely hot weather and dry conditions to take a toll on our crops."
The corn crop has been hit hardest, since drought conditions developed during the critical silking and tasselling stages. In fact, according to the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service, some dryland corn has been completely destroyed.
"We are particularly concerned about our peanut crop, which is approaching a critical stage in
Lockerly Arboretum Provides
Information to Ga. Gardeners
One of Georgia's best-kept secrets for gardeners and flower fanciers is the Lockerly Arboretum, a horticultural research and education complex in Milledgeville that has also been described as a living encyclopedia for plant lovers.
However, the secret may be getting out, according to horticulturist Ruth Bell Patterson. Group requests for weekday tours and visits from individuals have increased, although the arboretum does not actively seek publicity. "We're here to help people learn about plants," Patterson said. "We're not here to be a showplace garden."
The largest numbers of visitors come from school groups, scout troops, garden clubs and churches. Patterson, who has worked at the arboretum for eight years, tries to prepare presentations appropriate for each visiting group. For example, she keeps Girl Scout handbooks on hand so she can help young visitors earn merit badges.
Drop-in visitors are welcome, but the staff usually is too busy to provide tours.
The encyclopedia comparison is certainly apt. More than 5,000 plants grow on the 47-acre site, and
complete data about each plant is entered meticulously in card catalogs. The arboretum has a 500-volume horticulture library, including most current plant and seed catalogs.
Many of the plants are imported. Staff members sometimes swap Georgia species with plant scientists and former visitors from afar. All data about plant species, origin, cultivation and results are duly logged to become part of the arboretum's living history.

terms of moisture requirements, and cotton and soybeans, which are severely stressed," said Irvin. "With immediate rain and moderation in temperatures, we can anticipate recovery. But without some rapid moisture relief, we could face significant losses for these crops as well."
In addition, pasture and hay crop conditions have declined drastically, making it necesary for farmers to provide hay to cattle, according to Georgia Agriculture Statistics Service.
"I have asked the director of Georgia's Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, Ralph Hudgens, to proceed with initiating the Emergency Feed Assistance Program to help our dairy and livestock producers," said Irvin.
Several counties also have been approved for emergency haying and grazing of land under the 1990 Acreage Conservation Reserve (ACR) and Conservation Use (CU) programs. Farmers interested in grazing livestock and harvesting hay on lands under these programs should contact their local ASCS office.

Egg Producers To Vote On Amendment To Order
The U.S. Department of Agriculture will conduct a national referendum among egg producers July 16 through Aug. 10 on an amendment to the Egg Research and Promotion Order that would permanently eliminate its refunds of assessments.
If the amendment is adopted, egg producers will continue to pay mandatory, nonrefundable assessments of 5 cents per 30-dozen case of commercial eggs to the American Egg Board for reserach promotion and consumer education programs.
All commercial egg producers owning over 30,000 laying hens during the period Jan. 1 through March 31, 1990, except those chiefly producing hatching eggs, are eligible to vote in the referendum.

tural Company of St. Louis, Mo., allowing field tests of genetically engineered soybeans this summer in 11 Eastern and Midwestern states, including Georgia.
Monsanto scientists are
testing the transgenic soybeans for tolerance to the herbicide glyphosate also known by the trade name of Roundup, according to USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.
The experimental soybeans will be contained within the test site and will not be allowed to pollinate any surrounding plants.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Wednesday, July 11,1990
Now is the time to plan for the fall garden. Tomatoes, okra, corn and lima beans should be planted by mid-July to allow the plants time to mature before frost. Cucumbers, squash and snap beans are other vegetables that can be planted at this time.
Zucchini and crookneck are sum mer squashes and should be picked .while they are young and tender. Hubbard and butternut, considered winter squashes, should be har vested when they are fully mature.
Fish residue is a good organic fertilizer. Bury the heads, tails and bones in the garden. Sprinkle the area with pepper to keep pets from digging up the remains.
If potted plants dry out quickly after watering, it is possible that the water is running through the soil without being absorbed. Mix some peat or vermiculite into the soil to help retain water.
Houseplants that are grown in a sunny window should be turned at least once each week so all sides of the plants will have a share of the sun. Otherwise the plants will grow at an angle as they lean towards
the sunlight. Some folks are prone to misplac
ing their tools while gardening. If
this a problem for you, try painting the handles of your tools with bright colors so they can be spotted
easily in the grass.
Arboretum Provides Services to Gardeners
(Continued from page 1)
Lockerly Arboretum Foundation was founded in 1966 as an inde pendent, non-profit organization, largely through the efforts of Mr. E. J. Grassman, a prominent figure in the development of the kaolin in dustry in Georgia. U.S. Representa tive Carl Vinson was among the prominent business and profes sional leaders who have served on the foundation's board of trustees.
The arboretum was established to promote the concepts of conserva tion and beautification. It was de signed as a laboratory for the in struction and edification of parties interested in horticulture and plant life. The goal of the foundation is to increase the public awareness of the need for, and the benefits of, conser vation and to help create the desire to further promote these principles.
Located on the site of a former cotton plantation, the arboretum grounds are rolling and terraced in some areas and flat in others. In cluded in the complex are a gazebo housing an old-fashioned water
pump, a restored servant's cabin presently housing a tree museum, and a headquarters building adjoin ing the greenhouse area.
The arboretum has two green houses, one containing tropical plants and the other more than 350 kinds of cacti and succulents. In the tropical greenhouse is a specimen of the Madagascar periwinkle, also known as vinca, a plant that is the only source of a medicine used to fight leukemia. In the desert green house is a specimen of Euphorbia millii, the plant believed to have been used for Jesus' crown of thorns.
Practically every tree and shrub on the grounds is labeled with its Latin and common names. The ar boretum contains 300 kinds of rho dodendron, 250 to 300 azalea spe cies, more than 100 kinds of coni fers and more than 100 types of hollies.
In addition, several specialty areas have been started including a perennial herb bed, iris beds, day-
lily beds, rhododendron garden, vineyard, bulb and perennial bed.
A special project for the past year has been to include as many native Georgia tree and shrub species as possible. Many Georgia and U.S. endangered plants also are culti vated on the grounds.
In the tree museum and at se lected points along the easilywalked trails are informational dis plays, giving the reader more of an understanding of what he or she is viewing.
Guided tours are available by appointment, but individuals are welcome to visit and enjoy the facil ity at their own pace. The garden is not presently available for private meetings, except for garden clubs or horticulturally-related groups. Ad mission is free, and parking is plen tiful. The arboretum is open week days from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Weekend activities are limited due to budget restrictions.
In an age where bigger is equated with better, the Lockerly Arbore tum, though relatively small, has succeeded by finding its particular niche and nurturing it. For more information about this "living plant encyclopedia," call (912) 452-2112.
It may be hot and dry where you are, but this lagoon on the grounds of the Lockerly Arboretum invites even the most tired visitor for a peaceful stroll.
