June Celebrated As Dairy Month
ag consumer line...
June is recognized as Dairy Month, a time set aside to pay tribute to Georgia's dairy industry. The theme for this year's observance, "Milk Back to Basics," is designed to help remind consumers of the importance of dairy products as part of a balanced diet.
Each year many new food products are introduced into American supermarkets. With so many items added to those already available, it is no wonder that many shoppers have difficulty making sense of all these products and their health and nutrition claims. Therefore, many consumers have found that "getting back to basics" can help put an often-confusing food world into proper perspective.
When eaten in balance and moderation, foods from the Four Food Groups Milk, Meat, Fruit-Vegetable, and Grain provide the nutrients needed for good nutrition and health.

Georgia wheat farmers are busy gathering their crop with progress slightly ahead of harvest for the same period last year.
The average yield for Georgia's wheat crop currently is forecast at 35 bushels per acre, three bushels per acre more than the 1989 crop. Acreage harvested for grain is expected to total 590,000 acres, a 16 percent decline from the 700,000 acres harvested last year. Production is expected to total 20.7 million bushels, down eight percent from the 1989 total.
Q: I am interested in growing boysenberries on my land in north Georgia. Do you have any information on this subject? I would like to know how they will do in this climate.
A: Boysenberries, a type of blackberry, are not reliably hardy in the eastern part of this country, but are mainly grown on the west coast. We have sent you some brochures on growing blackberries, which include information on boysenberries and raspberries. You should check with your local county extension agent to find out how well these berries will do in your area.
Q: What do the numbers listed on fertilizer labels, such as 3-9-18 or 5-10-15, mean?
A: The three numbers refer to the total amounts of primary nutrients contained in the fertilizer. These nutrients are nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. For example, a fertilizer listed as 3-9-18 contains 3 percent nitrogen, 9 percent phosphorous and 18 percent potassium, which adds up to 30 percent of the bag's total available primary plant food. The sources of these nutrients must be listed on the label as well. In addition the product may contain secondary nutrients and micronutrients, such as calcium, magnesium, iron, etc., which also must be listed on the label along with their percentages and sources. By law, the manufacturer must guarantee these percentages.

Fences Important Part of Farm Management
For first-time farmers or more experienced ones, fences are an important part of any farming or ranching operation. Whether they are used to divide property, confine livestock or improve the appearance of the land, fences can represent a sizeable investment of time and money. They should be carefully planned, constructed and maintained in order to serve their intended purpose.
The most common types of farm fences are board, barbed wire, woven wire, cable mesh, high-tensile, electric or a combination of these. When selecting fencing, the basic factors to consider are the intended use, construction cost and
the builder or land owner's personal preference.
Woven wire and barbed wire often are used for enclosing productive farm land. Marginally productive land is fenced with less expensive materials, often one or two strands of barbed wire.
Board fences, sometimes used to confine livestock and popular on horse farms, often are painted white or whitewashed to make them attractive as well as functional. But they are more expensive to construct and maintain than many wire fences; so the farmer or rancher has to balance practicality with aesthetic considerations.
Woven wire fences, or a combina-
tion of woven wire and barbed wire, generally are used for confining livestock. A single strand of barbed wire at the top of the fence often is used to deter cattle or horses from jumping over or trampling down the fence. On the other hand, barbed wire can tear the animal's hide, allowing for the introduction of diseases, including tetanus.
Since a horse's skin is much thinner than that of a cow, most veterinarians advise against the use of barbed wire on a horse ranch.
Woven wire fencing works best with sheep, since barbed wire alone may tear their fleece. For the

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Wednesday, June 6,1990
we
Dear Editor:
The article, "Farm Employment: INS Provision Designed to Ease Labor Shortage," on page 12 of the May 16, 1990, issue of your publication contains an inaccuracy which we fear may mislead farmers who might consider filing a request to employ alien labor.
The last paragraph states "the U.S. Department of Labor is charged with processing applications . . . within 72 hours of receipt." This implies that farmers can receive a response from the U.S. Department of Labor in 72 hours on whether their application is denied or approved. This is clearly not the case. An application for alien labor certification must be received in this office no later than 60 days before the first date of need.
We feel that users of the Market Bulletin could benefit from having the correct information published.

Quilt Pattern Design Features "Saw Mill'
Wood is one of our nation's most important raw materials. America's forest products industry began in colonial days as trees were cut and shipped to England where the wood was used in building ships for the British royal navy.
Today, the American forest industry produces wood and paper products valued at more than $190 billion each year. The industry ranges in size from large, state-ofthe-art paper mills, to small family-owned sawmills and individual woodlot owners.
The following quilt pattern, known as the "Saw Mill," was designed in honor of the wood products industry, and was featured in the publication, "Georgia Quilting on My Mind."
For more information on these and other quilts, contact the authors of "Georgia Quilting on My Mind," Pat Prewett, P.O. Box 348, Kennesaw, GA 30144; or Annie Ruth Davis at 3064 Memorial Parkway, Kennesaw, GA 30144.

Old stockings or socks make excellent bags for moth balls. If you choose to use moth crystals, sprinkle them on the adhesive side of mask ing tape and hang them up. Keep in mind that mothballs and crystals will not kill moth eggs that already are present in clothing when it is stored. Clean clothing thoroughly be fore you put it away and always place moth balls and crystals well out of the reach of children and pets.

Grandpa's Garden
Toward the end of the growing season, pinch off all the tomato blossoms and the smallest green tomatoes. The roots will then be able to devote more energy to the remaining fruit which can grow and ripen more quickly.
When berries start to ripen, cover them with plastic netting to protect them from birds. This type of netting can be found at garden supply stores. Some folks also use old lace curtains, cheese cloth or nylon netting for this purpose.
Keep chrysanthemums pinched back until mid-July, and then allow them to grow freely. This practice will give them strong roots and develop a more bushy plant with many flowers.
Keep lawns cut to a height of three inches during the summer. This length will provide shade for the roots, and will help keep crabgrass to a minimum. When the surrounding grass is kept at this height, it will prevent sunlight from reaching the low-growing crabgrass which cannot survive without the sun.
Do not include grease, meat scraps, or bones in a compost heap because they will become rancid and attract rats and files.
Gently press some broken egg shells into the soil around plants to discourage cutworms. Another method for battling these pests involves pushing a small straight twig or toothpick into the ground next to the stem of the plant. This will keep the worm from getting a strong enough grip on the stem to cut it.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Fences an Important Part
(Continued from page 1)
sheep's protection, a strand of barbed wire on the top and bottom of the fence will help keep dogs from jumping over the fence and predators from burrowing beneath it.
Electric fencing often is used to confine livestock temporarily where more permanent fencing would be too expensive or undesirable. Permanent electric fences can be built at about half the cost of comparable barbed or woven wire fences.
In addition to lower construction costs, electric fences are inexpensive to operate, easy to move, and can be used to protect livestock and poultry from predators. Keep in mind, however, that electric fences can be dangerous and livestock will require training before they become accustomed to the fencing.
Mesh wire fences are strong and provide safety for animals, but they are more expensive than woven wire. Because of their high costs, these fences are used mostly for corrals, feed lots or small crop acreage areas.
The cable fence provides good protection and good air circulation for livestock. Because of these factors, cable fences often are used in holding pens and feedlots.
High tensile wire fences cost less and last longer than many types of conventional fences. These fences are becoming more popular because of their low maintenance, adaptabil-

To help consumers "get back to basics" with their diets, the Southeast United Dairy Industry Association has prepared a leaflet which provides some recipes for snacks, beverages and desserts made with real milk and milk products. A recipe from this leaflet is featured below. To order the leaflet, send a self-addressed, stamped (25 cents), business (#10) size envelope to:

ity and minimal damage to livestock hides.
The type of fence selected depends on many factors including the size and terrain of the land, the number and type of animals being confined (or kept out), permanence, maintenance, beauty and cost. Obviously, the fencing need of a large cattle or horse ranch would differ from those of a backyard gardener confining rabbits or trying to keep raccoons out of the corn patch.
Several new fencing types, techniques and materials have been introduced in recent years. Farm and garden publications often carry articles on fencing for specific animals and applications. The periodical section of the public library would be a good place to scan for back copies of these articles, if desired. Local Extension Service offices and agricultural colleges are also good sources of general information about the types of fences most suited to your type of farm or landscape application.

mostly good condition. The condition of the cotton crop declined from earlier last month, due largely to problems with thrips. Vegetable crops remained in mostly good condition although somewhat stressed by dry conditions in the southeast.
Farmers have made good progress with soybean planting. At last report the crop was rated mostly fair to good. The peanut crop has continued in largely good condition, although thrips have caused problems for some farmers. Tomato spotted wilt virus has plagued many tobacco fields, and some fields in the southeastern portion of the state have bloomed too early.

Equine Edition Scheduled in July
The Farmers and Con sumers Market Bulletin special horse edition is scheduled for July 4. Owners are reminded that notices included in the 'Horses, Ponies and Mules For Sale" and "At Stud" column must be accompanied by a copy of a valid, negative coggins test (made within the past 12 months). Ads submitted without this test will not be published.
In addition, under the new Georgia Animal Protection Act, boarding and breeding facilities must now be licensed. Livestock Clip/Save Notice
In past years the Market Bulletin published a monthly "Livestock Clip and Save" section which listed the sales schedules for various stockyards and livestock sale and auction facilities throughout Georgia. Over a period of time, many of these establishments began listing their events in the weekly Bulletin Calendar section of the Market Bul letin and the "Livestock Clip and Save" listing was phased out.
These sale facilities provide a valuable service and it is important that farmers and ranchers stay informed of potential sale and show dates for their livestock. Therefore, the Market Bulletin is introducing a new weekly "Livestock Sales and Events" section to present this information to readers in a more usable format.
Individuals interested in listing their livestock sale or auction facility must have their notices in to the Bulletin office one week prior to publication date. For instance, in order for a listing to be published in the June 20 edition, the notice must be received by the Bulletin office no later than June 13. Address notices to: Livestock Sales and Events, Georgia Department of Agriculture, Capitol Square, Atlanta, GA 30334.
This listing will be published each week in the livestock ad section of the Market Bulletin. See page 6 for this week's listing of Livestock Sales and Events.
