We're All Stewards Of Soil and Water
"Citizens of all Creation" is the theme of Soil and Water Stewardship Week this year, and a more appropriate theme could not have been conceived for these times in
which we live. The concept that what we do with the land, water, wildlife and forests which we "own" is no one else's business is being widely challenged. We farmers especially have been rudely awakened to our community responsibilities in recent years by Federal and State
Our guest columnist this week is E. T. "Red" Mullis, president. Georgia Association of Conversation District Supervisors, P.O. Box 434, Statesboro, GA 30458.
regulations regarding our time-honored freedom to do as we please with these resources. We thought government regulations were for industries, cities, developers and other environmental polluters and not for us independent farmers. Now we know the power of other groups which are very concerned about how we manage these resources, because how we manage them affects everybody. Thus we are all "Citizens of all Creation."
In Genesis 2:15, the inspired writer says "And the Lord God took man and put him into the Garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it." Notice that he did not put man there to "squander and despoil" it. Now before some readers conclude that I'm only talking to farmers and large landowners, let me assure them otherwise. You may not own a piece of this earth, but you live here and use it. You may only use God's

Farm Front
According to the latest weather and crop report from the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service, the condition of Georgia's small grain crops was rated mostly good to fair. Farmers in mid-south Georgia havebeen experiencing problems from powdery mildew, rust and Hessian flies, although powdery mildew and rust are now showing up in more northern areas of the state.
Corn responded to warmer temperatures with the crop rated largely good to fair.

Georgia-Grown Commodities Featured On Public Television Cooking Program
The "good taste" of Georgia commodities will be showcased nationwide, as renowned cooking show host Nathalie Dupree features a number of the state's farm products on her new series, Matters of Taste.
Matters of Taste, the only series produced for national distribution by Georgia Public Television, airs on 85 percent of the public television stations throughout America. Georgia viewers can see the show on Thursdays at 8:30 p.m. and on Saturdays at 3 p.m. on all nine PBS stations.
On May 10, cabbage will be the first Georgia commodity highlighted in the location feature of the show. This educational segment includes the Colquitt Co. cabbage farms of Ray Dean Hart and Ray Gene Williams. In addition, the Queen Bee Farms and Valley Shore
Farms packing operations, located on the Moultrie Farmers' Market, will acquaint viewers with how cabbage is handled before it reaches the marketplace.
Future shows will feature Georgia-grown eggplant, okra, watermelons, cantaloupes, zucchini, turnips and mustard greens, sweet potatoes and peanut butter processing.
The Georgia Department of Agriculture played a major role in identifying and scheduling the location segments featuring these stateproduced commodities.
"Our area marketing coordinators are second to none when it comes to identifying the location of farmers and what they are producing," said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. "They were able to serve as actual location

Ga. Peaches
Early Harvest Indicates Good Corp for Growers
Popular cooking show host Nathalie Dupree is shown on the set of her "Matters of Taste" series along with producer Torn Mills (1) and director Tony Marshall (r).
Despite rumors of a poor peach crop, harvest of the commodity is already underway in south Georgia and growers are expecting a high quality crop with adequate volume, according to Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin.
South Georgia packing houses have been operating for approximately two weeks, and harvest will begin in middle Georgia this week.
"Peaches are considered one of our state's most rare and precious treasures," said Irvin. "Not only are they in demand for their sweet, juicy flavor, they also rank high in nutritional value."
While encouraging peach consumption may be easy, growing the fruit is a challenge for the state's commercial peach producers.

Dear Editor: I thought you might like to know that your Market
Bulletin is used for more things than you might imagine. My husband retired early a few months ago and we bought a farm and moved from the Atlanta area. We fell in love with the "laid back, slow pace" of life in the country at Lake Hartwell. Recently, on one of those very hot winter days, he and I were out fishing and I asked him what day of the week it was. That's how "laid back" we've become. tHe thought for a moment or two and replied, "Well, it has to be Thursday, because the Market Bulletin always arrives on
Wednesday and we got it yesterday!"

Rudolf Clark, of Gainesville, Ga., recently received the Georgia Distinguished Cooperator Award in recognition for his outstanding service to Georgia Cooperatives. Gene Marks of Mansfield, Ga., representing the Georgia Division of Dairymen Inc., presented the award to Clark at the annual meeting of the Georgia Council of Farmer Cooperatives in Macon.
An active dairy farmer for 36 years, Clark was a pioneer in the formation of dairy cooperatives in Georgia. He was one of the founders of Georgia Milk Producers and served as the association's president for 19 years.
Clark also was a 30-year veteran of the Georgia Department of Agriculture where he served as district I agriculture field forces coordinator overseeing regulatory responsibilities in 37 north Georgia coun-
ties.

scouts for the show and shared their expertise about Georgia commodities with Ms. Dupree and her production staff."
Because so many Georgia farmers utilize the Department's market facilities to move their produce, the Cordele, Thomasville and Moultrie Farmers' Markets served as excellent backdrops for presenting the "field to consumer" process.
Although the Matters of Taste series reflects a national rather than a regional cuisine, Ms. Dupree strives to introduce viewers to the wide variety and quality of produce found in her home state.
"Most people perceive Georgia as a grits and greens state," said Ms. Dupree, "They are not aware of how many varied fruits and vegetables are produced here and that it is possible to fill your dinner plate with things grown right here in Georgia.
"I think we as Georgians should hold our heads up high," she concluded. "When it comes to Georgia pofr.o"ducts, we've got a lot to be proud

creation to satisfy your own need for food, shelter, clothing or recreation, but how you use it affects others. Do you discard your garbage and trash along city streets, ruralroads, forest, paths, or the banks of lakes and streams? Don't you realize that this is polluting our environment and that somebody must clean it up? It doesn't matter whether you own a large farm or a small city lot, you have a responsibility to God to "dress and keep it," so that it does not contribute to the pollution of our environment. You also have an implied obligation to keep your "garden" from becoming an objectionable eyesore to your neighbor.
If-we would be good stewards of all that we possess, we could truly qualify to be called 'Citizens of all Creation."
Nine years ago, Extension Veterinarian Dr. David Bedell wrote an article for the Market Bulletin on the economic viability of rabbit production in Georgia. Contacted recently, Dr. Bedell, now retired but still active in rabbit circles, said the
This is the second in a two-part series on rabbit production in Georgia as a possible agricultural enterprise.
conclusions from that earlier article are virtually the same today: raising rabbits on a small-scale to supplement the home meat supply was relatively easy and inexpensive, but entering the rabbit business fulltime requires extensive research and sufficient resources to weather several years of economic uncertainty.
According to Lesley Haynie of the Flint River Rabbit Breeders Association, most rabbit fanciers in Georgia are involved in hobby or club activities or in breeding animals for show competitions rather than for meat production. "Even as a breeder, it's hard to make money," Haynie said. "It takes a couple of years to get your stock together to sell to other breeders. You have to line breed in order to get the proper gene pool and cull severely for show purposes."
There are a number of successful south Georgia breeders who raise rabbits for a meat market. Georgia

areas have been waiting on rain before resuming planting.
Tobacco transplanting has been completed, and the crop is rated good to fair although problems from spotted tomato wilt virus have been reported in several areas.
Rapid progress continued with the onion harvest and the prospects for the crop remain favorable.

consumers can find rabbit meat in several supermarkets and independent grocery stores, usually in the specialty meats section.
Rabbit processors in Georgia who handle less than 2,500 animals per year are inspected by the department's Consumer Protection Division for sanitation, proper equipment, packaging and labeling. Under state law, if a Georgia rabbit processor were to have a volume of 2,500 animals per year (none currently do), inspection would be carried out by the department's Meat Inspection Division.
Department regulations that apply to rabbits include processing, chilling and freezing procedures; arrangement and placement of equipment to prevent contamination; packing, . labeling, transportation and storage. Like any food product sold in stores, rabbit meat, whether Georgia-raised or imported, is inspected at the first point of entry into the state's food supply, as well as during regular, comprehensive food store inspections.
"We receive quite a few calls from people who want to process rabbits on a small scale, and, of course, we are always happy to assist them," Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin said. In addition to supplying information about regulations, the department often offers technical advice to producers on ways to make their product more appealing to grocers and consumers.
Local county Extension Service offices are good sources of information for beginning backyard rabbit production. The American Rabbit Breeders Association is a good source for those who are interested in the commercial aspects of rabbit production. For more information in south Georgia, contact the Flint River Rabbit Breeder's Association, 1311 Eager Dr., Albany, Ga. 31707; or in north Georgia, the Decatur Rabbit Breeders Association, 140 Felton Drive, Fayetteville, Ga. 30214.
Good Crop for Growers
(Continued from page 1)
Peaches are subject to both the whims of nature and the hazards of production. For example, about one third of last year's Georgia peach crop was damaged by late frost. In addition, too much or too little rain, inadequate sunshine and chilling hours, frost, hail, and diseases can all adversely affect peach production. Because peaches bruise so easily, the packing and shipping process also can damage the fruit and accelerate its already short shelf life.
"There are so many obstacles which hinder peach production that it's a wonder the crop ever makes it to market," said Al Pearson, chairman of the Georgia Peach Commission. "Georgia peaches are known for their superior quality and with harvest underway, consumers can begin enjoying this treasured Georgia commodity now."
