Vildlife Protection Focus of Group
Two years ago when I came to the eorgia Wildlife Federation, after > years of working as a wildlife ologist, I was faced with the task
rebuilding an organization in transition. Today, the Georgia Wildlife Federation is a strong, growing, broad-based organization with nearly 10,000 members across the state. Georgia's oldest and
irgest conservation organization is >ing into its 50th year of operaon. The issue of conservation touches feryone from school children to >rporation presidents. Everyone, it

Looking out across our beautiful ;ate, it's hard to imagine that we yen have environmental problems, ut it's like looking at a creek from le top of a mountain. You have to et down in the valley for a close-up iew to see if the water is clean and ore. We rely heavily on the farmers nd land owners of Georgia to keep s informed when problems do deelop. Farmers are the lifeline to ic survival of wildlife. Clean water in our rivers, soil rosion, drainage of wetlands, crop amage, and loss of valuable wildfe habitats are some of the issues 'e are actively involved with. My job at the Georgia Wildlife 'ederation is to protect the environlental interests of all citizens. We re not pro- or anti-development. ^6 try and help create a balance etween the different interests and lake environmental concerns one f the top priorities. Through comromise and co-operation, we can eep small problems from becoming igger ones. One of our most popular prorams relates to gardening and .omeowners. The Backyard Wild-

Department Receives Grant To Evaluate Groundwater Sources
The Georgia Department of Agri-
culture has received a $25,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to evaluate the impact of pesticides on groundwater sources in southwest Georgia, Commissioner Tommy Irvin announced last week.
The funds were provided to the Department by EPA under its Cooperative Pesticide Enforcement Agreement. The Department is working in cooperation with Natural Resources Commissioner J. Leonard Ledbetter, whose staff will actually be conducting the field sampling and evaluation for the survey.
"Since the Natural Resources Department conducts routine testing of Georgia's groundwater, it only made sense to contract with them to perform the actual field work for this survey," said Irvin. "I think this is an excellent example of how two state agencies can pool together resources to accomplish a goal."
The survey will involve the sampling of shallow wells, located primarily in the Dougherty Plain area,
where intensive agriculture is conducted over near-surface aquifers. The study will focus on the presence of aldicarb, a highly toxic pesticide which has high potential for movement to groundwater, and ethylene dibromide (EDB), a pesticide banned by EPA in 1984 and no
longer available in Georgia. The water samples, which will be
collected primarily from domestic
wells near fields with a history of aldicarb use, will be gathered this
month with survey results available in December.
"While we are not aware of any significant groundwater contamina-
tion in Georgia from pesticides," said Irvin, "I feel that this survey will serve as an important tool to
more accurately detect and evaluate
any groundwater contamination and provide information which will be helpful in planning for any future pesticide monitoring activities."
Excess Moisture Causes Problems For Homeowners and Gardeners
Although most Georgia gardeners would agree that too much water is better than too little, this year's heavy rains are causing some widespread problems.
Actually, according to Georgia De-
partment of Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin, the problems are a result of a combination of three years of drought followed by excess rain. "Plants whose root systems and immune systems were stressed by the drought might just now be showing the effects of that stress," said Irvin. "Even the plants that survived the drought are more vulnerable to fungal diseases and root rot caused by excess soil and
air moisture." Moisture standing on plant
leaves encourages mold growth, as does moisture in the air. Cloudy
days mean less sunshine, which means less opportunity for plant surfaces to dry, which leads to more mold growth. Spraying fungicides on plants can be effective, but not if the next shower washes the fungicide off.
Another unwanted side effect of the wet weather is that flowering shrubs and trees like Crape myrtles are late blooming due to lack of
sunshine. On the positive side, many plants
are bigger, as vegetative growth has been helped by the tropical-like conditions of frequent rain and high
humidity. An even more common and per-
vasive problem is root rot. Previously healthy-looking plants whose leaves begin turning yellow or brown in sections are more likely to be root-damaged than diseased.
The previous droughts probably
initiated the problem by weakening or reducing the plant's root system. Then this year's excess moisture water depleted soil nutrients, and
standing water cut off the plant's oxygen.
There is little most homeowners can do at this stage of the season than to install drainage systems or hope that sunshine will return to dry the soil somewhat around their trees and shrubs.
But plant experts stress that planning and prevention are the most effective way to deal with plant problems. Just as gardeners have learned to prepare for drought with mulches and efficient home irrigation systems, they also are now seeing the need to plan for too much moisture as well. Drainage considerations, including soil types, slopes and raised-bed applications should be part of any garden or landscape plan.
Commissioner Irvin pointed out that while the Department is very interested in advising homeowners and gardeners' how to cope with excess moisture, the net results of this year's rains are positive. "Our row crops are still in good to excellent condition, and high yields are predicted for several of them," Irvin said. "Georgia farmers have survived several years of drought, and we will find ways to cope with this unusual problem of too much moisture as well."
Georgia homeowners and gardeners with questions or concerns about weather-related problems may write the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Division of Entomology and Pesticides, Capitol Square, Atlanta, Georgia 30334; or call tollfree in Georgia, 1-800-282-5852.

Horses, mules, ponies for sale
// you have questions regarding ads in this category, call Sonya Way at 6519083.
All equine advertised in the
Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within the past 12 months. A copy of this test must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) can no longer be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing an animal. Any falsification of coggins tests can result in fines and/or suspension of advertising privileges in the Market Bulletin. This regulation also applies to horses advertised in the "At Stud" category of the special equine editions.
In addition, all horse farmers must have had animals in their possession 60 days or more before offering them for sale through this publication.

Wildlife
(Continued from page 1)
life Habitat program was developed because loss of habitat is the major problem facing wildlife. With urban areas expanding, where will all the little critters live? You can provide everything they need right in your own backyard.
We have two fund-raising events a year. August 18-20, we will have the 7th Annual Southeastern Buckarama. This is our second year at the recently improved Lakewood Fairgrounds in Atlanta, home of the new Coca-Cola Amphitheatre. It's a great buying show for hunting and camping equipment. But it's also 3 days full of educational seminars by famous outdoorsmen, hunter safety courses will be conducted on Saturday, and this year as the star of the show we will have the largest white-tail deer trophy exhibit ever seen in the Southeast over 640 feet long and 8 feet high.

Extension Service Tests Home Canning Equipment
Many folks enjoy home canning their fresh summer fruits and vegetables so they can enjoy them in the months ahead. Home canning is an easy and safe process if your canner is accurate. But an inaccurate dial gauge canner may cause food spoilage and food poisoning. Therefore, consumers should test their dial-gauge canners periodically to ensure accuracy. Extension Service home economists will test dialgauge canners and although the test takes only a few minutes, appointments are necessary.
