Financial Audit Closes Warehouse

With a practiced hand, Mike Buckner, third-generation miller, directs a portion of corn to the millstone.
Historic Grist Mill Still Grinding

Like any young father, Mike Buckner goes to work to bring home the bacon. But he also gets the grits and cornbread, too.
Buckner, 35, the father of two tow-headed boys who like nothing better than going barefoot in the summertime, is a part-time miller. He grinds corn and wheat in a rustic mill that his great-grandfather built.
The mill sits atop the dam of a 25-acre millpond that was first filled in 1840. "They built this dam with a scoop and wheelbarrows," Buckner said. "Originally the mill was on the other end, but my grandfather put it on this end."
Buckner lives in a house built by his ancestors in 1840, but that has been lovingly restored using bits and pieces of old farmhouses
Hey Mom, wait for me...and me...and me...and me! Waterfowl enjoy the millpond at Mike Buckner's mill located in Talbot County.

throughout the area. It overlooks the millpond where Canadian geese and goslings paddle the still waters.
It is a picture of serenity, even on busy days when Buckner cranks open the sluice that allows the steady flow of water to power the 25-horsepower water turbine. Using equipment that is mostly half a century old, Buckner grinds his own corn for grits and meal, and customgrinds grain for his customers.
When the millstone is humming, Buckner is animated, efficiency incarnate. "I've been running this since I was 14 years old," he said. "I had to hire a man to drive for me."
Having learned the trade from his maternal grandfather, Edlow Hart Fielder, it makes him his family's third-generation miller. The mill was erected originally by the great-grandfather, Lucious Pinkney Fielder.
"I inherited the mill on the condition that I keep the name," he said. "It will always be Fielder's Mill."
There was a time when Buckner considered leaving the homeplace for a job teaching. He took a degree from ABAC and Columbus College, but the tug of his roots was too strong. He farmed for a while on the family's 200-acre farm. Now, he works part-time as postmaster at Rupert, a small nearby town (his mother is postmaster at Junction City), coming home in the afternoon

Farmers Cotton Warehouse of Dawson has been closed down and all financial records confiscated as result of an audit conducted by the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin took the action after an audit indicated irregularities in receipted liabilities and shortages of cotton on hand in the Terrell County warehouse owned by J.W. "Bill" Whitaker.
"A shortage of any collateral security involving an agricultural commodity is a very serious matter and one in which this department will diligently pursue," said Irvin.
Further action will be taken based on the results of a full investigation conducted by the department.
New Editor Named For Market Bulletin
Carlton Moore was named editor of the Farmers and Consumers Mar ket Bulletin last week by Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. In this capacity, Moore will serve as director of the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Information and Education division and manage the operation of the Market Bulletin.
Moore, who has served as the Commissioner's assistant press aide for the past two years, will be filling the position of editor previously held by Toby Moore. A native of Laurens County, Moore joined the department in 1984 as assistant editor of the Market Bulletin. He graduated from Georgia Southern College with a bachelor's degree in public relations in 1980 and previously worked in printing with Speciality Distributing Co. of Atlanta.
"The Market Bulletin is probably one of the most visible services provided by the Department of Agriculture," said Irvin. "With Mr. Moore's past experience in working with the Bulletin and the media, I am confident he will continue to provide optimum service to the over 250,000 subscribers who receive this publication."

UGA Horse Judging Teams Win Big

Mullally, Michelle Strickland and
Melynda Ware. In April, the UGA team went up
against 20 teams from the most established horse programs in the country at the Southwestern Horse Judging Contest and placed second in performance and sixth in halter, reasons and overall.
Individual efforts leading the team came from Kwaiser and Hill, who placed sixth and ninth in performance, respectively. This team will represent UGA at the Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio, and the National All Breeds Contest this fall.
Both the senior and junior teams are coached by UGA instructor Dr. Julia McCann.

Peak Season Now For Georgia Peaches
Summer is peach season in Georgia, which ranks third nationally in peach production. Right now there is a plentiful supply of delicious, nutritious Georgia peaches for everyone. The new Peach Commission brochure, "Light and Peachy," offers traditional recipes that are lower in sugar and fat, but still taste great.
For a copy of "Light and Peachy," contact the Georgia Peach Commission, PO Box 38146, Atlanta, 30334.

The UGA Senior Horse Judging Team has had a remarkable competition
season, doing well at both the Reserve National Arabian Horse Judging Contest and the National All Breeds Contest. From left: Dr. Julia McCann,
coach; Tracey Neely, Heather Wilson, Kevan Sounders, Hayden Dean and Angie McDaniel.

The University of Georgia horse judging teams both junior and senior divisions had a great year during this competition season, scoring high in most contests they entered.
The senior team was the Reserve National Champion Team at the Arabian National Contest in Louisville, Ky. The team also placed third in halter, fourth in performance and sixth in reasons, out of 30 teams from across the country.
Senior team members include Hayden Dean, Angie McDaniel, Tracey Neely, Kevan Saunders and Heather Wilson. Wilson placed first overall in the contest, winning $750 in scholarships and a saddle, and McDaniel finished fifth high individual overall and first in halter.
The senior team also finished

third overall at the North American International Livestock Exposition Intercollegiate Horse Judging Contest in Louisville in November. Dean, Saunders and Neely were in the top 10 individuals during that competition.
The junior team continued the winning tradition of the senior team by winning the Middle Tennessee State University All Breeds Contest in Murfreesboro, Tn., this spring. Two UGA teams competed in the contest, among five Southeastern schools, and finished second and fifth in halter, first and third in performance and first and third in reasons.
The junior teams included Cathy Barnes, Dawn Drewry, Regina Hall, Allison Hill, Becky Howard, Edwina Keen, Kristine Kwaiser, Anna

Makin' Do

Makin' Do received several tips for removing freezer odors. Apparently this is a common problem among our readers and many of them responded with their own solutions. Thanks to those whose letters we received. Unfortunately, we cannot print all of them.
This one comes from Bennett Kennedy of Newnan. He recommends cleaning your freezer (or whatever stale or odor-ridden appliance or container) by washing it with soap and water and drying it completely. Then, place a cup or saucer of vanilla extract inside and close it up overnight. Kennedy says it works for rooms with odors too.
Mrs. Floyd Morrison of Omaha recommends applying apple cider vinegar to

the unplugged freezer. Then, re-plug the freezer and freeze the apple cider vinegar to the appliance. Close it and leave it frozen in there for a week. Defrost the freezer and wash it with clear water and dry the interior. There will be a slight vinegar odor for awhile, but it will not affect food which has been properly wrapped.
Reader Fred Hill of Donalsonville says to check the drain pan of the unit for odor problems. The heat from the unit can sour uncleaned areas and lead to foul smells.
A resident of Gray, Lawrence Cowher recommends trying tea bags or pecan shells for removing freezer odor.

A compound to control cattle and swine parasites can be put into chicken feed to halt a mealworm that wrecks insulation in modern poultry houses, according to the USDA. Ivermec-
tin is the name of the compound. The mealworm is not an internal parasite of chickens, but would consume the compound when it eats spilled chicken feed. A

Grandpa's Garden
Many successful gardeners just happen to be avid fishermen, since they have access to plenty of earthworms. But it seems that the worms are always at the bottom of the can. Outsmart your fishbait by removing both ends from the can and replacing them with plastic lids that fit snugly and make both ends accessible.
If you happen to have a particularly successful fishing expedition, your fish cleaning chores will be easier if you use an old clipboard during the scaling process. Simply clip the fish's tail to the board to hold it in place while you work.
Many rose gardening enthusiasts follow an old rule of thumb when cutting these beautiful blossoms for indoor enjoyment. Cut roses just above a leaf with 5 leaflets (leaves closer to the flower will have fewer leaflets), preferably one that is facing away from the interior of the plant. For long-lasting cut roses, pick flowers in the early morning or late afternoon, re-cut the stems under water, then plunge them into water up to the bases of the blooms. Leave all foliage on the stems since it also absorbs water.
You may remember your grandfather planting potatoes in the garden using cut-up sections of grocerystore spuds. While potatoes from the store are good to eat, they may carry ailments harmful to future crops. In order to ensure a healthy crop, start with potatoes that are certified disease-free, available from many nurseries and garden centers.
With plenty of rainfall in most areas of the state, most homeowners are keeping their lawn mowers busy. And with lawn mowing comes the problem of disposing of grass clippings. Short clippings can stay on the lawn since they serve as a natural mulch. If you rake up your grass clippings or use a grass catcher, do not let them accumulate in a pile where they are likely to become a breeding place to insects. The most efficient ways to use grass clippings are to put them in a compost pile or to use them in very thin layers as a mulch for flower beds. Common bermuda grass clippings are best disposed of in the garbage can.
Fall Genealogy Workshop Planned

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Grist Mill Still Grinding
(Continued from page 1)
Buckner said. "When I was in college, there would be as many as 50 trucks backed up to have their corn ground," he said.
Of course, Buckner isn't a miller to become rich. He charges a toll of a quarter pound of corn or 6 cents per pound to grind. That's the same rate his grandfather charged. "Of course, he sold meal for 10 cents a peck. Now it's $3," he said.

An adult Canadian goose treads the waters of the 25-acre pond that powers Fielder's Mill. The pond was built with hand labor in 1840.
to be with his sons, Joshua Edlow and John, and run the mill.
Many of the Buckner's customers came from a long-running ad in the Market Bulletin, which was part of the recently discountinued Farm Services category. "I kept a list of people who ordered from the Market Bulletin. It's over 600, and they come from every state in the union. I even had a fella order some grits from Hawaii. The grits cost $2.50 and the postage cost $5."
For his meal and grits that he sells, Buckner grows a special corn that he gets from Tifton that produces less bran, making for a cleaner and better grind. He bags the grits and meal under the Fielder's Mill label.
The mill runs every day, but business is not what it used to be,

Covered with years of rust from exposure to the elements, this wheel opens the sluice that powers the water turbine.

** consumer line...
Q: How many quarts of canned tomatoes can I expect from a bushel of whole ones?
A: A bushel of tomatoes will yield 15-20 quarts when canned. This amount will vary if you make sauce, paste or juice.
****
Q: I would like to know how to season a cast iron skillet and a Dutch oven.
A: New cast iron cookware has a factory-applied coating, which should be removed by washing thoroughly with soap and water. After washing, it is ready to be seasoned. For best results, it should be coated both inside and out with animal fat or vegetable shortening (not oil). Some sources recommend applying more coats than others, but the following method calls for 3 coats. Rub gen erously over the entire pan, inside and out, then place it in an oven heated to 425 degrees for 15 min utes.
Recoat the inside and return pan to the oven for 15 minutes more. Apply a final coat inside and bake for two more hours, then turn the oven off and leave the pan inside to cool gradually. (Warning: do not put the lid on a cast iron Dutch oven while seasoning it be cause the lid will become sealed and you will need a crowbar to pry it off.) If the coating comes off from use, it may be seasoned as needed. If pans begin to rust, the rust may be scraped off with steel wool and the pan re-coated.

Pick Your Own

When using the pick-your-own list, on pages 6-7, remember that the maturity of fruits and vegetables is directly influenced by the weather. The dates provided on the list are approximate. For accurate, up-to-date information, be sure to contact the individual operation for produce availability. It is best to call ahead before driving to a pick-your-own operation for detailed location directions, hours of operation and other information you may need. Growers should keep in mind that just because you were included on this list does not mean you will automatically be included next time. Pick-your-own operators must submit the required information for each listing published in the Bulletin. Please see the notice below for details.

Pick-Your-Own Deadline
Georgia growers who would like to be included in the Market Bulletin's Pick-Your-Own listing, scheduled for publication Aug. 9, should clip this notice, provide all of the information shown below and mail it in before the July 26 deadline.
Pick-Your-Own submissions must be neatly hand printed or typed in the box below, or neatly typewritten on unlined paper. Illegible notices and/or notices which do not include all of the information provided below, will not be included in the listing.
